Probably to maintain the most competitive prices along with Costco.

Costco is a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq exchange. It is the second largest retailer in the US, and its stores actually do more volume than Sam's clubs.

 

I believe the membership wharehouse stores like Sam's, Costco and BJ's check receipts to insure only members are making purchases. I'm not sure but the receipt checking policy may be in their membership agreement, giving them the authority and permission to do so.

Sure, they check the receipts but the folks that check you out the door have no way of knowing if you're a member or not. They do a quick count of items on the rct and what's in your cart, use the million dollar highlighter swipe and Boom, you're on your way.

Agreed...at Sam's only show my card to get in and at checkout.

 

I don't mind showing my receipt at the door to leave, because the cost of shoplifting impacts all of us. And, I believe in the death penalty or at least sacrificing body parts for all crimes. :taz:

FWIW Walton Family has very very very little to do with the day to day operations the way that Sam did. He was hands on everything and I do mean everything. Son (Rob) is Chairman of the Board, but President and CEO hasn't been a Walton since before Sam passed away.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I've been under the impression that with technology most modern department stores and grocery stores have a system in place that would set off an alarm if a product had not gone through the purchase procedure at checkout. I thought that each item has a scan thingy on it that once it's actually been scanned at checkout and paid for that it would not set off the alarm.

 

There was a General Dollar store in Covington that had to close because it was rated the very worst GD store in the whole country for shoplifting, and it was no longer worth it to the company to keep it open. The manager told me that he tried to stop it the best that he could and was able to do fairly well compared to the manager before him, but it just wasn't enough to GD to make them reconsider. He said that people would rip items out of their packaging to avoid having the alarm go off as they left the store.

Only a handful of items have those tags in them that will set the alarms off. Most skilled thieves know exactly where to cut a box to remove them, even thought they are on the inside.

 

Walmart loses around to $2 Billion Plus in theft and accounting losses of merchandise each year in the US alone.

Toots, to answer your question, either stick a sock in it or shop somewhere else.

 

I don't mean to be abrasive but many retail stores are put in an impossible position when it comes to loss prevention and they have to survive and keep prices low.
