June 5, 201511 yr Roy's and Ronies, guess I will be heading to Milford. It was real nice when it was at Newport. I remember breakfast at Grants and no game systems but going to Tilt in Florence mall or Doc holidays on the West side.

June 5, 201511 yr Zantigo's was da BOMB! So much better than that Taco Bell crap. Roy Rogers, again so much better than Arby's. Roney's (formerly Roy Rogers) broke ground on their new building in April. 314 Chamber Drive = Milford. I am anxiously awaiting the grand opening! Weidemann's bakery in Ft. Thomas. I cried when they closed. Gotta second the Zantigos and the Roy Rogers. Hope the re-opening is authentic and they don't change a thing! There was a cafeteria style restaurant in Kenwood called Hot Shoppes. Ate there once a week growing up. Best mashed taters, dark gravy, corn bread, and liver/onions around. Yep, I was one of them kids. Loved a good liver and onion plate. And they had a mean tapioca pudding for dessert. :smug: Mister Softee Ice Cream Trucks...best soft serve and sundaes ( on wheels ) around back in the 70s.

Growing up (not around here) we had Mister Frostee, Good Humor and Freezer Fresh at one time or another.

Just saw a Mister Softee truck in Newport a couple of weeks ago, and one in Covington about a month ago. I've heard some to say that they don't trust the creepy looking characters that run these trucks these days, but the dude looked to be a respectable clean cut guy. As a total coincidence I wore a Mister Softee T-Shirt just to be nostalgic on the Saturday before Memorial Day to a cook out in Newport. 20 minutes after arriving I hear the Mister Softee jingle from the truck making its way down the street that I was on. The Ice Cream guy was totally on board for it as he saw me approaching the truck, and he too got a kick out of the strange coincidence.
June 5, 201511 yr Definitely miss Roy Rogers. There was one within walking distance of my house as a kid. Double R & a Holster of Fries. Roast beef was awesome too, not the fake crap that Arby's has. Roy's was also the first to introduce a Roast Beef wrap in a tortilla with veggies and sauce, and called it the "Stroller", as in you could eat it while walking. Great fried chicken too. When Hardee's first opened in the location that once was Roy's they continued to serve Roy's Fried Chicken for a while before eventually phasing it out. Burger Queen (I think in Erlanger?) was the first place that I ever recall having breaded potato wedges. Really good. Lee's Famous Recipe has them, but 9 times out of 10 they're too greasy and mushy. Unless they're crispy, forget about it. My older brother was the coach of my "D" league basketball team when I was about 7 or 8. Every Saturday after our games at the Boys Club he'd treat me to Burger Chef on Madison Ave. in Covington. My first favorite fast food joint, and going there was a real big deal. If the games were at Turner's Hall then he'd treat me to the White Castles that used to be right next to it when sliders were only 12 cents. All the Burger Chef's in Covington eventually turned briefly into a place called Shelby's, and all I recall that was distinctive about them was fries with the skins left on.
June 5, 201511 yr Red Fox is still open and still fantastic. Red Squirrel is still downtown as well. Right next door to the Snappy Tomato Pizza. Both are owned and operated by the same group.
