When your car is out of commission, they tow it to the infield or pit, which ever is closer. You don't ride along with it. I assume it's a fire risk. I've seen very few guys towed inside their cars to the infield or pit over the yrs.

I didn't mean stay in it when being towed. I mean stay in it until the track crew gets to you. Then get out and into the tow truck or pickup truck or ambulance or what ever. Why get out and play real life frogger when there is zero reason too.

I keep hearing folks speculate that Stewart tried to "throw mud" on the kid. Scare or disrespect him, in other words.

I goto a lot of dirt races throughout the summer and I think Tony is 100% innocent. Any race you goto the first thing that is ever said is if there's a caution your supposed to stay in the car until track crew safety workers get to you, unless the car is on fire. I hate it for the family, but Ward should've never left his car. The first car in the video very nearly hit him from what I saw.

Second point I've sat in one of these cars, and your view to the right is horrible that's without being strapped in. I see no way anything criminal happens to Tony Stewart. He maybe a hot head at times but in no way would he want this to happen to any race car drive. Tony's a dirt racer that's been pushed into the corporate spotlight thru Nascar etc. Tony still does alot to help out the sport of dirt racing. I was at Florence dirt track on Saturday night and I told my dad this morning if the same situation had happened at Florence nobody would've ever mentioned a word about it.

I love ya VOR ... but seriously ... the argument surrounding Ward getting out of his car in a black outfit on a poorly lit track" crap is getting old. (By the way--I have a buddy who was there ... he says that the track is lit up better than a Christmas tree on Christmas morning--I added a youtube video that he sent to me .. that showed what his opinion of the lighting was on the track. Also--keep in mind--the video everyone keeps using to call the lighting poor .. well ... remember--the lights are focused straight on to the track--my buddy says that the original video was taken behind most of the lights--making the video look darker).

 

As far as the rest goes ... these drivers have to get out of their car (I agree .. they don't have to run close to the guy that they are arguing with). As I stated in a previous post ... it is SOP that you get out of the car and get to the infield at nearly every track I have driven at.

 

If you want to read the long version .. go to page 2 and you will see that there are a few people who feel like Tony is to blame (me included). The short version ... this is 100% on Tony Stewart. He intentionally swerved at Ward (he was NOT trying to hit him--but that doesn't change the fact that he pulled his famous dirt track swerve fake out move). Ward ... getting out of his car and telling Tony what is up is an accepted (and sometimes encouraged) part of dirt track racing. No offense but you have no clue what TS was doing. There is absolutely no way you can be certain based on what we've seen now and know now.

 

And every dirt track driver I've talked to says they are Todd not to exit their car unless it's on fire. Any track that tells you to exit and get to the infield us opening up some major risks if cars are still going around the track, caution or not.

I found an incar video on youtube from Canandaigua (it isn't from a sprint car--but from a modified).

My opinion--this should end the conversation regarding how dark the track is to a driver:

 

(12:58 to 13:06 puts you on the backstretch where the accident occurred).

 

Thanks for posting the video. That convinces me even more how stupid it was to get out of a car and run down the track at another car. Ward didn't just stand there by his car. He charged down the track at Stewart's car.

He loves sprint car racing and actually bought a track and saved it from bankruptcy I believe the past year or two. He drives in these events to try and generate excitement and put fannies in the seats for the track, lots of these places are evidently struggling. He has FAR more to lose than he ever has to gain still racing this circuit, as witnessed last year when he was severely injured in a sprint car wreck. And, possibly, this event may also prove to be his downfall and he could lose a lot, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the on track death.
