Formidable flood puts a damper on Newport High School sports - Story

Its almost a lake down at the Stadium. The football turf will be effected greatly and the baseball field is completely under water as well. Not sure when this will be drained as we will have to wait until the river level goes down.

Mystery of flooded Newport sports fields solved - Story

NEWPORT, Ky. - A city official in Northern Kentucky is admitting to possibly making the decision that caused flooding of high school athletic fields.

Nearly all the outdoor fields for Newport High School athletics were underwater for several days after heavy rains caused the Ohio River to reach levels not seen since 1997.

Inches, maybe feet of dark brown, murky water soaked the synthetic playing surfaces for the Wildcats’ football field and inundated basketball courts, the school's track and several baseball fields.

The flooded fields remained a mystery to principal Tony Watts until earlier this week. That was until Doug Roell stepped up and took credit for it.

Well, he took partial credit anyhow.

"That decision rests with me,” Roell, the community services director for the city of Newport told WCPO on Thursday.

Roell says the athletics fields just happen to be in spot identified as a retention or stormwater overflow area.

Because of that distinction, there's a pipe that runs from the fields to nearby Taylor Creek. It can be left open for rainwater to drain out, or closed to keep the creek from backing up and flowing onto the fields.

"So, you're kind of trying to figure out the idea timing between the two. Do you close it? Don't you close it? And if you close it, at what time so you actually minimize the flooding down at the park?” Roell asked rhetorically.

“Unfortunately, we weren't too successful this time."

Roell says the damage shouldn't take long to clean up – "a couple days, I would think."

Newport High School’s athletic director, Matt Schmitz, isn't quite so optimistic. He said it could be months.

"We'll have the sanitation company come in and inspect everything because besides just the turf and grass and the actual surface, we’ve got dugouts, the fences, the walkways, the water fountains, the equipment – everything that was touched by that will have to be inspected."

And he worries the recently installed artificial turf on the football field may need to be replaced.

The high school staff hopes to have a sanitation crew on campus Friday to inspect the damage.

No one from the city or the school would discuss an estimate on the cost of possible repairs or whether not they expect insurance to cover most of the damage.

In the meantime, the athletic programs at Newport High School are forced to play elsewhere. Community leaders and other schools have stepped up to let them use their facilities.

OK, so I'm curious and confused by something. The copyright date on both of the stories linked in these posts is from 2013, which indicates that is when they were published/aired.

Does that mean that this flooding at Newport has happened again in this manner, two years later?

That is kinda weird. But it had to have been a misprint on the publishing because the AD wasn't at Newport 2 years ago.
