Sorry that I didn't make it more clear. The reason the rule was implemented (I believe) was from the incident that happened in Ky and thus the rule was adopted by the NFHS as a safety factor...

 

I've looked around and can't find exactly when this rule was implemented. For some reason, I feel like this was a rule even when I played from (I graduated in 1988). Not sure though...my memory is often faulty.

You are correct. Happened one rainy night in Hancock Co. when Owensboro Catholic played Hancock Co. THe ref said their was no such thing as a muff punt. Ball goes into the endzone and Catholic falls on it and it's ruled a safety.

After seeing a close up, I'm still not sure what the kid was doing there. That is a ball you've got to get away from. Never even touched his hands, the ball looked like a dog that jumped up and bit him. Square in the facemask and right into the end zone.

How could anyone argue this? It is very telling that most fans don't understand the rules. I watched my son muff a kickoff and then down it in he endzone in an NCAA game. He was praised by his coaches for knowing the rules.

Had the ball been possessed by the receiving team then knocked loose into the end zone and recovered, I believe, it was a TD.

 

A muffed punt cannot be advanced and if it crosses the goal line it is a touchback. If it is recovered in the field of play (fallen on or picked up) it is dead at that point.

 

I learned this rule the hard way playing for Bowling Green way back in 1968. We muffed a punt at Tilghman about the 40 yd line. Tilghman picks it up and runs it in for a TD. It was a rule then and remains so today.

 

But, guess what, the record book shows Tilghman won.

For the record, I only thought this rule applied to kickoffs. I now know I was wrong.

 

I also do not get paid to officiate State Championship game though as well.

 

Horrible blown call.... didn't decide the winner per se...but no denying it completely changed the trajectory of the game.
