HB, I'm getting the impression folks are be-littling the Jags accomplishment based on a "building consensus," of this being a down year for the Birds. I'm not going to ask for your feedback on this in that I know of the resulting Gettysburg address response I may get...:lol2:

Down year or not Cooper knocked the king, prince, serf ( based on what some are saying ) off the throne and yes the great run had to end sometime. So rather than substantiating or not the results of this game let's celebrate the fact that Cooper plays both Ryle and SK. Cooper will have their opportunities to validate their place on a potential NKY throne.

Cooper is in the catbird seat ( all pun intended ), they earned it. It's hs football folks. However you want to spin it, live through it. It's about kids growing and getting ready for the "game of life."

And btw a big hats off to the objective Bird fans who are focusing on "constructive criticism" and encouraging the flock.

5A, 6A football in NKY is comparable to a bee hive just knocked out of a tree after week 0. Ultimately it will come down to who wants it more, who executes, some luck, strength, and will power. As hs football always does...

And sk1 don't think I didn't know your neers where losing to a 2A school past midway in the 3rd. Turnovers haunt and you are fortunate the ball bounced in your favor.

The birds lose, it's Sunday morning at 8:30a and there are 12+ folks dialed into this thread. Guru is getting fat and happy!

Have a great Sunday folks and keep the Covcath RB Darlington in your prayers this week for ideal an ideal recovery and healing from an ankle injury. Because we know that those blueboys pray for our kids when we sustain injuries against them....?

So, don't comment on the game or discuss whether Highlands is any good this year, just celebrate Cooper's "opportunities to validate their place on a potential NKY throne"? I understand you are happy for Cooper and would just like to leave it at that -- especially after the first game of the season -- but we have to do more.

Also, are you throwing some shade on the Neers?

Does "BOOM!!" mean you like the post or that you you just blew it up?

The post is perfect. There is so much hand wringing and over analyzation. It was apparently a good game. Things happen. This is hardly the end of either teams season. The way high-school football is setup, you don't need to win many games to make the playoffs. No need to pile on (either team.... Good or bad). These are young men and the most important objectives are for them to have fun and learn life lessons....while hopefully learning the game and winning as many games as they can.

Ugh

So Highlands D was bad last night? Please explain that one to me please with some examples. Was Cooper really that much of an offensive juggernaut? Outside of the two long touchdowns, what exactly could the D have done better. And you talk about keeping your best players on the field on both sides of the ball, who exactly would that be?

Everyone talks about having Beal on offense, but where does he play? Putting him a wide receiver does what exactly?

1. Defensive alignment. LBs not playing end man on LOS crooectly. If he blocks down, you must squeeze him to prevent the cut back or to take on a trap. HHS' got up field way too far and allowed easy cut backs. From the stands, I heard Coach Jones yelling about this multiple times.

2. DBs turning open to receivers incredibly slowly or in the wrong direction. I understand 27 is The team's best athlete and a senior leader, but he should not be pulled off the field and replaced (multiple times) by a sophomore because coaches are yelling at him for alignment and opening to wrong receivers.

3. Poor tackling. Too many arm tackles and people not bringing their feet to make a tackle. The only one on the field that stuck someone was 54 and 10; one of which should never have to make as many tackles as he did as a safety.

Those are three obvious things I picked up from being in the stands and re watching the game on TV when it was on replay. The good thing? They're all correctable. However, for someone who claims to bleed blue and wants to see the team be successful, you seem to be solely putting the blame on the offense for this loss. Could they have played better on O? Yes! But football is a team game 100% and all of your posts have basically said "the defensive side of the ball did nothing wrong, it was the offense". No clue who you are, but my guess is little Johnny plays D... Time to stop taking things so personal and take the blinders off.

I agree with the sentiment, but this site generates income based on the "analyzation." In fact, I think it's encouraged.

So, my analysis of the game.

Cooper picked up where they left off last year. They will have a successful season. How successful will depend on a lot of things over many weeks. But, it looks pretty good for them in NKY especially considering that SK had a hard time with a 2A school with a freshman QB.

Highlands did not -- for the first time in 8 seasons -- pick up where they left off. Offense needs a good amount of work, defense needs a little. But, Highlands has a lot of talented kids and a bunch of excellent coaches; both of which work very hard. I have no idea how Highlands' season will end. But I do know that because of the kids and coaches it will end as good as it possibly can.

I would expect a tremendous amount of improvement this week vs CC. Wienrich and staff will do what they have to do in order to correct the mistakes. Playing at home will be nice as well. Looking forward to the game against the Camels.

2006. Highlands lost 45-0 at St. X. I believe the Birds were 7-5 that season. They got a little better after that season. Good thing they kept that coach around.

Oops. X game may have been 05.

Content1, to answer your post, which I couldn't agree with more, whenever a pereniel powerhouse both in state and as many will remind people at every turn over the last 5 years a nationally recognized program gets knocked off by a team that even before the game was known to have a pretty good team returning but was widely overlooked then the majority will talk about how down the powerhouse must be instead of giving all the credit to the team

that was clearly the better team.

Its simply a game. The sky isn't falling. I am seeing people within the same fanbase arguing with each other because they are in a rare area they aren't used to. I keep reading a member defend the defense over and over again and wanting to put most of the blame on the offense. A couple things come to mind. 1 why do you have to put blame anywhere? It's as if Cooper didn't win the game but instead Highlands lost the game. That is wrong. Cooper won period.

2. Why try and put the only blame on the offense? The offense didn't give up a 82 yard TD in the first play they were on the field. They didn't give up another 30+yard TD pass and they also didn't give up over 6 yards a rush by Armstrong for over 180 yards and 3 TD's.

Can you you be upset with the way the Highlands offense executed? Sure, but it wasn't like they were going against bad defense. They were going against the best part of the Cooper team. The Highlands defense Was stifled as much as the offense was by the Cooper team period.

I made a comment in the prediction thread when there was a poster who statef he didn't know who the starters were for Highlands or their size but went ahead and made a prediction of a blowout. I called him out and asked how he could come up with a prediction when you clearly don't know anything about either team. I commented on what Cooper had coming back and even explained how Cooper had more than half of their defensive starters out with injury before the SK game last year so don't base your knowledge on Cooper from that game. Very few listened and still predicted blowouts. They were warned that it would be a lot closer than what they thought. Now this isn't every HHS fan, many knew what the Birds would be facing this week but many others have Cooper no chance.

The bottom line comes down to this. You will always have fans that are so deep inside their own program that if they actually lose there has to be a reason other than the better team won. There has to be something bigger than that.

This wasn't a game lost due to injuries or suspensions or bad ref's or turnovers or fluke Hail Mary or any other possible excuse one could think of. This was a game of two teams facing each other and one was simply better. I'm curious at how many games over the last several years that a team lost to Highlands, there was infighting among the fanbase of the losing team thinking that there must be something terribly wrong with their team because they lost to Highlands and shouldn't have. I would bet there wasn't a lot of that.

Highlands coaching staff is too good to blame them for a loss. They can only do the best they can with the players they have.

HS preview is out today in Enquirer.

Big spread on Hergott.

Is there a link to the article?

The Enquirer articles are the same they have been putting online all week. The front page is a huge picture Highlands three main players.

I'm old school still get the paper delivered on weekends. Sorry no link

No, not at all, simply defending the defense against those that act like they were a weak spot in the game. Yeah, my kid plays defense and pretty damn well I might add. Have no blinders on, but I am not going to get on here and rip on high school kids like many so called supporters have. Yes I expect there to be changes this week on both sides of the ball in technique and possibly in personnel as well.

I too went back and watched the game on tape twice now and must say that I am quite mystified with some things that I saw as well. I expect some of these things to be taken care of, but not real sure that all can be addressed.

I noticed a bunch of Birds leaning forward with hands on their knees. If they are platooning what could this be attributed to? Was this summer's conditioning any different than yrs past? I know they didn't have access to the field for a period of weeks but with the new field house I can't imagine they lacked facilities. Just curious.

And this is where platoon football can pay off. As Q states, expect big improvement. These kids who platoon will get twice the work and attention this week that players on a team that doesn't platoon. Every practice coaches and players work on their side of the ball getting things fixed and improved. No splitting time on offense one day and defense the next. Total focus and work on your position and your job - every day.

Maybe just maybe they need to take a look at the JV team and replace some with the Varsity. Then maybe we could get somewhere. Oh no did I say that out loud
