Ok it's rule. A tough break for NCC. I don't think it's a good rule and high school rules need to get more inline with college rules to end confusion. Another dumb high school rule is that there is no out of the tackle box throw aways like college and pros. It's intentional grounding in HS.

 

It allegedly is a safety rule.......I guess once a ball is in the endzone versus the 5 yard line there is %% more chance of injury to the blockers, defenders, and runner?

Ya I knoe that... but if I'm running to the ball and land on it and act like I can't control it , it's not illegal batting.... I knoe that rule. There is a diff if u just bobble it around.. vs smacking it or kicking it!

Surely there's some mention in rule book of punted ball becoming live after it hits player on receiving team. I'm just curious as to what the language specifically says.

Think of it this way.....Kickoff returner is at the 5 and the kickoff bounces at the 10 and takes a high hop. Returner reaches up over his head and it hits off his hand and goes into the endzone. The returner cannot go get the ball and return it out of the endzone....it is a dead ball. Likewise kickoff returner is at the 10 and tries to go back and catch a kick over his head at the 1 but it hits off his hands and goes into the endzone. The returner cannot go get the ball and return it out of the endzone.....it is a dead ball. The returner is at the near hash mark at the 10 and the kick is to the far hash mark. He runs over and the ball takes a crazy hop and hits his shoulder and rolls into the endzone. The returner cannot go get the ball and return it out of the endzone ......it is a dead ball.

That's risky.

Just spoke to a ref friend and he is upset. Sick and tired of awful making other officials look bad. Said he was listening and started screamimg at the call in shock

Ball is already live.

 

It's dead when it crosses the goal line IF it has not been secured.

Mayfield fans, we know how it is. Last year same kind of thing happened when we played Murray last year and they called back the 70-yard touchdown for sideline interference. It sucks for NCC but that's how the game was dealt. Congrats to Mayfield on their state championship

One of problems here is that most posters that don't know the muff and end zone rules for high school are using logic to support their interpretation of what they think the rules should say. Why would logic apply to a game that has so many different rules for high school vs. college vs pro?
