This is ridiculous! The lack of rules knowledge amongst officials is appalling. How does this happen in a state playoff game, much less a state final? the assignors for these games are also accountable.

I jus watched the highlights on our local news and this is EXACTLY what happened as I played it in slow motion. The punt landed and bounced up and hit the NCC player in the helmet. When the ball come off of his helmet, it hit a Mayfield players helmet which was at the 6 yd line and then the ball bounced off of his helmet and it went rolling into the endzone and Mayfield recovered.

 

It was called and now it's over so there is nothing that can be done.

Or a phantom facemask after the runner was already downed (on a pass that hit the ground, but called complete)

 

Wondered about that play, thought that maybe the sun/shadows were playing tricks on my eyes. The camera angle was to the receiver's (Smith) back so I just figured I was mistaken by thinking it hit the ground.

This reminds me of the Seinfeld magic bullet parody "Magic Loogie Theory". Keith Hernandez is accused of spitting on Kramer and Newman (but it was Roger McDowell).

Responsibility for forcing the ball from the field of play across a goal line is attributed to the player who carries, snaps, passes, fumbles or kicks the ball, unless a new force is applied to a grounded backward pass, kick or fumble.

 

a. The muffing or batting of a pass, kick or fumble in flight is not considered a new force; and

 

b. The accidental touching of a loose ball by a player who was blocked into the ball is ignored and does not constitute a new force.

 

What happens if a batted pass crosses the goal line and is intercepted (on either goal line)? Not disputing any of this, just thinking of odd scenarios that are a real possibility.

Now this could be a whole thread of its own. I don't know these officials so this is not to be a knock on them. This is more general statement on the KHSAA.

 

Is the KHSAA sending their best officials to work these state tournament games? This could go for any sport. The best generally are not sent to work the state tournament from each region being that if the same guys went every year why would guys want to officiate? Are the schools/kids truly getting the best the state has to offer? I would personally like to sees the same guy each year if I know he is going to work a good game versus someone worrying their first state game ever and then possible not being ready for it.

The players all went after the ball driven purely by their instincts on how to play the game.

The stripes screwed up but the players did what championship competitors do. They competed and everyone went for the ball with all they had.

 

There is no replay, there are no challenges, the officials are not perfect and they are not well compensated professionals. It's a complicated game with varying rules at all levels.

We see weekly the highest paid best trained football officials in the game make mistakes even with the benefit of the best replay equipment available from every angle.

This is completely different than going to replay.

 

This is the equivalent of the NFL saying that a pass is complete as long as the receiver gets one foot down.

Officiating crew throughou the game looked more like one you would find at a Caverna - Fulton City matchup.

That game was not determined by THE CALL.

 

The outcome was determined when NCC rolled into BG with OL and DL that outweighed Mayfield by 30-40 lbs average and they did not simply line up and pound the LOS. Mayfield had four offensive snaps in the first quarter. One was a punt. Because NCC controlled the LOS with their running game. Then they became impatient, not satisfied with 3-6 yd gains and gave up that huge advantage. That is what cost NCC a State Championship.
