Nascar and sprint cars handle much different. Maybe all nascar guys came up through sprint cars though, I don't know.

 

I know a lot go through the late model ranks which are also drifting machines. Hell for that matter, I'd venture to say the vast majority of Nascar drivers have dirt track raced.

Jimmie Johnson may be the most hated driver in NASCAR. IMO--Stewart is getting it much easier than Johnson would. If Johnson would have done this ... he wouldn't have to worry about jail. The Dale Jr fans would have already found a rope and a tree. (Rule Number 1 in NASCAR = the more you win--the more people that hate you. Dale Earnhardt had to die to get more than half of the people at a NASCAR race to cheer as opposed to Boo's ... Jeff Gordon had to go through major slumps to get 10% of the people to cheer for him at a race).

 

Being a race fan is much different than being a fan of other sports. It is life or death .. no middle ground ... which is the reason why you don't see many real race fans in this thread talking about the crazy guy who got out of his car at night with a black fire suit on. Anyone who follows racing ... knows that Stewart is the real hothead here ... not the 20 year old upstart.

 

It has nothing to do with beloved or hated. Use your NASCAR wisdom and fill in the blank with whomever you want. Stewart is getting trashed because of past behavior.

So the fact that Tony Stewart is known to race on dirt tracks all across America and the fact that he has been racing for decades doesn't factor in to all of this for you? Tony Stewart is by far one of the most talented overall drivers ever. He races everywhere. Dirt, Nascar, IRL....he does it all. If there is any driver in the world that I would trust coming at me at 150 MPH and not harm me it is Tony Stewart. I don't care what the surface is. Add in the fact that he has been one of the biggest hot heads ever in racing and I think all of the scrutiny is within reason.

Good point. The real race fans know guys get out of their cars all of the time. Hell, I bet Tony Stewart has gotten out of his car and acted like Kevin Ward once or twice in his racing career.

 

I've yet to see a video of anyone getting out of there car and running towards a car going as fast as 40 mph on dirt.

Rocket, any of those show anyone running towards a moving vehicle? At night? Wearing all black? On dirt?

I don't think there is any driver other than Tony Stewart that would be getting grilled like this under the exact same circumstances.

 

Kevin Ward is not the first person to exit his car during a caution and chase down the person who caused them to wreck and be in a position to exit the car during a caution. As I stated earlier, Kevin Ward is at fault. At the same time no one can dismiss Tony Stewart's past transgressions and inability to control his temper. Video proof shows he can't handle his temper behind the wheel or outside of the car.

Something to think about. Kevin Ward didn't clear the rear of his car and begin quickly moving lower on the track until the 31 second mark of the video. At least one car appears to pass within 5 feet of him as he starts his descent. He continues to try and position himself to get further down on the track to get closer to where Stewart will pass. The car in front of Stewart appeared to miss him by less than 3 feet. The rear of that car only cleared him at the 34 second mark. At the 36 second mark Stewart hit him. That means that coming out of a curve Stewart had less than 2 seconds to see Ward and avoid him. Stewart appeared to be running the exact same line as the car in front of him but you can see as he was hit that Ward had continued to move further down on the track. In an interview on ESPN today a veteran dirt track racer said that the peripheral vision in those cars is not good. Ward was only clear of his car for 5-6 seconds at most. I just find it hard to believe that Stewart had time to see that Ward was out of his car, get mad, decide to run as close to him as possible to scare him/show him up. There just wasn't time. More likely he was following the car in front of him and saw Ward at the last second, tried to swerve to miss him or even as a reflex, and clipped him with the rear tire. The timeline just doesn't add up for it to be anything other than a tragic accident.

I just looked at it one more time. Ward first started to dart down the track at 33 seconds. He was hit at 36 seconds. In 3 seconds Stewart was able to tell that he was going to dart down the track, formulated a plan to show him up or scare him and then hit him? He didn't even get out from behind his car until the 29 second mark and didn't clear the front of it until the 31 second mark. I just don't see how Stewart had time to see him, get ticked off and decide to show him up in 4-5 seconds when he was following another car. It just doesn't add up.
