Bingo! Regardless of the incorrect application of the rules on the muffed punt, and some questionable calls, you are not going to win many state championship games scoring only 7 points. Several people want to argue that the muffed punt call changed the momentum of the game, i agree, but momentum was changed all throughout the game for various reasons. If this, and If that, well, IF did'nt happen. Mayfield put themselves into the position to win, the officials did not make a call that cost NCC the game.

 

Come on now rookie. As a Mayfield fan, you surely know that Danville won the state title in 1989 by beating the Cardinals 7-3.

 

For the record, congrats to all the Mayfield fans on here on their latest title. Again showing themselves to be one of the best programs in KY, year in and year out. Don't let this debate tarnish what you earned. Most of us are citing the fact that the refs were wrong but aren't building a case that it would have changed the winner of the game. No it did not the kid picked it up at the 6. But I was curious if he could advance it. Because it happened 3 years ago in a Conner game. Conner punts, Kid muffs it, Conner picked it up, ref blew it dead and told the coach they can't advance it.

I was right above that play at that end of the field. There was nothing blocking my view at all. If I was in the middle of the stands then I would agree, no way I could see it. But that was not the case here.

Ball did not bounce off the turf... It was caught clean.

The face mask was actually worse than what you are calling for. #3 was down, on the ground a step before #9 put his hands on him. Didn't have to touch him. Even if he wanted to touch #3 down, it didn't call for grabbing the face mask as he ran by.

Maybe the rest were at Mass, watching the Bengals, Christmas shopping? In their defense a few may have intended to go under the old dates but in reality when it is the 4th in a row and what 8th or 9th time since 2005 you are not going to get the casual fan to drive over 4 hours.

The call was wrong and that is the bottom line. With that being said, it still didn't change the outcome of the game. Mayfield was playing great defense and NCC was playing with an OC that is down right terrible. He cost them the game not the referees. You can't win when your're playing a tough team like Mayfield and you have a guy calling plays that couldn't win a pee wee football game if his life depended on it. Mayfield shouldn't have to hear about this call and have it take away from a solid championship.

That is a shame. A bad call like that changes the whole momentum of the game. A team shouldn't make it to the finals to be cheated by officials who don't know the rules.

 

How do 5 officials get to work a state championship game and NONE of them know this rule? There will always be questions on judgement calls, but that usually involves ONE official and it is just that:his judgement. This is a situation where any one of the 5 could have known the rule and had a conference with the other officials and got it right. Absolutely NO excuse for not knowing this rule. Whether it had a baring on the game is incidental, it is ridiculous that it happened. NCC fans think the game may have ended differently. Mayfield fans are forced into defending their stance they would have won anyway. BOTH teams are cheated because 5 officials were incompetent. It not about the result of the game at all, it is how in the hell the state can assign these officials to a game like this.
