SOS only helps if your program if it is in a position to compete. Did scheduling Colerain and Highlands help Ryle? Did Boone scheduling all those JC schools and Cov. Cath help them get better? No. Over scheduling led to demoralization and eroded fan support in both programs.

Broaden your horizons...you make examples out of one year for two teams. We can give you multiple examples of where it pays off. (see Mason co., and all the Louisville schools) It may not pay off this year, but down the road! You are looking year to year. Look at your program!

 

Hate to go back to my AAU experience with my team...but I think it will help you. In the 3rd grade, I started an AAU team. We played the toughest schedule we could find. I started with 10 girls. Our first two years, we took a beating!! I can remember one game that the team beat us 54-4. We scored all our points in the last minute of the game and 2 of the points were free throws. We had several experiences like that. We continued to play the toughest competition and playing "up" in leagues to challenge our girls. (yes, girls). We always had very average records in tournaments and leagues. For our first 2-4 years together, I'm not sure if we ever won a tournament. Our GIRLS didn't lose confidence, they remained hungry. They wanted to get to the level they had been exposed to. As 7th graders that team finished second in the AAU D1 state championship. And last year, the team that be us by 50 4 years ago...we beat by 20 in a tournament. We finished our 8th grade with 6 of the original 10 that we started with 4 years ago. The only ones we lost were the ones that chose other sports to pursue as they got older. We didn't have to revamp our team every year because they lost confidence. They learned how to get better and they worked harder because they wanted to be at the top. If I would have been concerned about their confidence, they would still be very average. As it turns out, as Freshman, they will all be contriuting to their JV programs and some will be varsity only, with some of them as possible starters on their teams! Good varsity teams!

You're going to continue to be mediocre as long as you continue to play a mediocre schedule. No matter how good the 1 and 2 A schools are on your schedule, they are not going to make you better. They just don't have the overall depth and size that it takes to make a 6A school better. They might have a couple athletes that are better than the best athelete you have, but they can't match the depth of athletes that SK should be producing. You say that kids transfer. You're right! But its not a team worth of kids! I think I read on here that HHS as 5 out of 100 kids from fresh to varsity. No idea what BW has. And secondly, why do they transfer? Because they want to go to a successful program. Look in the mirror if they are transferring away from your school and fix it.

And the title of your thread makes it sound like you were right. "look at us (SK) now, apparently SOS doesn't matter. we seemed to do okay". I say you didn't do crap and you are already conceding in the playoffs to the team you play this week. What did the strength of schedule have to do with anything. It didn't prepare you for any GOOD teams in the playoffs!

At the beginning of the year, SK was not a very good team. Coming off a 2-9 campaign, and with LOW confidence , playing a brutal schedule would have destroyed confidence. The poster children for brutal scheduling without having the team to compete are Boone and Ryle.

 

I disagree with the assertion that lower class teams are inferior opponents. Acceptance of open enrollment and transfer athletes levels the playing field, especially when you consider that those players are originally from those higher class schools.

 

If the point of preseason scheduling is to prepare you for the playoff season, by continuing to argue SK's pre season schedule was flawed is disputing the results on the field. Results on the field trump the opinions of a collection of arm chair quarterbacks!

I wasn't saying SK's pre season was flawed and had nothing to do with playing lower class. In this area this year the lower classes had better teams than 6A schools in the area so SK playing lower class teams is what they need to do most years out of district schedule. You're right.

The question is what is the goal of your program? If your goal is to win state titles then you play a tough competition, find your weaknesses, fix them, get better, play better competition, find your weaknesses, fix them, get better, and repeat this over and over again.

 

If your goal is to win enough games to keep people happy. You play a soft schedule and bow out of the playoffs each year with a loss when facing the best competition.

 

SK is a perfect example. Won six straight against teams they should beat. Played a tough district schedule and Scott County. Lost 3 games and found their weaknesses. Fixed those weaknesses and got better. Now playing in the 3rd round because of the tough schedule they played the past 6 games.

They transfer because of largely selfish interests. Easy paths to 1A championships. Why stick around SK and grind it out when you can bail and go into a 1A playoff where there is no competition until the state semifinals. There are also those that bash our coaching like the selfish juveniles they are.

And let me tell you one more thing, it is very tempting for me to use my son to recruit Boone athletes like Beechwood uses their kids to recruit ours. But I have too much respect for the folks at Boone to do that and in the end, my character and integrity are more important to me than winning state championships.

So if it's that easy and so attractive, why isn't Beechwood the biggest state in the school!!! Just like HHS, I bet the kids that transfer to Beechwood for education is 5 times the amount of kids that transfer for sports.

 

And you're naive if you think they are transferring for state championships! Maybe its the overall program plus the education. Beechwood only has 11 state championships in their entire existance. So a lot of kids went through there without getting a ring!

Why in the heck would you attend SK in the first place! I lived in Independence went to SK in the lean years and got out of Dodge! My kids are getting a quality education, enjoy playing athletics and certainly don't hang there hat on a 1981 state basketball championship! Most of the old guard has to be ashamed of the parents of today's SK students or future students. I always wanted to see the program do well but a few are creating a bunch of haters.
