Again, Highlands will share with Tom Gamble when they want to share with Tom Gamble. They will say when they want to play and when they do Tom Gamble will more then likely bow to them because he knows of the storied History, he knows they would be the top draw, he knows that a Highlands vs Moeller or other GCL team is a sellout.

It drives him nuts that he cant have what he wants and that is what makes him want them more.

Im not knocking HHS in anyway. If HHS is happy being a power in NKY and most years a state power then thats fine with me. HHS has the chance to become nationally known if they would play better teams. It is a fact they did duck playing a better team last year, not being mean just a fact. HHS fans will trash talk NKY teams that dont want to play them but they wont step up and play many schools that might be bigger and better than the Birds. I would love to see HHS play powerhouse teams cause they are the only school in NKY that has a chance to. No matter what happens in those games 90 times out of 100 they will still walk all over their district. Games and role to state. Why not try to compete with better schools?

I know some dont want to hear this again, but HHS is a small school. They dont have the depth to play big time schools week in and week out. A few key injuries on a HHS team is much more devastating to them than a school that has backups that could start for almost any team they play. Fact is HHS would get beat up playing a schedule like that. Kinda like Boise St. Put them in the SEC and they would be average because they couldn't hold up to the grind every week. But give them opportunities to play those powerhouses fresh and they can play with anyone.

Mainly, you get to put the kids in a playoff like atmosphere in week 1 to see how they stack up against a big-time opponent on a big time stage. It would be a real good possibility that if Highlands were involved, they may even get a shot at getting their program on National television and ESPN has selected the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown as part of their Opening Weekend High School Football kickoff series for the past two years and again this year.

 

The kids would get to dress, prepare and play at Nippert Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati against a regional named power NOT from KY. Also, they would get a good-sized gate, I believe, and it would be worth their while to try it once.

Good points, but I'm sure the HHS staff understands all those things and they still chose not to play in it. Those would be the pros, but my guess is their cons outweigh the pros or they would be playing in it. Dale knows what he's doing and we will trust his opinion more than outsiders on a message board.

College fields, even small places like Nippert, still lose the true high school feel.

Tom is your typical radio guy: overweight, out of shape, and nasty looking. However, he was talented on the radio. He was paired with Richard Skinner and they were called the Two Angry Guys. They had a pretty good gig going on, Skinner was more of the facts guy and Gamble was the blow hard but Gamble was good at his trade. However, like typical shock jocks, Gamble burned a lot of bridges and and frankly spewed out a lot of inaccurate crap that was designed to get ratings and nothing more. In short, Gamble never let the facts stand in the way of a good story.

 

I will need some help here but I think Gamble married into money, he went on to do the promotions, and he worked at a hard rock station as a morning DJ for sometime and then left. I don't know if him leaving was his decision or the radio stations decision.

 

I think Gamble is smart doing what he is doing with the Showdown but I think most of the schools are stupid for giving up home games and allowing Gamble promotions to charge double for admission so they can take the profits.

^ I remember that show. I think it was on an FM station that was all talk-radio at one time & the station fizzled.

I would be the last person and I can not believe want I am about to say, but I agree about Highlands not playing in the thing.

Playing $10.0 or $12.00 dollars to see CovCath play Campbell at Dixie, plus giving up a home date, is just stupid.

Unless you are going to have special matchups and playing at UC or Paul Brown the Crosstown is a waste of time and money.

I'm guessing this was tough to post because you're a CovCath grad. But, I thought it was about as spot on and succinct as any post in the thread in regards to the Crosstown.

 

Only thing I differ one is how special it would be to play at Nippert (since PBS isn't in the picture for this event) at noon or 3:30 in potentially blistering heat, in front of a crowd that wouldn't fill most high school stadiums.

 

Need help from the Highlands insiders on this one. I always suspected it but now it is confirmed. During his online chat at Cincinnati.com, Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown creator and manager Tom Gamble flat out stated that Highlands has never been a part of the largest high school football showcase in the nation AND they have never expressed interest in doing so.

Actually if you look a little closer at the event history, you will never see Highlands. That is their choice not mine. I have tried to get them to play in the event on multiple occasions, but for whatever reason they choose not to be a part of the event

It's good enough for Colerain and the entire GCL? The event has expaned to include multiple "small" schools in Ohio which would be right up Highlands alley? They don't have any Harbin points to worry about collecting? :irked:

 

It's stuff like that that rubs people the wrong way when it comes to Highlands. This is an event that they should be a part of every, single year. There is simply no good reason not to be yet, Highlands appears to be "too good" to be involved.Can anyone provide some insight here?

Highlands fans have spoken on this one. I'll leave it at that. Highlands has already proven they can schedule Elder, Moeller, St. X, and Colerain without any help from Gamble, so why involve the middle man?

 

As far as the comment about "rubbing people the wrong way," I highly doubt the GCL schools, or powers to be at Colerain, worry much at all about what Highlands is doing. They have plenty on their plate. The only people this could rub the wrong way are people who either have way too much time on their hands, or someone who has a financial stake in the matter.

 

Personally, I think the Crosstown is a subpar effort at best. Too many schools, too many (mostly high school) locations, and too many match-ups that just aren't that good. Seems more driven by greed than good to me.

When he talked about it last that I can recall, they ended up ranked third in the country. Perhaps I'm a realist; others aren't. It's a very rare year that Highlands deserves being talked about as high in the national rankings. Most years we don't. I'm fine with being one of the top teams in the state. Only school in Ky and associated fans that has the credibility to call out Highlands for not playing more of a national schedule is Trinity in my opinion and I don't see it coming from those folks. As for Cardinal Fan, the way he goes on an on about Highlands, I'm beginning to think he is Gamble's son. I see a certain similarity.

Agreed. Perhahps someone can list the handful of times that Highlands has been nationally ranked by USA Today.

 

I'll bet it has only been maybe 4 or 5 times in 25 yrs. I say only and guys like Tom Gamble say "thats why we want Highlands to play in the Chili Bowl".

Would anyone care to research what Tommy did in High School and what Instrument he played in the band. Because it's true!!! A relation of mine went to Colerain high school with the "Loud Mouth" as he referred to, and has told me on numerous occasions what a tool bag he was then as well as now. This should explain pretty much whatever you need to know about the 1 angry shrimp.:lol: But then again, he is in Radio!!!!
