Every play involves multiple judgment calls. Since they are exactly that calls are going to be missed or called when they should not have been in the thoughts of many. That is not this situation. This is not knowing the rule and then NO ONE on the crew knowing the rule. And it was a dead ball after the call was made so there was time to make a correction had anyone on the crew known the rule. This was not a split-second judgment call.

Are you arguing the rule that no one knew or that Mayfield got 7 points? Because not knowing the rule and refing a state title game is inexcusable and not getting other calls right is inexcusable also. As I said , a holding call or pass interference or just about anything that a ref does that's wrong and influences a game is wrong.

This rule isn't specific to KY/KHSAA. It is a NFHS rule that is the same throughout the country. Even the two states that use college rules, Texas and Massachusets, follow this rule.

 

The other rule concerning kicks that is different, is it doesn't matter where the player is when he downs the ball....if the player is in the end zone, but the ball is not, it is not a touchback.

Easy to get caught up in the moment and miss that call initially. You've got to get together and get it correct though.

Just watched a replay of this play and even the announcers have no clue and are calling it a touchdown and not questioning it. I would say the vast vast majority would not have questioned it and if a Mayfield player had muffed a punt and it went in the endzone and was recovered by the other team, I would have called it a td. I know better now... for high school ball anyway.

Where was this crew from??

Sure missed calls or bad calls are wrong.......but they are subjective.......what you see as a hold I might not see as a hold......and neither of us has the same view the official had on the field so we can understand how a call can be "wrong" when it is made in real time. Heck we can see how many calls are wrong with replay in the NCAA and NFL games and those officials should be better than any high school officials.

 

But not knowing and enacting a basic rule by anyone in the entire crew that resulted in a 7 point score is a major mistake that should not happen in a game of this magnitude. Maybe the fault partially lies in a crew being assigned that was not one of the best available. But it is a disservice to both teams.

In looking at your post, you referenced an incident in KY as the reason the rule was implemented in the 90's. It sounded like you were inferring this was a KY only rule, especially when you mentioned KHSAA involvement.

Sorry that I didn't make it more clear. The reason the rule was implemented (I believe) was from the incident that happened in Ky and thus the rule was adopted by the NFHS as a safety factor...

I am told that apparently at least 2 of the guys on the crew were from Lexington. The same association that incorrectly took a TD off the board in last years semi final game due to also having a lack of the rule book knowledge and how a penalty should be enforced. 1 of them was the white hat.

Once you've been here for awhile you get used to it.

Maybe the rest were at Mass, watching the Bengals, Christmas shopping? In their defense a few may have intended to go under the old dates but in reality when it is the 4th in a row and what 8th or 9th time since 2005 you are not going to get the casual fan to drive over 4 hours.

 

Did Ncc win any during that time frame? It seems like they've lost most of the time when they've been in the finals and they were the underdog again today. The fans should've been there.

 

I don't know if a correct call would have made a difference or not in this game. Ncc defense played a fine game. The offense was stuffed, but Ncc was capable of breaking a long play like what happened against Danville. It still felt like Mayfield had control the entire time after the 1st qtr though.

 

Ncc gets a free pass to the semis every season being in a weak region, but the team still had a solid season. They were much better at the end of the year because of playing a strong early season schedule.

That association was to be penalized by not having officials in tn e finals this year. Guess big boy went back on his words?
