The question is what is the goal of your program? If your goal is to win state titles then you play a tough competition, find your weaknesses, fix them, get better, play better competition, find your weaknesses, fix them, get better, and repeat this over and over again.

 

If your goal is to win enough games to keep people happy. You play a soft schedule and bow out of the playoffs each year with a loss when facing the best competition.

 

SK is a perfect example. Won six straight against teams they should beat. Played a tough district schedule and Scott County. Lost 3 games and found their weaknesses. Fixed those weaknesses and got better. Now playing in the 3rd round because of the tough schedule they played the past 6 games.

When we were losing 7 games in a row, and still looking at playing Highlands, our tough schedule could have destroyed us. Now, I think it has really helped us (Mason County). We are in the region finals for the first time since 2003 with a team that some thought would go 0-10. If you can survive and not let it destroy your confidence, a tough schedule can help you. Our kids/coaches believe it helped us alot.

 

Losing does not breed confidence. Lose enough, and you go on the field EXPECTING to lose, and looking forward to end of the season. If I have the roster of T or X, sure I schedule up the gazoo. If I have a junior QB who was under constant pressure the year before, with no running game in support. coming off of a 72-0 whooping by T, I wouldn't schedule aggressively. This QB's confidence would have been completely crushed.

 

Furthermore, although PPride has joined the criticism in this thread, he quickly ignores his own assertion that enrollment and football success are not that closely related. New Cath, Beechwood and Danville would all be competitive, if not favored over 2/3 of the teams in 6A.

 

SK success in the first two rounds of the playoffs comes from the realization that the QB did not develop enough to continue to run a spread offense, throwing the ball 30+ times per game. Since adjusting to a power running team, with substantial success , the qb and the receivers are more relaxed and making a lot more plays, eliminating drops.

Can someone explain to me why everyone is assuming SK deliberately went looking for 1A and 2A schools to fill their schedule? 2 years ago they had 3 games to fill because Scott, Conner and Cooper did not want to continue games with them foe whatever reason. When you have to fill 1/3 of your schedule you take whomever will play you. The beginning of the year Death Valley Bowl in Lincoln Co. required a 2 year commitment and there was absolutely no way SK had any control over participants/opponents. To my knowledge they didn't pick their opponent in the Cross Town Shootout. NCC has been on the schedule for at least 4 years. When you're limited time wise to fill your schedule, you play whoever can play you i.e. Pulaski Co, Iron ton etc.

In addition, at many levels and especially the small school level winning the first two games in this playoff system simply isn't that hard.

 

SK should not be banged because BW was hurt and NC was still learning about their new team but they weren't strong at the beginning of the year.

I think in all the classes the first 2 rounds of the playoffs are easy and if they're not chances your team isn't very good.

Absolutely not. Ryle, Boone and Dixie were all inferior to New Cath and Beechwood. SK lost by a point on a 2 point conversion to Campbell in the last 30 seconds and took Dixie too lightly.

No it did not. It had everything to do with developing the confidence of a quarterback. SK could always run the ball and have proven so against playoff competition, they at times chose not to.

So they chose to lose to Campbell in the regular season due to the inability to run the ball (ie. Time of possession and leaving the defense on the field)? They could have run it, they just chose not to?
