Once, maybe the very first time Mf and Danville played for the state title at Old Cardinal Stadium, Mf lost a game to the Ads where our extra point was blocked for the game winner so we know how it feels on both sides of the fence

 

Toothpick, I thought of that game watching it online Saturday. I thought that the older Cardinal fans knew exactly how the Jackets felt. All the way back in 1987.

Ref was clearly looking at Mayfield when he asked and waited for a response. Coaches were there so I don't know why they would let it go wrong.

 

found it in the video. It is clear that the Mayfield coach is telling what direction. I think the ref was confused because Mayfield picked defense and then he tapped the WB kid on the shoulder and said offense and went back to Mayfield.

 

Again, not that it matter because WB would likely chose the same direction but it does show human error.

Let me simplify this. Williamsburg went to the red zone 5 TIMES and came away with 6 points. They may have outperformed Mayfield on total offensive yards gained but they don't award points for that. The superior team doesn't go inside the 5 on 5 occasions and come out with 2 field goals. The superior team STOPS the other team from scoring 5 times in the red zone THEN scores enough touchdowns and kicks enough extra points on offense to beat the other team.

Mayfield fans I am not taking a shot at your team. The better team won and well deserved. My comments was just simple I thought for 3 1/2 quarters your team was out played and out coached. A lot can be said about your team playing what I felt was not there best performance and still able to win. Congrats. It wasn't a knock. Your right it is a 4 quarter game. My point was simply I feel for the Williamsburg team because the played they way they needed to win the game.

 

While I understand what you're saying, I disagree they outplayed and outcoached Mayfield for 3 1/2 qtrs. The 1st qtr, I'll give it to you. They had 2 nice drives and came away with 10 points while Mayfield had the ball a whopping 3 plays the whole quarter and one of those was a 20-25 loss on a high snap. I thought Mayfield settled in the 2nd qtr and got 2 scores and while W'Burg still moved the ball some, were pretty much in check, especially from a big play standpoint. I thought Mayfield played pretty evenly in the 3rd qtr, outscoring Williamsburg to go up 21-10. Again, other than a couple of super human catch and throws, the Cardinal D was now shutting down the run and the rollouts from the QB. I definitely give WBurg the advantage in the 4th qtr with the 11 point comeback and regaining momentum. Yes, the total yards differential was pretty big, the majority came on 3 big pass plays. Other than the one in the endzone that ultimately tied the game, the other 2 only resulted in a total of 3 points. So, those big pass plays count towards the overall yardage, for sure, I thought it was equally as important the way Mayfield held up after those 2 big pass plays. Those things don't show up on the stat sheet, but, still loomed large in the outcome of the game. Maybe those plays don't look as fancy or flashy, but, I guarantee you those coaches understood how big a plays those were. I also don't think Mayfield was outcoached. I think Williamsburg just made some great plays and beat our DBs a few times. I thought W'Burg coaches had a great game plan and they kept Mayfields D off balance, but, that was more the kids executing than it was Mayfield coaches having the kids in bad positions.

Just for debate sake, lets just say Williamsburg completely out played Mayfield. It means nothing other pride for Williamsburg. The Yellowjackets played good enough to win but for a few mishaps

You all crack me up with the debates. It's really very simple, we won and have another title in our case so go and enjoy it. That is what I am doing as I could careless what any or all feel or think.

Just one point of clarification, if someone could humor me. Didn't Williamsburg's first touchdown come in the red zone? I thought the QB ran the bootleg for like a 12 yard touchdown run.

Now a prominent attorney and radio personality told me some stats that were overlooked here. One of which was how we stopped them in the red zone and they didn't us. The other was how we took the turnovers from them. Another was the 3rd and 4th down conversions that we beat them at. Another was the kick return yardage. I guess the problem people have with us winning is the yardage. I have continuously noticed over the years at state and in this season this year how we often have less yardage than the teams we beat. Check the Hazard and Fairview games for instance. The reason for this is because of our special teams and how we get turnovers. We all said all year long that our defense would have to win games for us and they did yet again. Just bending until they get into the red zone and then stoning them.

That sounds very familiar. Pretty much the same thing Mayfield did in the Beechwood game - execute better in the red zone, converted on 3rd downs many times, won the turnover battle. The only difference is Mayfield did nothing on special teams versus Beechwood. Beechwood lined up in punt formation once and ran a fake for a 1st down. Beechwood's kickoff strategy kept Mayfield from getting anything on returns.

 

The other thing in the Beechwood game was big plays by Mayfield. There were four offensive plays in the game that accounted for about 2/3rds of Mayfield's total yardage. Bright may have averaged less than 2 yards a carry on his 25 or so carries until the 20 yard run at the very end of the game. Big plays hurt Beechwood. I don't recall any big plays by Mayfield in the Williamsburg game. Mayfield always seems to come up with a couple big plays every time Beechwood plays them.
