What kick can you not run out of the end zone

One thing that hasn't been discussed is whether the official thought that Mayfield gained control of the ball before the end zone. We all know he didn't but maybe the official did.

 

Even if they did it still shouldn't have been a TD. You can't advance a muffed kick.

No kick can be run out of the end zone. Once the ball enters the end zone without being possessed (not just touched), the ball is dead.

I haven't read thru the whole thread, so it might have already been mentioned, but who were the officials for this game?

Like I said before, I'm pretty sure this has been rule since before the mid 90's. I'm certain this was a rule when I played in the mid to late 80's as we had a kicker who went on to kick at Auburn who never gave up returns because he kicked every kickoff into the end zone.

 

Which makes it such a huge mistake. This isn't a new rule...its been around forever...no excuse for blowing the call.

Let's put our loyalty to our teams in check for a minute. I believe that the mistake by the ref's on the muff punt change the game. Let's keep in mind I said change the game. Would MF have won the game regardless maybe/maybe not. MF is a very good football team as is NCC both teams played their hearts out. A call like that being down 14-0 compared to 7-0 is different, the play calling is different form both sides. NCC on there heals, MF knowing NCC had to play catch and can pin there ears back going after the QB knowing NCC had to score quick being down 2 TDs. As for the field goal well NCC had to sell out to make something happened to get the ball back. Also the TD that was called back whether is was a block in the back or not its a judgment call just like the fumble before the half the one ref said he was down the other said it was a fumble resulting I MF scoring before the half on a terrific drive. I am not saying MF still wouldn't have won the game but you have to admit it changed the game. If the right call was made who knows what could have happened, NCC held them to a 3 and out and would have had the ball on the 20. It was a game changer, again not saying the same result wouldn't have happened but we will never know, the ref's out right blew the it on a rule they should have known because it was put in to keep players safe so how do you not know that rule.

You can't say that for sure, so guess we will never know now will we.

Thing is, the trophy is in the MHS trophy case and it ain't going nowhere.. Doesn't matter what may have happened.. It's all speculation.. I hate it for NCC and also hate it for Mayfield.. Despite that, it's over, get over it, punish the officials or whatever.. But, it's not either teams fault and when all's said and done, not going to change the outcome..
