I didnt' say they had the right to do it. I just answered the "why" question. I guess I'm not phrasing my question clearly. I wasn't asking specifically about what happened in Lexington. I was asking in the broader sense...regardless of "tradition"...what about burning or destroying one's own, or other's, possessions is celebratory?

But your point is well taken. Of course, there was about a 20-year period there where the only excuse UD students needed to burn a couch was that it was Friday. That culture definitely had its consequences: football tailgating was ultimately eliminated, the last homecoming celebration was in 2000 and just a couple years ago the students were allowed to be on campus during St. Patricks Day for the first time in a decade. For UK this is a major celebration and so the problem isn't as widespread and ingrained as it is at other places, but ultimately the administration hits back hard and that sort of thing begins to go away.

I agree though, tonight's was a joke.

LOL!!! They both have pics with the Police from Sat night but in a good way. Police were very good to them on University St. My kids said they had a great time and nothing got out of hand where they were. Now one block over on State St, another story.
