New football playoff format would pit Louisville schools...

Featured Replies

Please refer to post #504 ...

Again...pretty much everything you say in #504 is about the geographical problems TBF's plan has with the at-large teams (which I pretty much addressed in my last post). This is probably because he rushed to put it together without taking the time to sit down and plan it out better...maybe he has more important things to do, but I doubt it...:D

Your only point about Louisville being the midpoint of 4A is the only thing you pointed to regarding the Louisville school's. Still nothing there to really respond to unless you want me to sit down and spend the next day or so figuring out a new alignment proposal...

I take extreme exception to the bolded statement. No one has said Louisville was untouchable, nor any of the rest of what you say. There has been a noted attack by many "state at large" posters on Louisville schools. This isn't new, or even relevant only to this year's football playoff format. There has always been a concerted effort to neutralize Louisville's domination in 4A football. What's arrogant about posting the obvious? If you follow 4A football, you realize that most of the dominant teams are from Louisville. Probably because we have the largest population and the largest number of 4A schools in one city/county.

The "center of the state" argument is not a geographical argument when it comes to dividing the state into regions/districts. The split has to occur where the East and West will be split into relatively equal numbers of 4A playing schools. The fact that this centricity occurs in Louisville is because of the fact that Louisville has more 4A schools.

The playoffs have been formatted many ways over the years, but if I remember correctly, just about anyway it has been formatted, the majority of the time a Jefferson County team went to the championship game, and the majority of the time, they've won it. I'm not sure where the arrogance you percieve is in that statement, but it is rooted in fact and not bravado.

Lighten up Rocky...I wasn't talking about you there but if you truly think there is not the least bit of arrogance on the part of the Louisville folks as perceived by the rest of the state, I'm here to tell you otherwise. Some (not ALL) Louisville posters act as though the sun rises and sets based on what happens with their respective teams. This attitude comes out in the perception that nearly every poster outside Louisville doesn't know what their talking about or their suggestions or plans are rejected as being without merit, apparently because it's not what's best for Louisville. This is fact as far as I'm concerned.

Personally, I think my suggestion for a new playoff format would work well in that there would always be a chance for an all Louisville final and in other classes, the Racelands of the world wouldn't always have to see Beechwood in the playoffs. To recap, continue with the first two rounds being intradivision. Then have a televised blind draw of ALL districts with third and fourth round games being played at suitable neutral sites.

Of course, I'm not from Louisville so this will summarily be rejected as idiotic...;)

Frankly, I don't care how they split it all up, and who plays who, as long as it's not a split based upon public and private. I don't think Trinity and X (although I don't speak for them) will mind. I've always assumed their philosophy was to play to win, regardless of whom they were playing.

As to arrogance by Louisville posters....Just like in any subgroup, there will be arrogance by some, but you categorized Louisvillians as a group, and I fall into that group. So, in essence, you were practicing reverse-bias when calling

the folks in Louisville
arrogant. Then, you go and cap it off with this gem...

I could care less if Louisville broke off from Kentucky and floated over to Indiana

That's a statement a whole lot bigger than football, and unfortunately, held by a lot more people than read BGP. It's old. There you go, honey! :D Your post wasn't idiotic, but it certainly wasn't objective. :p

Sheesh, I'm going back to Politics and Religion where the atmosphere is nicer.

How exactly does that translate into "And, IMO, most of them center on Louisville being the center of the Kentucky high school football universe..."? Please enlighten me ...

Then again, it seems rather obvious that much of the reason for the TBF plan's geographic problems is his underlying desire to place all of the Louisville schools on one side of the bracket.

That seems to be the common belief and it's often expressed here, but in all honesty, I don't remember the change in 4A being because a Louisville team always reached the championship game. I believe it had more to do with the travel situation ... the outstate schools were traveling all over the place while the Louisville schools never left Jefferson County.

That, in my opinion, is a much more legitimate concern than whether Louisville was guaranteed a spot in the title game.

For example, in 1980 Paducah Tilghman won playoff games at Shelby County and Henry Clay to get to the finals. Trinity, which hammered Tilghman in the state final, never had to leave Jefferson County.

The change mandated that the Louisville schools would have to travel, even if it was sparingly, and kept teams from opposite ends of the state meeting in the semifinals.

Thanks Westerner:thumb:

Ive gotten so tired of hearing the line that it was previously changed to keep Louisville out of the final. Marsha, Marsha, Marsha :D :D :D

That has never made sense b/c louisville has always been so strong in the bigger classes & bound to make the finals consistently - due in part to the vast number of the big schools being IN Lou.

Your point is backed up by the fact that Ashland had to go to Paducah (we chartered a plane as a matter of fact) for the old State-at-large championship game, then we lost to St X at the Fairgrounds after I assume they did indeed stay in Jeff Co. the whole month.

So lets hear from the Louisvillites on westsiders point :thumb:

Louisville isnt as big as miami obviuosly but Louisville and Lexington schools only in the biggest of classes is wht Ive said all along should be done.

In that case the Finals, would still be all Louisville.

I believe that Louisville has EARNED the right to be arrogant in reference to 4A football.

Louisville has earned the right to respect, relative to 4A football. IMO, arrogance is inexcusable.

^ arrogance is seen in the eyes of the beholder....many who don't know me, probably don't like me thinking that I am supremely arrogant. Others that have spent the time AND ENERGY :), know that I am very confident and earn the respect that people give me.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Don’t look for a Trinity-St. Xavier matchup in the state 4-A football finals — for the state’s largest schools — this fall.

Don’t look for all-Louisville final at all.

Dear Guru, you are being too tough on the KHSAA. To suggest that the draw might be rigged against Louisville schools is ridculous. :)..

Actually it is a pretty good plan, All of the schools will get bigger revenue in the first two games because of the distance factor. Boone County v. Dixie Heights will bring in more money than Boone County v. Ballard or Fern Creek.

I also like it because every district will have a team playing a third round game.

It does prevent some Louisville schools from having a chance to play a second or third round game. Historically that would be Manual, PRP and Ballard

This year could be a bonanza for Trinity and St. X if they play in the third round. Their ADs might contact Papa Johns now just in case. In fact, the third round game between any two Louisville teams might be at Papa Johns.

The K in KHSAA stands for Kentucky. I think KHSAA may most of Kentucky happier.

By the way, what is the record for the longest thread in the "Football" forum?

This ruling will only help Ky high school football, but don't expect it to come fast. It'll make things more balanced and turn out better football prospects across the state. The solution in 4A to the big 3 winning most of the time is to get the idea that they have some sort of an advantage out of the minds of the kids who play against them(coaches, parents, school,etc.). You can only play 11, but that doesn't mean you go easy on second and third teamers in practice. Prepare like they do: study film, lift weights, sprint daily, come together as a team, and most importantly, have loyalty to the program. Boyle Co., Highlands, and others can do it and they don't have the best selection of atheletes. Others should follow.
