I'd say it would depend on if the drivers in front of him drove around you...

Let me start by saying I'm not a auto racing fan, nor do I know the first thing about driving a race car. I don't know who Tony Stewart is or his past problems so when I look at this incident the one that I see being a crazy hot head was the poor guy who got hit. I didn't see any particularly egregious moves out of Stewart that caused the guy to wreck in the first place. The video of the incident as shown I don't see how any conclusion can be drawn other than this was a tragic accident. It appears to me that the car directly in front of Tony Stewart had to swerve hard not to hit the guy and it also appears that Tony Stewart was swerving to go around the guy as well. That being said we get only a second of film to make that decision so I think it is becoming almost a Rorschach test for people to project their feelings onto. I think we need to see more video, more angles, more witnesses, etc before placing blame.

Do you really believe it would be handled the same if the kid had done this to TS? Hope you never find yourself on that slanted side of the law. And you are right it is my opinion. At least you got that correct.

 

You're right, what the hell was I thinking. I forgot celebrities get to do what they want in this country. Someone get on the phone to Bristol County Jail and let them know so they can send Aaron home.

If there was reason to believe they intentionally hit you I imagine there would be an investigation and a lot of speculation by the public, including a bunch of people convinced the driver did nothing wrong and you had it coming, even if they were acting maliciously.

If the roles were reversed the kid would be behind bars. Tony will not be charged for this but clearly played a major role in the young mans death. Power of the celebrity wins again.

 

Same thing I told the wife on our drive down to Valhalla when she read me the story. I told her Tony may be partly responsible but he will get off because he is a celebrity period. Too many fans will defend him no matter what happened. It's just the reality of the day we live in.

I think the most telling thing will be how other Nascar drivers act towards TS. They know how the cars work and how they handle. If they avoid Tony like he has Ebola,then it's safe to assume his recklace behavior played a part in this kids death. I don't think anyone thinks Tony wanted to kill the kid. If you do, then you're a moron.

listening to the pundits on ESPN etc. talk about how it isnt fair to blame Tony etc. only one thing kept coming to mind.

Tony has his reputation because of things he has done in the past and his ppersonality. So i do not think it is wrong for anyone who thinks Tony may have some fault in this for thinking that. Don't be upset at people who think a certain way due to things you have been known to do Tony.

Count me in this camp. Watching the 1:05 video of the accident is the most auto racing I've ever seen, that being said, blame is squarely on the Ward kid for getting out of his vehicle and standing in the middle of the track like some "bad-donkey".

I don't think anyone has said Kevin Ward wasn't at fault or didn't place himself in harms way. The question no one has an answer for and never will get an answer for is what was Tony thinking?

Nascar and sprint cars handle much different. Maybe all nascar guys came up through sprint cars though, I don't know.

Now this I agree with. If Jimmy Johnson had run over the kid in the same way, there wouldn't be one post in here or elsewhere jumping on Johnson. No one would be saying what was "JJ" thinking. In fact, everyone would be ranting about how stupid Ward was. So that is the reverse side of Tony's "celebrity" working against him on this one.

Jimmie Johnson may be the most hated driver in NASCAR. IMO--Stewart is getting it much easier than Johnson would. If Johnson would have done this ... he wouldn't have to worry about jail. The Dale Jr fans would have already found a rope and a tree. (Rule Number 1 in NASCAR = the more you win--the more people that hate you. Dale Earnhardt had to die to get more than half of the people at a NASCAR race to cheer as opposed to Boo's ... Jeff Gordon had to go through major slumps to get 10% of the people to cheer for him at a race).

 

Being a race fan is much different than being a fan of other sports. It is life or death .. no middle ground ... which is the reason why you don't see many real race fans in this thread talking about the crazy guy who got out of his car at night with a black fire suit on. Anyone who follows racing ... knows that Stewart is the real hothead here ... not the 20 year old upstart.

So the fact that Tony Stewart is known to race on dirt tracks all across America and the fact that he has been racing for decades doesn't factor in to all of this for you? Tony Stewart is by far one of the most talented overall drivers ever. He races everywhere. Dirt, Nascar, IRL....he does it all. If there is any driver in the world that I would trust coming at me at 150 MPH and not harm me it is Tony Stewart. I don't care what the surface is. Add in the fact that he has been one of the biggest hot heads ever in racing and I think all of the scrutiny is within reason.

Good point. The real race fans know guys get out of their cars all of the time. Hell, I bet Tony Stewart has gotten out of his car and acted like Kevin Ward once or twice in his racing career.
