I hate that Wal Mart has turned their friendly, helpful greeters into a pain in my behind.

 

Our Wal Mart greeters are located just beyond the checkout registers. It irks me to no end when you leave the register, walk 20 feet and the greeter is standing there like a pit bull with her hilighter demanding your receipt. Then they give it the once over and put their mark on there, but they aren't really checking your purchases. It is a show, IMO.

 

If I am suspected of something, then say so. If not, then why are you harrassing me?

 

What are my rights? Do I have to show them my receipt? Do they have the right to detain me if I refuse?

I have never been stopped and asked to show my receipt around NKY. I was at one in BG this past weekend and had no trouble there either. Sounds like they're going to follow what they do in their Sam's stores.

No you don't. Just walk away fast and see if their scooter can catch you to beat you with their cane to detain you.

Sounds like a question for JD. Personally, I walk right past them; no eye contact; no acknowledgment. If they want to check me, they can chase after me to do so.

I usually stop then hammer them for wasting my time. Next time I'm going to take off running and jump in my car like the Dukes of Hazzard.

There are several reasons that they do that and reasons why they check some and not others. In 2C's case they probably profiled him based on his "look"

 

You guys would be shocked at how bold people are especially this time of year stealing. Easiest way is to just load your cart, walk through a closed register and boogey right out the door. The Greeters actually deter and stop a lot of theft each year but of course they don't get 100% of it.

 

Unfortunately it is a cost of doing business when you have so many people that would rather steal for a living than work.

I hate showing my receipt. My local walmart used to do this all the time, but they don't seem to do it much anymore. The only time I've been asked recently, is when I'm exiting through the Garden center.

 

To answer your question. Yes you can refuse. They cannot detain you unless they have reasonable suspicion. Your refusal to show your receipt doesn't necessarily give them a reason to detain you, as shoplifting laws are very specific...they must see you conceal the merchandise, not lose sight of you, and watch you pass the last point of sale without attempting to pay. Or if the item is a large item and not concealed, they must witness you passing the last point of sale and attempting to exit the building without paying for the item. Typical, the greeter is not in a position to do so. However, refusing to show your receipt will likely cause a fuss, and may get you banned from the store. My response would be "I'll show you my receipt at the customer service desk as I'm returning this item". And feel free to ask for the manager.

At the local (Maysville) WalMart, the greeter is just inside the entrance. All s/he does is greet.

When Walmart first started carrying Flat Screen TV's I had a woman come in and unbolt a display TV and steal it. Loaded it into a cart and when the greeter was busy getting a cart for someone she walked right out behind them. Same lady came back 8 hours later and got a second TV, four days later she got a third. On the third one as she went out the door she looked up at the security camera and stuck her tongue out at it.

 

I caught her on her fourth one, (Which happened to be the first time she did it when I was in the building) she had $1800 in merchandise including her TV in her cart when I stopped her...she fought us like a bear.

 

Had some guys a couple of years ago would come in and get 4 or 5 chainsaws at a time, one would cause a minor distraction (fall down or knock over a display) while the one with the saws went out the door.

 

One guy would let the greeters check his receipt, he would buy a cart of merchandise and pay for it in electronics or garden center and leave out one door. Someone else would bring his receipt right back in and would walk out a different door with an identical cart of merchandise using his receipt (that was only a few minutes old)...that's why they started marking or hole punching receipts...so it couldn't be reused to walk out with the same stuff again. They then would use the receipt to go down the road to the next Walmart and get a refund on one load and then keeping the second load for free.

 

The Greeters checking receipts are unfortunately because of theft that has continued to increase over the past decade.

Actually those are corporate rules...by law as soon as you conceal the merchandise you can be apprehended, even though most companies rules are as you stated.
