Do The Beechwood Tigers Need a Change?

Featured Replies

Beechwood never seemed to buy into the throwing aspect of the spread. I say let this Sophomore class pass through w their talented aerial game and then decide. Turf changed the face of HS football, maybe this is the class to revamp Beechwood's philosophy towards it.

Beechwood is going to do what a winning program always does. They're going to use all this negative nonsense fuel their fire in the weight room. Then track season comes along and they're going to get quicker, faster, and more explosive just in time for Spring Ball and 7 on 7. Another few months of lifting then its 2 A Days all over again with a legit shot at Bowling Green. Thats every year folks! Not once in a blue moon! What other local teams can say that?

Since clearly this whole thread has gone crazy and my thoughts have been misrepresented and misstated (perhaps even by me), I wanted to summarize this thread, my thoughts and beliefs.

1. Someone else started a thread about a "Coaching Change" - NOT ME

2. Someone else called for a firing of coaches - NOT ME

What got me involved in this thread was someone referring to the BW Staff as the "Most Talented in NKY" and others following that with "Top Notch". Interpretation and the accuracy of them is a matter of opinion. Arguing and debating that "Opinion" is the foundation of BGP. Perhaps in a nasty sarcastic way, I attempted to get someone to defend these statements with real evidence. No one did and I kept pushing. I would still like an answer. Preferably without trying to diminish the accomplishments of previous staffs while trying to defend Coach Rash and his staff.

You can a disagree with me for sure and I could be wrong, but IMO there are things that could be changed that would greatly improve the results. I stand by my statement that to be considered a "Great Coaching staff" you have to "Win with Less." Some of that is development, some of that is motivating certain players beyond their abilities. No matter how you do it, you have to win games that on paper you shouldn't. A former boss of mine used to say "You have to achieve beyond the expectations..." I use to laugh and call it motivational speaking for salesmen or marketing jargon, but I now see where it applies to so many areas of life and definitely believe it applies to sports.

I truly believe that BW "Underachieved" this year. I have thought that for many seasons. You can make excuses about injuries, not having the talent and running into a Goliath opponent, but those are just that, excuses! I also feel that the underachieving is avoidable. If I didn't, I wouldn't bother posting. You can call it "Axe Grinding" or "Sour Grapes", but it just isn't. It was my opinion long before I had a vested interest in it.

To end my part in this, I want this to be clear:

I NEVER stated that ANYONE should be fired. Because I responded to posts in a thread entitled "Do the Tigers Need a Change", all the defenders jumped on me and assumed that's what I was saying. My whole "Change" is about approach and actions.

I DO NOT question or criticize anyone's work ethic or the amount of work they put into the program. I know the time involved and would be foolish to do so when its obvious to everyone that's there is a great deal of work put into the program by all involved.

I DO NOT question Coach Rash's dedication to the program, the school or to the kids. Clearly, he and his family are all-in. Julie is a valuable asset to the school and the kids in areas far more important than football.

I DO NOT question whether or not he or his staff cared about the kids. While I do question some of his actions and statements, it would be pretty arrogant of me to pretend that I know what's their heads. Despite how it may appear, I'm just not that egotistical. Coach Rash has done some very postive things for my kids outside of Football so I have gotten a glimpse of "what's in his heart".

If any of these statements appear untrue in my comments in this thread, I can assure you that it is due to my poor writing ability, emotion or a failed attempt at sarcasm. I am telling you clearly that these are my true feelings.

The program has been and obviously still is a "Top Program" in the state. When and how it got there as well as how it remains there is a matter of opinion, but no negative threads or coach criticism will change the fact that it is. The Tigers will be Tigers and will hit the weight room soon to begin to prepare for the next season. As I stated early on, the Tigers will get their 12th Title. Maybe next year, maybe the year after, but no matter when it is, I am certain that the entire Beechwood Community will celebrate. ...and then quickly begin to plan and work for number 13.

Old Sports Dad, the kids I am talking about are Craig Wilmhoff, Joey Johnson, Gabbard and there are several others. Yes you are right Coach Rash and Coach Myerhof both are great Erlanger men and yes we do stand behind each other. As goford said it all they are a good bunch of coaches and believe I applaud you for your 50 plus years with Beechwood a true fan. I respect each and everyone of those coaches no matter what complaints people may have about them. I bet there are another 100 programs out there that would love to have done what Beechwood has done for the past 8 years then others are just spoiled. JD

Coach Rash himself says, "it's not about the X's and O's, it's the Jimmy's and Joe's. I have better Jimmy's and Joe's than most people". I put that in quotes because I have heard it from his own mouth. Now that would support the argument that gage reason they are not winning titles is that Mayfield and this year, Frankfort, were just better than them.

Yes, they do gave a whole slew of coaches who put in extraordinary amounts of time and they do know more X's and O's than most other staffs. A lot of that has to do with continuity over the years. They all know what is expected week in and week out and from year to year. So Rash downplays his staff a little as he tries to give the credit to his players. I get that.

Now, I will also tell you, I don't like Beechwood, just like I don't like Highlands, for the same reason. That is, I'm jealous of the success they have. Albeit, from their tradition, work ethic or having out of district athletes who claim it's for the education.

Who has Beechwood beaten lately that they shouldn't have? Where is the big upset?

I guess they are still searching?

The program has been slipping as I have said for years and for the cries of denial I find it funny. I like Noel, but if he doesn't look at every aspect of his program and make changes, then the slide will continue. Those "great Freshman" are now upper classmen football wise, because their Sophomore season is over. Who has Beechwood beaten lately that they shouldn't have? Where is the big upset? Who are the bigger schools that they are knocking off? In 2012, they lost to Holmes. No way that should have occurred. The next step will be a positive or a negative one. Either Beechwood can get back to being a football power in Kentucky or they can't. The decisions IMO are with Rash to thoroughly analyze his entire program. To do nothing would be to ignore the facts. Beechwood has the building, the weight room, support from the community and a storied past. The railroads used to be the main vehicle for transporting goods once upon a time too.

The program is slipping the same way Cov Cath is slipping - they have a rival they have been unable to beat the past few years. The 2011 team was one of the best ever at Beechwood. They just didn't get the job done against Mayfield. This Frankfort loss is the first 1A playoff loss under Rash to a team other than Mayfield. The year before Rash took over, Beechwood lost in the second round of the playoffs.

You often use that line - who have they beaten that they shouldn't have. So are you asking when was the last time they had an upset win? It is tough when you are usually the favorite. In the past 5 years, Beechwood has beaten 4A-6A teams, they have beaten teams that went on to win state championships - none of those are upsets or good wins? Name some upsets from the past and give me an idea what point you are trying to make. I just am not sure what point you are trying to make with that comment.

Holmes 2012 also beat a Newport Catholic team that went on to win a state title. That was not a slouch that Beechwood lost to.

Beechwood analyzes the program every year. This team was very different on both sides of the ball in what they tried to do. Changes are happening to try and get another title. Everyone praises Frankfort for their scheduling and the focus on getting better by playing better opponents, Beechwood has done the same thing. There have been changes made during the season the past few years trying to get better during the season. The coaches are evaluating things every week and making changes to try and get better.

I do agree that next year is important. People overlook the fact that this team only had 5 seniors that started, and only one of those was a lineman. Young linemen don't just walk on the field and dominate. They had to replace their entire line on both sides of the ball from the previous year, except for one player. People don't realize how hard it is to do that. One of the best players in Beechwood history graduated. Every linebacker that played significantly in 2012 graduated or missed this season due to injury. This team lost their starting senior RB before the season even started. They lost their most experienced returning LB before the season even started. People need to get real and stop thinking this was a great team because their son played on it. This was a transition year. There is a lot coming back and they have a chance to be very good.

I have been a Beechwoodfan for many years.

I was a fan of Walz, Mariani, Barre, Yeagle, and now Rash.

Noel and his family have poured their hearts and souls into that school. He is a quality man and I am proud to say he coached my sons (who were not "studs").

Now that they are grown, they see him as a man who they love and respect and who was a strong, positive influence on them in high school.

It is a great program run by great men. We are very lucky to have people dedicated to our kids like this. A lot of the grumbling I read here seems very petty. Yeah, we haven't had a state championship in a few years. As someone who has experienced Beechwood as a child, a parent, and beyond, I can tell you, if this is all you have to complain about...GROW UP!

Great post Beechwoodfan! I am glad so many other people are speaking out on here.

Everyone, look back through this thread and tell me what you see. It is clear the vast majority see that this coaching staff is doing an excellent job coaching football players and caring deeply about how these young men develop on and off the field. Everyone is going to question a coach in any sport. That is the nature of sports. But the vast majority all know that Coach Rash and his staff are doing a great job and talk of change is just sports board fodder.

One more post - to respond to OldSportsDad's request about this coaching staff's accomplishments.

First, I am not going to include the accomplishments several of these coaches, including Coach Rash, had as part of the team and coaching during the Yeagle years. But don't forget, a big chunk of this staff was there coaching and contributing to those championships. I'll put that aside because I am sure you want to give 100% of credit for that to Yeagle.

Here is what this coaching staff has accomplished:

Two state championships. Honestly, that by itself should almost be enough to document the quality of the staff.

Coach Rash and his staff have never lost a 1A district football game.

Final four team in the playoffs every year under Rash before this season. Think about that and don't diminish it. There aren't many teams that can say they have been in the final four in their class every year from 2007-2012.

12 wins over big schools - class 4A-6A.

On your point about this team underachieving, I will disagree. The talent is young and the line of scrimmage players are all young.

I will reply paragraph by paragraph...yes they can't beat Mayfield, but now they didn't beat Frankfort. As you are so often fond of saying, when did that happen last?

Whom besides NCC have they beaten that won a state championship in the last five years? If the classes had been 4 instead of 6 would NCC have beaten the 1A champion? I don't know, but it is debatable.

Last year Holmes was also an early out in the 4A playoffs and did so well their coach was not asked to return.

I really don't have a problem with Beechwood's schedule. They always have a rigorous out of district schedule. I question what is gleaned from the games to improve the squad. You have to make adjustments to your personnel and who you are playing against during the game. Honestly, I think this is the weakness of the staff. I wonder about the approach of the coaches at halftime, and I am not talking about how they talk to the kids or anything like that. I am talking about first half analysis of their opponent and how they can exploit things in half #2. A quick example would be the NCC game this year. What coaching staff do you think made better adjustments? The head man for NCC is in his 1st year as a head coach. Yes he has been there as a coach on the staff for a while, but so have Beechwood's coaches and you seem to believe that is a plus.

We seem to agree on next year being important, but we always do. 2011 they had a bunch of Seniors and lost the heartbreaker. Last year one of the best players out of the program graduated. This years Sophomore class was supposed to be awesome and roll. Perhaps too much hype out of the folks in Ft. Mitchell. I never said this was a great team. Others did. I never have had a son play for Beechwood, but have seen many a game at Edgar McNabb field and for the Tigers on the road. I have been saying the program is slipping for whatever reason. It has been. I want the Tigers to return to prominence.

I've been saying that since 2008 Beechwood has not had a win where they were a complete underdog. But I don't know if it's a lack of talent or the coaching staff. I'm not in the know.

Some weeks one has to look long and hard for something resembling an upset. My main complaint about six-class football is that the results are so predictable. Every week the Enquirer prognosticators go chalk and every week they're correct.

The Beechie faithful need to relax. You can't win a championship every year. You had your run. Now give someone else a chance..lol

History ... Beechwood also beat Holy Cross in 2011, the year that Holy Cross won the title. In fact, I believe Beechwood put a running clock on Holy Cross that year.

VOR,

could you give us the scores records vs Cov Cath and NCC Coach Rash and if possible back to the 2000s Yeagle years?

IMO they should be able to play even with NCC and competitive losses with Cov Cath would be acceptable.

I'll try and put it together for you. But off the top of my head, I believe Rash is right at .500 versus New Cath. Rash only has one win, maybe two over Cov Cath. Yeagle is probably a win or two better against both those teams in his last 6 or 7 years.
