As a Private business I think they are allowed to ask for receipts...think about it this way. If they weren't a Lawsuit Magnet like Walmart would have already been sued over this procedure.

I think the issue is the court systems are way way too easy on shoplifters. In other words, the benefits far outweigh the potential costs for the thieves.

Sure they can ask, but what can they do about it if you refuse. I say nothing and additionally they run the risk of committing their own crimes and opening themselves up to all kinds of civil issues.

We never did anything to anyone that refused unless we also thought they were shoplifting.

 

As I said most shoplifters now are just walk-outs, they don't stick it down their pants all of the time. Greeters are a deterrent and not a great one at that. But they do deter some theft and help ID more.

No doubt. And with the follow-up work officers have to do with crimes, it's nuts. There are many instances where I work that an officer will make an arrest, and by the time they do all of the paperwork, the offender has been released and shoplifted again.

I find going to Wal-Mart to be extremely bothersome and I avoid Wal-Mart like the plague. But, when I do go, this is among the least bothersome things about Wal-Mart to me.

Costco is a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq exchange. It is the second largest retailer in the US, and its stores actually do more volume than Sam's clubs.

 

I believe the membership wharehouse stores like Sam's, Costco and BJ's check receipts to insure only members are making purchases. I'm not sure but the receipt checking policy may be in their membership agreement, giving them the authority and permission to do so.

Walmart started doing it due to theft, managers and others are held accountable for inventory losses and this is one of many measures put in over the years.

 

It is a big fight between the stores in the field and LaLa land in Arkansas. Bentonville want's nothing locked up or secured in any manner and if they could the stores would lock up in some manner most items over $40 :lol2:

 

Store mangers make a LOT of money and when they can get fired for having a couple of bad inventories they'll do what ever they can to keep those jobs.

I've been checked at some Target's and K-Mart's, mostly just around the holidays.
