In the state of Texas this is a Class B misdemeanor, unless they view striking him with a helmet a deadly weapon, which does clearly occur by the 2nd player directly in the officials back while he's lying on the ground (which I can certainly see the court taking it that far if they wanna make a major statement about this type of behavior), in that case it will be a felony charge. If they haven't been arrested...it's coming. Texas takes football very seriously and I can see the court system imposing MAJOR penalties against these young men to prove a point that this type of behavior is unacceptable and carries a stiff penalty, not limited to a major fine for mom and dad, but some weekend jail time is certainly and likely possible.

But you also don't know if racial slurs were really used. The kids could be on the defensive and saying he used racial slurs to protect themselves. No one really knows anything other than what the video shows and what the video shows is disturbing no matter what led up to it. This behavior should not and cannot be condoned.

No argument there. That's why I think it should be weighed and judged after the facts are out.

Thinking these two may be done with playing high school football......

 

A Texas school district is investigating an incident where two players hit an official during a high school football game Friday night.

 

One player appears to run into the back of a referee and another dove into the back of the official after he was down during a game between San Antonio John Jay High School and Marble Falls HS at Marble Falls, about 90 miles north of San Antonio. The Northside Independent School District in San Antonio is investigating, the San Antonio Express News reported. District athletic director Stan Laing, who confirmed the probe, called the incident "very disturbing."

 

Marble Falls beat John Jay 15-9, and was attempting to run out the clock with approximately a minute left when the referee was hit.

 

Earlier, two John Jay players had been ejected on separate plays, the Express-News reported.

 

Marble Falls coach Matt Green said John Jay coach Gary Gutierrez apologized after the game.

 

"I've coached 14 years and I've never seen anything like it," Green said.

 

The referee was "very upset" and "wanting to press charges," Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott told The Associated Press. Elliott added, "the first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again."

Kids out for rest of career regardless of what year they may be. I have no problems with them being prosecuted either even though I don't think they would get much if any punishment beyond probation.

I did the same thing.

If I got mad every time I heard a racial slur on the field, I would have been one angry dude.

 

If an official really was using racial slurs, there are different ways to go about it.

 

I agree,, and I am in no way condoning the behavior of the players. I will say that in the heat of the moment, we all have made bad decisions once provoked. These two young men are absolutely wrong in their behavior. Yet, we cannot totally excuse the action of the ADULT on the field. At what point is it okay for an official who is charged with keeping the order of the game,, to allegedly call a player any racially based term.

 

I remember a few years ago when the player from I think the Cleveland Browns shoved a ref to the ground when a flag was thrown and it hit him in the eye. The initial response was the player should be expelled from game, until he appeared on TV with his eye completely closed as a result of the flag.

 

I say let the investigation take place and find out what totally happened here. While the video does paint an obvious picture as to what took place, would it have happened if the ADULT in the incident not added fuel to the fire. As a former coach, my initial response would be to severely discipline the boys after witnessing what I saw on the field. Taking a step back a looking at it from all sides, I am more apt to wait and hear what was said and then dish out a punishment based on the facts.

I don't feel one bit sorry for them. Apathy at their age is at an all time high and they need to be held accountable to the highest degree in my opinion. A helmet directly in his back could have been REALLY bad. I have no doubt Texas will take this very seriously. They are just a little different down there! LOL

The whole racial slurs thing reminds me of the episode of Friday Night Lights I just watched. FWIW, the kid in the TV show lied about racial slurs being used when he assaulted a classmate.

So they apparently ejected the wrong dude after the hit on the ref, and one of those kids involved took a cheap shot at an opponent on the very next play. That team had 4 dudes ejected in all during the contest. Good article below.
