Should Highlands consider retiring coach Mueller's high school jersey(number)? I think Mr. Marty Moore has the only retired jersey as of now.

 

I believe one of the Burt brothers number was retired as well.

Hell of a coach. Always loved seeing/reading Coach Mueller's preseason or playoff interviews. He certainly had a passion for his players and the program. As someone with no interest in Highlands other than respect for high school football it's sad to see him step down but I'm glad he could do it the way he wanted after telling his family he would last December.

 

Congrats to Coach Mueller and his players over the years in being part of an amazing career and a magnificent era in Kentucky High School Football.

From a former Colonel, I wish you nothing but the best in retirement, it is well deserved. Respect is earned, not given and I'm certain that even the most ardent Colonel fans would say you've earned their respect. Congrats on a great career !

I thought that after the Collins loss to SK, Collins coach said "we need to do what Highlands does", if not for the coaches adjustments, there's a good chance that Collins is state runner up again. Not only did coach Mueller make Highlands a better program, he also showed other teams what it takes to be a state champion and therefore made the competion better and KY football better. Coach Mueller is a legacy and will surely be missed on the sidelines. Thanks coach, for everything, including the sacrificing of your personal time from your family, to prepare other kids to be better players and teaching them about life after football. Your sacrifices will NEVER be forgotten!!

Coach Mueller should write a book about success. I'll bet there are 200+ coaches in the Commonwealth that would read it.

Wow! Being a Cov Cath fan I never saw this coming. I assumed Dale Mueller would be at the helm for 20 more years.

It's a wonderful thing for a man to be able to look back on a 20 year career with such success and say, it's time to move on with another page in my life. Congratulations on a wonderful career, you made NKY football better!

The gold standard has been set in high school football.

Coach Mueller should write a book about success. I'll bet there are 200+ coaches in the Commonwealth that would read it.

 

I really don't care to read another book by an athlete or coach about how to be successful; however, I think 2 really interesting books that Dale could write would be:

 

- A book of stories about his life in football. We all know his big moments, but what about the out of the headline momements that were memorable for him. Dale, as are many coaches, is a really good story teller.

 

- Also I always think it is easy for any person to write about their successes, I am always interested in a person telling their stories about the moments they wish they had over and what they would do differently. For most people it is far too personal and maybe painful, but I do think it would be interesting.

Channel 12 in Cinci just did a very nice special on Coach Mueller. Probably a 4-5 minute segment.

Sad to hear about his retirement, however he continues to show that he was not only a great coach but a great person. He did something that he loved for all these years, and now he is getting to spend more time with the people he love in his family. The man is one of the, if not the best coach in Ky history. Congrats to you Coach Mueller!

The timing of this annoucement is just another classic move by Coach Mueller.

 

He could have annouced this before the season began - but he wanted it to be about the kids, not the Dale Mueller fairwell tour.

 

He could have waited several weeks and let the masses continue to rehash the state final game. Instead he makes the annoucement just 2 days after the loss and diverts a lot of attention away from the loss.

 

I have a sneaking suspicion that if the Bluebirds would have won the game, he would have waited a few weeks to allow the boys a chance to bask in the glory.

His victories off the field will forever transcend the ones one the field.

Does anyone know if the HHS players knew about Mueller's decision to step down before Monday? I didn't know whether this was something that was already known internally within the program.

 

What a coaching career Dale Mueller has had! I only wish that he had been able to finish his career with a win, but as the saying goes, you can't win them all.
