Yes it is. If a punt touches anyone on the return team in any way it's a muffed kick and and a live ball.

I'm a NKY guy that watches more than his fair of football each year. I would love to say that the officials cost NKY a state title but that's not true. Mayfield played a solid game and made adjustments and NewCath didn't. The punt return call was blown. We all agree on that' date=' even the Mayfield folks will agree I think after seeing the debate on BGP. But to take anything away from their championship is a joke. They made adjustments and NewCath didn't. They knew that they couldn't run the ball on NewCath so they threw Quick passes. They spied Smith and let the others beat them. They say back and laughed at NewCath's play calling. They took what was given to them and ran with it. The punt call was unfortunate for NewCath but it wasn't Mayfield's fault it happen. I love NKY football but to sit back and watch this thread is sickening. NewCath had the chance to take ahold of this game and thier OC ran the Wildacat on 3 and 8. He chose to run the Jet sweep on 4 and 1 from midfield. He chose to run pass plays with routes that take too long to run. He continued to run Smith when Mayfield was spying him all game long. Enough. Mayfield made adjustments and NewCath didn't. Let them enjoy the victory and hope like hell, your head coach takes the play calling away from your OC. Gotta say this was an irresponsible thread to even start. Guru is a hater for sure. This was called a touchdown by the officials who were assigned to the game.

 

The hit on Kennemore was clearly targeting and changed the trajectory of the game...nobody stared a thread. The kid for NCC that picked up the yellow flag and threw it back over the head of the ref was a missed call and would have changed the trajectory of the game...no thread stared. The 'excessive celebration" call in the McCracken game cost Mayfield the game and a perfect season and was a ridiculous call....no thread started....I could go on and on.

 

This was the call on the field. live with it. The better team won and has won all year. I know that everyone (not a fan) is tired of Mayfield being in BG. This kids didn't make the call, the refs made the call. Delete this thread an move on. Its embarrassing.

Sure you can dispute them, but in these instances the refs saw what they saw (or didn't see). This particle instance is a clear incorrect interpretation of a rule. That should NEVER happen in any game, let alone a state title game. Forget whether the play influenced the game or not...that's all just conjecture and hypothetical. A misapplicatiin of or incorrect interpretation of a rule should simply never occur. I'd have the same opinion, and people should be just as upset if this occurred in a game between two winless team in week 10 of the season.

Why do you think this board is only for unbiased and legitimate discussion ? This board has a core design to invite controversy and banter....the thread title just points out that a call was blown in a State Championship Game, much like the softball thread over a year ago.

I never said you said the title was tainted. I don't even care who won or didn't. I don't think I've said anything to get any Mayfield fan worked up. This has nothing to do with Mayfield, or their worthiness as a state champ (except that they played in the game). My comment is strictly related to the blown rules interpretation. Period.

One thing that hasn't been discussed is whether the official thought that Mayfield gained control of the ball before the end zone. We all know he didn't but maybe the official did.
