August 11, 201610 yr I still can't believe they banned Russia paralympic team and not the regular team. The equivalent of Holy Cross getting put on probation because the KHSAA is upset with Trinity/St. X, or UK football getting punished as a way to clean up SEC football. Or even better, the NCAA absolving UNC hoops.
August 11, 201610 yr We do have to consider the possibility the Chinese will force their people to compete in less-than-safe conditions, which could cost us. What?
August 11, 201610 yr Not sure if this has been mentioned.... USA Basketball staying on luxury cruise ship for Olympics, separate from athletes village - Story | KTVU USA Basketball passes up athletes village, staying on luxury cruise ship for Olympics The U.S. men’s and women’s Olympic basketball teams are experiencing Rio a little differently than the other top athletes there for the Games. The basketball players are not living among the other athletes at the Olympics athletes' village but have rather taken over a luxury cruise ship docked on the city’s eastern waterfront. The Silver Cloud yacht can accommodate as many as 400 people in its 196 cabins. It is not unusual for USA Basketball to opt for a location separate from other Olympic athletes. Since 1992 the organization that oversees the national men’s and women’s teams has put up its athletes outside Olympics athlete villages. For the 2004 Games in Athens, the basketball team also stayed on a cruise liner. They were housed in hotels in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. One concerns is the high profile nature of the basketball players and whether they will be able to focus without too many distractions from fans if they're housed in a more communal setting. USA Basketball says given that its players are probably the most recognizable athletes in the world, security needs to be a top priority. Security measures around the teams digs include a fence made of bulletproof material. The US athletes are also being guarded by some 250 Federal Police officers, according to Fox Sports. Some critics question what they call the somewhat elitist accommodations for the US basketball players, noting that other world renowned athletes are being housed in the village. They include Usain Bolt, known as the worlds fastest man and recently traded Golden State Warrior, now Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut, who is suiting up with Team Australia for the Games. The USA men's basketball team is literally worth Billions of dollars. They definitely should be in a separate area for security purposes.
August 11, 201610 yr nbcolympics.com just added a gold so I updated my post we have 32 now instead of 31
August 11, 201610 yr Efimova swims another final tonight in the 200m breast. No Americans in it. I'd like to see her win it.
August 11, 201610 yr So one of the best in the world comes to America and has no coaching/guidance on what to put in her body? You make it sound like she was a struggling athlete just trying to make it on her own. If that's the case then fine but I have a hard time believing she didn't have coaches/handlers here helping her. Also no way do I believe someone in her position just walked in GNC and thought this stuff must all be ok. It's not like she came from some 3rd world country where she grew up in the jungle. I know countless and countless athletes -- many very competitive -- that are taking supplements without going through the ingredients list. Doesn't seem unlikely at all. People look for an edge, for help, etc. Also, I think it's well-documented that the Russian Federation hasn't gone a great job educating their athletes. I think people are trying to make her fit a narrative because it's makes for a fun story a la Rocky IV.
August 11, 201610 yr So, the water polo pool is green now too. Awesome I think they are all peeing in the pools. Any pool owner knows what happened - algae bloom. When there is not enough chlorine algae will grow literally overnight. And you can not fix it overnight. They are saying the issue is PH - but only if the PH is so off that the chlorine action is disabled. The real issue algae and the algae is from lack of chlorine. And it appears they did not stock enough chemicals - they say they ran out! Click here. FINA can confirm that the reason for the unusual water color observed during the Rio diving competitions is that the water tanks ran out of some of the chemicals used in the water treatment process. Here is what has happened in general pool layman's terms. If Your Pool Is Green and Cloudy Even After Shocking | Dengarden [h=2]4. Will the Pool Turn Green if I Don't Add Chlorine?[/h]Believe it or not, I have seen this keyword search pop up more than once. There is a short answer: YES, IT WILL turn green if you don't add chlorine. Pool water must have a sanitizer or something that will kill bacteria and algae. Algaecide alone without chlorine will not prevent the pool from turning green. Notice the green - just like in Rio. Its a simple algae bloom.

Its a simple algae bloom. It appears that is what this is. A few other things could have caused it and the fact this was the Olympics I just couldn't believe it was algae, for the simple fact that it is so easy to avoid. I don't believe PH being off will turn the water green. PH really doesn't affect chlorine but chlorine levels definitely affect PH. Too much chlorine will lower the PH and too little or no chlorine will raise the PH. I saw a story they were trying to say the PH was too high and that caused it. PH being off can cause the water to be cloudy looking. This seems pretty simple, they just aren't shocking the pools. They aren't monitoring the chlorine levels. Again, this takes all of 1 min to test. If you are using strips it takes less than 10 seconds.

I personally think the whole thing is overblown and if what the Russian failed tests for is true, then it's no big deal in my mind anyway. I think if the girl wasn't from Russia it's probably not a big deal and I don't think Lilly does what she did. But the fact the girl has failed two tests and is from a country with proven systematic doping of their athletes, here we are. That said, any athlete at this level that is taking anything they bought over the counter at somewhere like GNC without some kind of guidance from someone that knows what they are talking about is an idiot. Plain and simple.

August 11, 201610 yr A big part of me hopes Phelps feels the competitive bug and gives it another go in 4 years. He's still on top of the game. I hate to see athletes go out when they are still the best.
August 11, 201610 yr Author A big part of me hopes Phelps feels the competitive bug and gives it another go in 4 years. He's still on top of the game. I hate to see athletes go out when they are still the best. I'd love to see him come back as well. However a lot can change from 31 to 35. He's already done it at this level for half his life. I think this is the last we'll see of him. What an amazing talent.
