Time to revist the preseason SOS Myth.

Featured Replies

SK was heavily criticised early in the season for the lack of 6A teams on their pre district schedule. Guru and Ram in particular were adament. One poster even commented that "SK consistently fails to challenge themselves.".

Let us revisit a portion of SK's schedule and see where those teams are now. I see that Danville has made it to third round in 2A and New Cath is a heavy favorite to join them there. Of coarse Beechwood is through to the third round and they are still playing. Hmmmm......

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many of Cov Caths and Highlands opponents are still alive after two rounds? Four out of 6 of SK's regular season opponents are still alive after 2 rounds (New Cath pending tonight).

Campbell, Ryle, Dixie and Boone all had schedules that were considered to be tougher than SK. How did that work out for these programs?????????

A little misleading even though I agree with the SOS myth.

BW and NC then were not the BW and NC that we're seeing now.

In addition, at many levels and especially the small school level winning the first two games in this playoff system simply isn't that hard.

SK should not be banged because BW was hurt and NC was still learning about their new team but they weren't strong at the beginning of the year.

If you are coming off a 2-9 year , do you really want to play Cov Cath, Higlands or Scott Co out of the gate? If you are not returning a lot of starters in a public program it is week 4 before you start executing well.

So you are saying that BW played a light schedule early. I agree.

SK proved the haters wrong looks like they are a top 10 6A team now! :D

When we were losing 7 games in a row, and still looking at playing Highlands, our tough schedule could have destroyed us. Now, I think it has really helped us (Mason County). We are in the region finals for the first time since 2003 with a team that some thought would go 0-10. If you can survive and not let it destroy your confidence, a tough schedule can help you. Our kids/coaches believe it helped us alot.

Since you asked.

5 out of 6. KY - 1 in 3A, 2 in 4A, and 1 in 6A. OH - 1 in Division 1

Did SOS play a factor in Boyle handing Russell County their first loss, 14-6 last night?

Maybe.

I think so. And a tougher schedule may have helped Russell County.

The question is what is the goal of your program? If your goal is to win state titles then you play a tough competition, find your weaknesses, fix them, get better, play better competition, find your weaknesses, fix them, get better, and repeat this over and over again.

If your goal is to win enough games to keep people happy. You play a soft schedule and bow out of the playoffs each year with a loss when facing the best competition.

SK is a perfect example. Won six straight against teams they should beat. Played a tough district schedule and Scott County. Lost 3 games and found their weaknesses. Fixed those weaknesses and got better. Now playing in the 3rd round because of the tough schedule they played the past 6 games.

I echo sml007 and Clyde.

The Scott County victory over Simon showed us all where Simon is at.

And somebody not named T or X would do better? I don't think so. SK did not lose to SC because of scheduling, they lost because SC just had too many skilled athletes. No body in our district , or the Lexington district would do any better!

It really is as simple as this. If you want to find out how good you are, find out where your weaknesses might be and try to be the best you can be, you play a tough schedule. Playing easier teams does little to make you better and may even hurt you by giving you a false sense of how good your players are.

If I am comparing two teams and wondering who will win a game, I will choose the 4 loss team with a much tougher schedule over the one loss team with a weak schedule and be right at least 80% of the time.

I agree that a tougher schedule helps when the playoffs come.

Sometime though a schedule is made not realizing how good a team may be later, then a really good team develops and don't have the competition to challenge them.

You're in the 3rd round because you've played bad teams. As much as I wish 6A could get back to being good, it's just not! A lot of people hope camp co is on the right path, but they aren't there yet. See Campbell/Cov cath game. They were the best of a group of bad teams and you finally beat them.

Playing good teams helps you to prepare for SC. Seems like you're okay conceding to them and saying it was a great year. Why not play the schedule that prepares you to play with them. AND MAYBE BEAT THEM! You are saying your schedule didn't matter, look at cha now! We're saying a tougher schedule year after year puts you in a position to play with them! Don't be trophy hunters...and that means playing a schedule that makes your record look good.

I don't care where your opponents end up as long as you keep playing 1 and 2A schools. And two of the ones you mentioned we're walking wounded at the time and you barely beat them. Then you want to bring up HHS and Cov cath as comparison. Not even close. They are playing teams 4a or above. Maybe there is a reason the teams they are playing don't have good records. Maybe it's because the teams don't play a scheduled loaded with small schools and horrible 6a schools.

SK plays a schedule to satisfy you and UK Fan. Just like the Bengals. Win enough to keep the people happy and have no desire to really TRY to take it to the next level. But at least the bengals have to do it against teams on their own level. They can't schedule college teams, or I'd say SK and the bengals would be even more similar.

And quit saying no one other than than T and X can play with SC. That might be true for 6A (which is very sad). HHS spanked SC and Bowling Green beat X. So there's 2 teams that can play with/beat them. I could name some others.
