Time to revist the preseason SOS Myth.

Obviously, you have never been to southern Kenton County.

I have! Now you are comparing so. Kenton to their entire co. Did you not read the post about population in each county???? Kenton's population is triple that of Scott county!!

As if you have personal responsibility for Highlands success!

huh???? thought we were talking about SK and SC. Where did I say anything about HHS in that post? I'm talking football in KY and telling you why SK needs to quit making excuses not to play for the entire season. Quit throwing you hands up from the beginning of every season and saying you only have a chance to make it so far. Do something about it if you're really serious. Don't make excuses why you can't win, go out and win. The way you think, I can just see your coaches on the first day of practice. "Okay boys, let's lay out some goals for the season" Little Johnny writes down "lets win state". All the coaches falling down laughing and saying "johnny, you're so cute! What a great dream, but that will never happen. We just want to try and have a decent record against our district and see what happens from there." That's the attitude you portray with all your post. Poor little SK doesn't have a chance. If they really cared about it that much, they would have a chance. Develop the kids and the talent you have and win. It may not happen tomorrow, but if you do some of the things people suggest on here, rather that over protecting the kids, making excuses and brainwashing everyone that the deck is stacked against you so why try, then you could get better.

SK was heavily criticised early in the season for the lack of 6A teams on their pre district schedule. Guru and Ram in particular were adament. One poster even commented that "SK consistently fails to challenge themselves.".

Let us revisit a portion of SK's schedule and see where those teams are now. I see that Danville has made it to third round in 2A and New Cath is a heavy favorite to join them there. Of coarse Beechwood is through to the third round and they are still playing. Hmmmm......

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many of Cov Caths and Highlands opponents are still alive after two rounds? Four out of 6 of SK's regular season opponents are still alive after 2 rounds (New Cath pending tonight).

Campbell, Ryle, Dixie and Boone all had schedules that were considered to be tougher than SK. How did that work out for these programs?????????

You are correct. Saying SOS prepares a team better for the playoffs is only true if you have a good team to begin with. Out of the teams you mentioned at the end of your post, only 1 of those teams was actually a decent team and that is CC. The other teams you mentioned at the end Ryle, Dixie and Boone were all pretty bad teams this year and because they were all in 6A shows how bad 6A in NKY was this year. SK can't help that they had to play those teams because they were in their district.

You cold schedule all the tough teams in the state if you like but if you aren't very good in the first place it won't help you at all except to get a good look at your opponnents JV team by halftime. Look at some of the teams that had so called "tough" schedules and see where they ended up. Ryle, out...Holy Cross, out etc. youu can have the toughest schedule out there but if you aren't any good what does it matter?

At the beginning of the year, SK was not a very good team. Coming off a 2-9 campaign, and with LOW confidence , playing a brutal schedule would have destroyed confidence. The poster children for brutal scheduling without having the team to compete are Boone and Ryle.

I disagree with the assertion that lower class teams are inferior opponents. Acceptance of open enrollment and transfer athletes levels the playing field, especially when you consider that those players are originally from those higher class schools.

If the point of preseason scheduling is to prepare you for the playoff season, by continuing to argue SK's pre season schedule was flawed is disputing the results on the field. Results on the field trump the opinions of a collection of arm chair quarterbacks!

What results are you talking about?? Beating a bunch of bad teams?? 2-9 last year really doesn't mean anything. Your kids get a year older every year and all schools have turnover in their program. If kids in one program are young and get experience (even if they were 2-9) and other schools graduate kids, it's very easy to turn things around locally. Dixie wasn't very good this year, but I look for them to be much better next year. They will lose some players, but the experience the younger players got this year will translate to wins next year. I'll even give you that Beechwood and NCC would be decent opponents for some schools in a normal year. But when SK played both of them, they weren't very good. I would bet that ALL of their fans would agree. And they were battling key injuries! I know you can't help that and foresee the future. But I'm not sure what "results" you're gloating about. If SK and NCC played right now, I'd take NCC by 3 touchdowns.

Again, not saying you need to play Trinity or the GCL every week, but play teams that do push the confidence level a little every once in awhile. Maybe one or two games! Create something for the kids to work towards! They are "settling". We are talking football, not dance class. You earn respect and gain confidence by playing better teams. You don't have to win to gain confidence. Confidence can also come by winning small battles against better teams. You can gain confidence week by week. In fact, if you are trying to gain confidence by playing teams that you KNOW you will be competitive with or even beat, then that is a false confidence. You can see that by the result of the SC game.

As for Boone and Ryle, yes they had a down year this year. However, that's not their history. It's one year. I would ask them "Was their confidence blown or did it make the returning kids more hungry?" Because we're talking about football, I get I know the answer!

side note 6 of the 8 remaining teams in 6A are from Jefferson Co.

Yeah, it made Ryle so hungry they canceled their series with Highlands and I know the answer at Boone, and it not the answer you think it is. I have been inside Boone's program and I know exactly where they are!

Can't tell you why they cancelled HHS. Apparently, several different perceptions as to why if you read other posts. Just because they take HHS off the schedule doesn't mean they won't play games that challenge them and push them. Never said it had to be HHS. You choose to take little things out of the responses and answer them and most have no impact on what we are talking about. Not talking about Ryle and Boone. We are talking about how to make teams more competitive. You want to claim unfairness of Scott Co., when in reality, theres not much different and there are very valid reasons they have one school. Makes complete sense in the area they are in. You haven't addressed hardly any of the facts that we have put out there. Number of students not really being overwhelming different. (in your words not that far off) and the fact that Scott Co's population is a 1/3 of Kenton Co. and the fact that you say they don't have another school within 20 miles, well that's because down there, there are miles between you and your neighbor!! Again, you can't compare the two areas. Let's say they split the school, then they go to 2 4A schools. Are you just trying to eliminate your competition rather than trying to get better to beat them?

Of course they are...

Wonder why??? Don't have time to look at their schedules, but I bet they are all fairly strong and prepare them for playoffs!!

Of course they are...

So I did look this up quickly. Besides SK, not one of the 8 left played any team under 4A. HHS was one of those teams they played and no team played more than 2 4A teams in their season. All the other games on all their schedules were 6A teams.

Jefferson County schools are almost all urban high schools with, shall we say, more diverse student populations than the "White Flight" suburbs we have in NKy. It would be more appropriate to compare Jefferson Co schools with schools inside the 275 loop of Cincinnati.

^ Which would also lend to the fact that SOS helps come playoff time....

SOS only helps if your program if it is in a position to compete. Did scheduling Colerain and Highlands help Ryle? Did Boone scheduling all those JC schools and Cov. Cath help them get better? No. Over scheduling led to demoralization and eroded fan support in both programs.

SK has overachieved this year by improving while cultivating confidence.

Or Holmes. Diversity doesn't make your program good. Please don't go there! It's Louisville. Not Greater Cincinnati! There are only 2 teams from that area that can even compete with the top half of the teams in Cincy. Again, not a great comparison. AND most would tell you that inner city (where your diversity is at the highest) is not a place where programs thrive. Kids don't care and no support from the community. SK has more diversity than HHS, Beechwood and NCC. Again, more excuses for poor SK.
