Will Patrick Towles play Pro Football?

Featured Replies

Fans of Logan Thomas said the same thing a couple of years ago. We really need to see his development

You mean the one wasn't even recruited as a QB yet got drafted? Yeah, PT is already better than Logan Thomas is right now.

I think so but I hope he stays in Lexington for two more seasons. I can see him in NYC for the Heisman presentation in a few years.

He's only started 8 games, tough to call. After next year you can probably get a clearer picture, but he still has those wow moments. Can't wait to see his development in the future.

Before the 2012 season, folks looked at Thomas and his performance as a Sophmore and said he could be the first pick in the draft- 6'6" 250lbs, runs a 4.5, throws for 3,000 yards and runs like a deer. Then, he played his junior and senior years and threw around 30 picks in the ACC.

My point is that before anyone states that Towles will be a top QB, based on physical attributes, in 2016, maybe we should let him start 10 games. How about he finishes a season? JMO.

I look forward to seeing how Towles develops with Neal Brown tutoring him and the young talent he has around him that will develop right alongside him.

Still too early to know, but I'd say his chances are good.

This. Physically he may be there. Mentally is a whole other ballgame.

Waaaaay too early to tell.

Tons of college quarterbacks with great resumes never last in the NFL. UK has had a few of them. The Bengals have had a few that were billed to be franchise QB's that never worked out.

I'd guess he will at least spend some time on a practice squad in the NFL, and could certainly make a roster. Not even close to a lock on the roster thing at this point though.

Last season there was talk about whether or not he should stick around at UK. Many a folks were saying his mechanics weren't good enough because of his slow release. Amazing how much things have changed in the past few months.

I did- Towles went 19-36 for 146 yards with no TD's. He didn't elevate his offense at all. Since the thread is about Towles and his professional aspirations, I think it is fair to point to this offensive performance. IMO, this proves that he hasn't demonstrated the consistency and doesn't display the lights out elite level skills that guarantee that he will be a pro. And, yes, this thread would have been laughable after that performance.

Hod did Manziel fare against LSU defenses?

I never got that but I felt like people were actually in the know. They weren't. Kid has the pedigree, physical package, and leadership skills to lift the boat. Kid was lights our in state championship games. He wants to be in big games and perform. That can't be coached.

I echo what Bengal Maniac says that I don't think that we can say for sure judging by one game, good or bad. I'm sure I share what we're all hoping for is that he will. He has certainly proved that he's worth the discussion. I sure hope that he does. How cool would that be?

I don't see it yet but he does show improvement. Next year will be very telling. If he continues to play like he did yesterday I see no reason why he shouldn't at least make a NFL camp.

Physically talented enough, no doubt, reading defenses not yet, and there were two great examples in this game and one from the LSU game I will use.

The two in the MSU game were the commentator talked up the OLB for recognizing the play and almost picking of the hitch to the WR....well the OLB was lined up on the slot and when he see pass he has the flats, it is not route recognition it is called Cover 3 but.....that guy is who the QB is supposed to be looking at to make his decision on the throw, if he stays on the slot for anytime hit the hitch, if he runs to the outside or flats hit the seam route right now, basic basic read also going into the game knowing that MSU is one of the few teams that like Cover 3.

The other one was the the first play of the game against LSU, if the ball wasn't batted down it was a pick six because of not reading the read key or not reading him correctly.

Everyone thinks that the reason it was a qb battle for the starting spot is because of how much Towles improved, yes he has improved no doubt but it was also because Barker was way further along than they anticipated on both the mental and physical parts of the game.

Do you really want to compare the consistency and skills exhibited by Johnny to what we have seen from Towles? If that is the bar, there are not a lot of guys that will make the NFL.

He definitely has the tools. Size and arm strength. He has some moxy about him too.

Is that enough? Sometimes it isn't. Only time will tell but he has a lot of things the NFL looks for. He hasn't played much so it's impossible to say.

I would guess that if he continues to grow he'll likely be drafted or signed as a free agent. Becoming a long term starter is another thing and he'll need to continue to grow as a player to be considered.
