Fascinating Stuff - Will the GOP Ever Make Inroads?

Featured Replies

It was the association of civil rights legislation with John F Kennedy and Lyndon Banes Jonson that solidified Black loyalty to the Democratic Party for good. JFK proposed and LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which outlawed public discrimination. LBJs Republican opponent, Barry Goldwater, opposed it garnering Johnson 94% of the black vote that year, which was a record until 2008. Johnson later signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act.By this time the majority of Blacks had become Democrats. By 2012 only 16% of African Americans considered themselves Republicans. Although 88% of African Americans voted for Democrat John Kerry in 2004, 44% consider themselves to have a moderate political viewpoint. Only 28% consider themselves liberal in their political views. Over the last 40 years Black Americans have consistently voted overwhelmingly for the Democratic presidential candidate. The most votes any Republican candidate received from Blacks since 1968 was Gerald Ford in 1976 (15%).

The graphs are pretty dramatic.

What do blacks have to show for this overwhelming loyalty? The worst run cities in the country are disproportionately Democratic ran and have been for decades. Blacks suffering the most wide spread poverty are in a majority of Democrat controlled areas.

It has become a perception thing and the Democrats are winning the perception game by a landslide while in reality doing very little to help the plight of blacks, IMO.

If you are a black conservative you are called the worst thing you can be called, an Uncle Tom. Every Black Republican that runs for office has that label hung around there neck by liberals. As has been said on this site, most blacks consider that the worst thing another black can call them or say to them.

There are bad, sorry, horrible elected officials in both parties, I know I've voted for them in both parties. But as long as Democrats continue to receive such high levels of support why change anything they are doing. If I voted for candidates from the same party to be mayor and the city council for decades and my city had continually declined for decades I think I'd at least give the other guys a chance. At least send a message that you can't count on my vote just because of the color of my skin, you need to earn my vote...not expect it.

The same thing is starting to happen with the Hispanic vote because of the Republican stance on the immigration issue. It has been a huge factor in recent national elections in favor of the Democrats.

Which begs the original question.

I don't think so...I'd love to hear what they could do to make those inroads.

No, they will never make inroads and I believe they should not try. They need to focus their energies elsewhere.

Many Southern Congressman voted against the Civil Rights Bill. It only passed because Republicans came to the aid of LBJ (bipartisanship) to pass the bill. The Dems have made it look like they were the only ones to vote for the bill, when that is not the truth.

Although I have many problems with the current leadership of the GOP, I see in many of the younger members who want what is best for all Americans, not dividing people by any grouping. For me, the Dems can only receive votes by dividing voters and promising this or that group something, instead of what is best for the country.

As long as it favors white males, that what the Republicans will say this is best for the country in their actions and bills. Most Republicans really still don't get it.

GOP has two big problems: (a) attracting non-white voters and (b) what to do with the Tea Party wingnuts. GOP decided decades ago that its ticket to success was to go after white Democrats, largely males in the South and Midwest, by embracing issues of importance to them: guns, social concerns, etc. But by doing so, the GOP distanced itself further from non-whites, who are growing politically every day simply due to changing demographics.

Until politicians stop racing trying to "embrace" certain races, religions, genders, etc., and start embracing WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE as a whole and make policy and legislation that move this country as a whole forward and in a positive way, then we will continue to be mired in this mess we have created.

This whole political mess sickens me.

Minorities and the poor will always vote for their "fair share" of free stuff provided by the rich and working class and will keep voting for anyone who will keep the checks flowing....

And we have exhibit A in why I no longer even consider voting Republican. All Republicans don't hold this attitude, but far too many do. What is worse, the sane Republicans are afraid to call out the wingnuts.

What is racial about creating an economic atmosphere were businesses can grow and prosper were they create jobs? Job creation allows for less government dependency and lower taxes. It also allows the government to help those who may need help temporally and those who actually need help for life. There is a place for government oversight, but in today's world it seems as if government wants to regulate the smallest details in our lives and businesses.

Smaller government is good for everyone, as each individual can live and prosper to the fullest of their abilities. We will see to those few that need help to cover the basic needs of life. To achieve this there needs to be limited government to allow businesses to start and grow and to allow current businesses to expand. With growth comes new tax revenue to pay for government without increasing the tax rates. Smaller government also reduces the need to spend money and wanting to raise taxes.

What legislation has the GOP pushed for in the last few decades that would ONLY favor white males? I am sure some will point out lowering the highest tax brackets but that favors ANYONE regardless of race or gender in the tax bracket. If you really want to stretch it, I guess you could point to legislation which challenges Affirmative Action but that would could be argued legislation which ends favoritism to none white more so than legislation that favors whites. Just curious of examples.

Let's see:

Not supporting Minimum Wage, Immigration, Equal Pay for Females, ObamaCare, ....
