If showing your receipt as a deterrent to crime is such a big deal by all means SHOP SOMEWHERE ELSE!

 

By refusing and acting like a butt all your doing is making it easier for the people that are stealing to continue to live off of the rest of us.

I have never had anyone check a receipt at any Wal Mart I've attended. Sam's Club they do, and it boggles my mind why they do it. I buy $400 worth of items, loads of bags, and they check the items for less than 2 seconds before giving it the highlight mark. If I added in any item they would have no clue.

You'd be surprised how many people just walked out with stuff without paying at Sam's club when they tried to stop doing that. When Sam's started I don't think they did that either, but the loss was crazy. Most early members were small businesses and not individuals back then which makes it even worse.

For the record, I haven't refused, and I wouldn't cause a scene. I thought for a while they only ask to see the receipt when you have an item that won't fit in a bag, like a large box, etc.

 

Most of the local folks at that post are great, but there is one who takes it a little too serious, IMO. I gave her a hard time once for stopping me, not in a mean way but I did offer to run down the 2 people who slipped by while she was checking me and bring them back to justice. I think she checks me every time now. :irked:

 

Anyway, back to my question, and JD your input would be great. What does the law say about this? Do I have to show receipt and what happens if I refuse?

Exactly, it is a show more so than an actual check of your items. It is probably enough to deter some people from risking a theft though.

If you'd just blast a giant fart next time she grabs your receipt, bet she'd let you pass (no pun intended) next time through.

I don't think legally you have to unless they are accusing you of theft. I'm trying to make sure I'm waiting on an up to date answer.

 

Again Walmart does that as a deterrent to push out thefts...cashiers should be telling customers to keep their receipts out just to make it go faster and be less of a hassle.

You could be wearing 4 inch heels and out run the greeters at WalMart. I'm sorry, but a 75 year old lady who weighs under 100 lbs. soaking wet is not a deterrent for me. They need to employ some big boys as greeters; someone you are afraid to walk past even when you aren't doing anything wrong.

Those old ladies are perceptive though, I'd say 20% or more of the shoplifters caught are because they notice someone acting strange or refusing to stop when asked for a receipt. They then point them out the next time they are in the store and the Asset Protection folks watch them for a while to see if they are up to anything. In most cases they aren't but often the Greeters put you on to the right people.

I think the issue is the court systems are way way too easy on shoplifters. In other words, the benefits far outweigh the potential costs for the thieves.
