People get drunk and act like idiots. I hope they use videos to charge people with the crimes they committed.

According to Lexington Mayor on the 6pm news, they were in the process of reviewing video tape and will make every arrest possible for people who committed crimes. I hope that wasn't just lip service, they need to punish the guilty.

Is it true most of the damage was confined to State Street?

Any UK students caught on video breaking the law should be suspended from school.

I have to think that some of those "celebrating" were also critical of the IU fans acting the way they did when the Cats lost their first game of the year.

As a current UK student, this whole thing is completely embarrassing. Trust me, I enjoyed the win last night but never came close to doing anything like flipping a car over. The scene on University, where I live, was a lot different from State (for those who aren't familiar it's the next street over). My roommates and I had people over to tailgate and watch the game. We had about 50-60 people throughout the house and in the front yard during the game. After the game everyone on University went to the streets and cheered, but nothing was lit on fire (I don't have a problem with a couch or chair, but a car is just on another level). One of our buddies has DJ equipment and he set up on our front porch and played until about 12. It was a blast. People were dancing/celebrating in our yard/house all night. Probably my greatest night in college. The Riot Police were in the street and a few of us talked to them to make sure we were alright and they all said it was fine and to go have fun and celebrate, just don't try anything stupid.

 

What really is a shame is that hearing stories about State, some of the people who flipped the car don't even go to UK. It just puts a damper on all of this celebrating for the rest of BBN. Like I said, last night was the most fun I've ever had here at UK but it sucks people made us look bad for it. Rather than going home and talking about how great our Final 4 run was and how much fun we had at my family functions (I have a large family and I'm the only one who currently goes/went to school in KY) they'll already have seen this on the news and I'll be explaining that 98% of BBN isn't like this at all.

Looks like I lucked out not being able to go to State after the game. Roads were all blocked, so I just celebrated at my apartment complex with everyone. I'll be on University for the game Monday. As Capernicus said, my friends on that live on University said the scene was much better there.

Burning YOUR OWN couch that is probably bed bug infested to begin with -- who cares? THAT can be considered a tradition. Flipping over someone's car who you don't know is just not an intelligent thing to do. I was on State Street for a while last night. There were parts of the street that were very fun and very festive -- a DJ blaring music from a widow's watch of a house where about 300 people were just jamming and having a blast. There were parts of the street I walked by where I saw twenty guys lift up a car and flip it over. Things got out of control. That's why my friends and I headed to Capernicus's place and back to another buddy of mine's house to celebrate for the rest of the night.

 

On another note, who on EARTH parked their car on State Street? They had to know it was coming. It was the next logical step to cross into the threshold of the illogical, and I could've told you it was going to happen.

 

Here's to hoping it doesn't happen again.

I've seen this kind of behavior from sports fans of teams that have won, and those that have lost. Why do people act like that? Even if the stuff is your own...how is this a celebration?

It is worth mentioning again that the police Cape and his buddies talked to sound like they really have their act together. We all pick on the police when they appear not to have their act together so this is only fair.

There is no chance this happens. We're talking major jail time for the perpetrators.

 

I see tonight as being milder than Saturday. The in-state rivalry thing played into it a great deal, as well as loads of people coming from surrounding areas to pepper in their festive energy. Hopefully it's a FUN celebration -- not a dangerous one.

That doesn't answer the question...why burn stuff? For that matter, why destroy either your own property, or the property of others "celebrating". This is not a Kentucky thing...this is something that happens everywhere. I can't fathom any situation that calls for destruction as a component of celebration. Well...except a Greek wedding.

 

If I were someone who'd had my car flipped over, or had my property in any way damaged, I sure wouldn't be a happy camper. I wouldn't shrug it off as "tradition".

It DOES answer the question. Tradition drives it TODAY. No clue as to how it started. I do know that in 1984 when UD beat Georgetown in the S16 couches were burned in Dayton,OH.

 

THAT is why it was done Friday.
