My question is whether the punting team loses the opportunity to close out the play (1) after the ball strikes member of receiving team and (2) after it then goes into end zone. Rules say that the punting team may recover the ball after it hits a member of the receiving team. Correct?

 

Punting team can recover a live ball.

 

Ball is dead when it enters the EZ on a kick.

Yes and then it says that if the ball crosses the goalline it becomes a dead ball and a touchback.

Basically in high school football any ball touched not possessed in the field of play in the kicking game where the ball crosses into the end zone the ball is dead and a touchback is provided to the receiving team. Just not that hard to comprehend. Doesn't matter if it makes sense, you don't like it or you think it is stupid. It is the rule.

Sad truth is we had every opportunity to win and didn't. TD called back, missed field goal, offense sluggish. Mayfield is always a good team, but we could have and should have beaten them. Our defense was top notch. Many many 3 and outs. Sad about the mistake, at this level all these boys deserve officials who know what they are doing and know the rules. Very unfair, for everyone asking what happened, here it is, Mayfields punted the ball it bounced hit the ground, bounced up hit our players helmet and went into the endzone. Then a Mayfield player jumped on it. Ruled a TD.

It does taint the win, but it is not Mayfield's fault. I am sure the NCC seniors wonder what could have been. It is a shame all around.

It's unfortunate. Just a little while after the game and there's well more than double the views in this thread than the game thread. Neither team deserves that after the game they played.

I have yet to see anyone say Mayfield wouldn't have won the game.

The rule for ANY kicks crossing the goal line was put in place due to safety factors. If memory serves me correctly, back in the 90's a player was injured on a kick off (in NKY) during the playoffs. The visiting team kicked off after a score and the young man watched the ball go over his head. One of the kickoff coverage players hits the young man and caused a head injury. The discussion was about the play being over. Years ago coaches taught to play till the whistle. There was no whistle so play continued and incident happened. It was a major ordeal with the schools, refs, & the KHSAA. I won't state what the rule was called or any team names but you can look it up if anyone so desires. It's unfortunate that the refs got it wrong today but that question "what if" will forever linger...

What Mayfield should have done is told the ref's , you guys have got this wrong, 1st and ten NCC. Then when Mayfield scored in the 4th qter and they called a the phantom block in the back , hey ref's you got that call wrong too. Touchdown Mayfield.
