Why does Highlands refuse to be part of the Crosstown Showdown?

Featured Replies

Need help from the Highlands insiders on this one. I always suspected it but now it is confirmed. During his online chat at Cincinnati.com, Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown creator and manager Tom Gamble flat out stated that Highlands has never been a part of the largest high school football showcase in the nation AND they have never expressed interest in doing so.

Below is the question and answer

I notice no Highlands this year....I'm not a Highlands fan so I'm not trying to enflame, just wondering if they had no interest or scheduling conflict or what?

Tom Gamble's Response

Actually if you look a little closer at the event history, you will never see Highlands. That is their choice not mine. I have tried to get them to play in the event on multiple occasions, but for whatever reason they choose not to be a part of the event

What gives?

It's good enough for Colerain and the entire GCL? The event has expaned to include multiple "small" schools in Ohio which would be right up Highlands alley? They don't have any Harbin points to worry about collecting? :irked:

It's stuff like that that rubs people the wrong way when it comes to Highlands. This is an event that they should be a part of every, single year. There is simply no good reason not to be yet, Highlands appears to be "too good" to be involved.

Can anyone provide some insight here?

Thanks,

Why would Highlands, or any successful team for that matter, agree to join the Tom Gamble fundraiser each year?

I think the Birds are spot on.

Pretty good one Ru. I haven't asked Dale so I don't know his reasoning. As for me, I still hold a grudge against Gamble from his Two Angry Guys days and that would be enough of a reason if I was the head coach to not participate in the fundraiser.

I agree on that point too. I even confronted Gamble about it once in person, needless to say the battleship mouth was MIA in person.

I don't know the whole story here, but this made me laugh.

Would Highlands make less money playing in the Crosstown than the average home game?

Good one Sweep.

Gamble and Skinner went way over the lines of decency on their radio show regarding the Highlands football program. Their comments and voice imitations of a Highlands player were borderline racist to say the least. I told them what I thought of their crap too but never got a response. Highlands won't help Gamble make money off of high school football games.

I'm a bit clueless... Who is Gamble and why the negative opinions about him?

Well lets see, why would they play in it? So they can be like CCH/CC or Dixie/NCC game and play at Dixie. Pay $12 to get into the game? Yea!!! Gamble burned his bridge anyway. Would love to see what TFVH has to say about it.

Oh, another reason why people don't hate Highlands but rather comments like this from folks like yourself. Things have been slow on here lately, so I'm thinking you just may have gotten it going. Hahahaha! Enjoy!

One of my closest friends work with Gamble, and told me last season Highlands hands down said no way because they didnt want to play a GCL school to start off the season. Word is TG gets fired up at Highlands turning them down every year. Whatever the Birds have been doing for their program has been working amazingly, but if Dale wants thie National ranking he has talked about in the past he needs to step up and play as many power schools as possible. Who cares if they might lose a few games a year playing powerhouse football programs, because some seasonns they can beat those teams and will always be one on the nest teams in the state. I dont see how it could hurt Highlands in anyway. Is dale more worried about the perfect season and wins under his belt and spanking they same teams year after year, or will he step it up a notch in attempt to make HHS a national power, not only a state power. I think it would be awesome to see the Birds play some of the best teams from all over.

I would be the last person and I can not believe want I am about to say, but I agree about Highlands not playing in the thing.

Playing $10.0 or $12.00 dollars to see CovCath play Campbell at Dixie, plus giving up a home date, is just stupid.

Unless you are going to have special matchups and playing at UC or Paul Brown the Crosstown is a waste of time and money.

Hell just froze over.
