I think what is funny is Rock fans love to discuss how much talent X had, somehow dismissing the fact that they had some pretty good talent too. If you keep on saying it, and they do often, maybe it becomes believable. Trinity has had big time talent in individuals, good enough to play for not only the local colleges but the top ones in the country. They have a player good enough for Florida, good enough to play for Ohio State, Good enough to be Orange Bowl MVP and play in the NFL. UL and UK rosters are peppered with T and X players about even in numbers but most of the Trinity players play. Okay Smith, Baisch, Finch( when he's not hurt) , and Anderson played for X but what about McDermott, Tydlacka, Radcliff, Donnell, Kupper, Robey, Whiting, etc. I think Stein and Melillo at UK get in so at least say the big talent leans to the Trinity side. I am sure I am missing some others. BTW-Congrats to Ryan Tydlacka for being named National Punter of the week. Talent is one factor, coaching is another, but to say again that X has this landslide on the talent pool belittles the outstanding athletes that have represented the Rocks.

Why do you take a chance on sitting your senior and junior quarterbacks unless the kid can play. Now I have always disagreed with the risk of playing your backup QB in the JV game and with Cody Wolfe getting hurt last week, it almost caught the Rocks last Friday. It won't this week as Bishop can run, Quick can catch, and Wright can throw and run. My prediction-28-17 Rocks causing the Rocks fans to stay in their seats well into the 4th quarter for the first time in the regular season game since 2004. CR: Thanks for the update. I didn't do enough research but I stand corrected. I will comment that fewer St X grads will find the field than those mighty Rocks. And how you come in doesn't mean that you aren't a good player. Stein and Kupper have scholarships now. A couple of those kids have bounced around so thank you for keeping up with St X athletics. I can probably get you a really nice green and gold shirt if you want.....

More KY top 50 players, more talent overall, 2 and 3 dimensional offense, etc Fact is, Trinity has 15 division 1 players in College right now plus 3 more listed below plus the ones playing from Centre, (Spoelker, Grant, Saylor, ) St X had NO ONE play college ball last year off their championship team. Okay , no complete game in 2006, so did you win in 2005 regular season? 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009. It's been a long time since St Bernard's Brian Brohm played. So the regular season game means nothing to the 35K witnesses? Really?

Wouldn't that be the last 2 meetings or does regular season mean nothing? It has been a few years since Trinity has emerged in the regular season without a downpour. What has it been, 6 years since 35 to 40 thousand of my close personal friends have seen Trinity walk off Papa Johns the victor in the regular season?

Two points_ Can anyone show the love for previously undefeated Male? They aren't Cincy St X but still a pretty good team under new Coach Wolfe. I have heard Coach Redman being dogged for his coaching. Given just that fact, wouldn't a competent coach make Male better? Second, Coach Beatty is too good of coach to be worried about last year. Every dog has his day. Coach Glaser is currently Top Dog.

From my point of view after talking to the players and the officials and knowing Coach Specht's expertise, I think that Cincy St X will attack Trinity with pound the ball type offense to keep the T offense off the field. In Cincy St X's National championship year, Trinity turned it into a shootout from Stein to Dutton and actually led midway through the third quarter. In the 17-7 win down here, Trinity blitzed continually and made Luke Massa hurry all night. St X tried to throw and was unsuccessful. Last year was back to the " i am bigger than you and I will push you out of the way" type game. Trinity was limited due to injuries last year also so I would predict a ball control type game plan this year by the Bombers. How that translates to Lou St X is they do have more familiarity with handling the Rocks offensively than Cincy St X, however they are nowhere near in size and overall speed( except Hall) to Cincy St X. The game was 18-13 Cincy St X leading with 9 minutes remaining and Lou St X had the ball so the final score may be a bit deceiving. I would hope the Trinity team wins big and comes to Papa Johns full of confidence but I think that the 4th quarter gas tank may run out against Cincy St X after a brutal early schedule. Trinity played the brutal schedule last year and it takes a toll on a team.

Ox: I will try to post more but I have a lot more sites to monitor now. Going to South Bend to see the Irish on Saturday. Austin Collinsworth has been impressive. Congrats to the Baby Birds wherever they played in grade school. Remember with Highlands 19th win last year, some other teams motto became "Tradition Equaled". Again thanks to Highlands last year for keeping KY football at a high level. T and X couldn't get it done against Cincy St X and Elder but the 'Birds got it done.

Travis Wright is frm St Patrick and led the Celtics to an undefeated season and toy bowl championship. Perfect for the Trinity offense, good runner and good accurate arm.

I was onsite on the campus at Hoover High School on Thursday( June 17th) and saw their facilities. Very impressive for a mid major college, but it is a HIGH SCHOOL! Sport turf field and nice sized home stands, nice sized visitor side, probably holds 10K. Impressive maintenance building in the end zone that probably houses the 10 mowers needed for the complex. They have a double baseball field, imagine Ballard's field but there is another one I guess just for JV-freshman next to it. I Sorry I don't know anything about it

That is my feeling now. the super class would have 16 schools and everybody makes the playoffs and they are seeded 1-8 and higher seeds play at home first week. The super class gets 11 regular season games so they can schedule more at home or go play in the Herbstreit challenge or some other bowl game. I see X, Trinity, Male, Manual, Ballard, Eastern, Simon Kenton, Boone County, Ryle, Dixie Heights, Henry Clay, Highlands, Bowling Green, Scott County, plus 2 more out of Butler, Prp, Seneca, Oldham County, Dunbar, Lafayette, Marshall County, Meade County, Henderson County, the rest of 6A schools and or possibly Lex Catholic. That way, it would be great to see a Fern Creek vs Butler in a semifinal game with both teams with a 10-3 record with Male and X off their schedules and a chance to win the new 4A title.

I don't know about the 9th but the 6th and 7th is the upper half of the bracket determines 2 equal seeds. First round was district winner was home.

Tigers notch the 100th win in 4 years for Coach Jefferson. They also beat the now- a- junior pitcher, Mitch Wiley, that beat them as a freshman in the regional final 6-4 in 2008 with 3 pitches, a 65 mph fastball, a knuckleball and an eephus pitch. Senior night Tuesday and Trinity at Slugger Field on Wednesday.

Wow, you ran into the wrong ref. I have donated my time for years to Special Olympics and we concluded the State basketball tournament this past weekend in Louisville. Yes I was paid- in smiles and appreciation from the players, coaches and fans but no dollars. It is a very rewarding experience and nothing is more valuable than a Class 2 Special Olympics player hugging you after you place his/her medal around his/her neck at the end. Let me make this offer- I will officiate a Special Olympics basketball game next year with you and you can see that this profession is not about the money.

What are your opinions on this? The difference is the crowd. No one goes to watch a protology exam or a stirring arbitration hearing. It is basketball or football or whatever the sport-it is a spectator sport. And just like the players try to act like Lebron or Koby and the coaches act like Pitino and Calipari, the refs try to act like Burr and Hightower. Funny you never hear Gino Auriemma or John Wooden complaining about referees. Referees are there to provide a fair contest for all and penalize those who don't abide by the rules. Like doctors, insurance agents, and chemists, there may be some that get out of hand. But they do a thankless job for little or no pay, but love the game. But their few mistakes are right there for everyone to see. Give them a break- or invite them over to boo you in your job! Sorry for venting.

Just wanted to throw this in- what if one of the players was asked to go into the 2nd to last game and declined? I don't think "the player quit the team" is entirely accurate. I think the player quit on his team for whatever reason, right before senior night. That's not a coaching problem- IMVHO.

Not gone but the Spectrum is host to the St Francis Wyverns, which is the Old Male Location on Brook Street in Louisville. Missing some lights and run by the Salvation Army, it looks like it has housed a bunch of great games.

I would submit that the applicant must match the teaching openings on the school also. If the top 3 applicants are all math teachers but there aren't openings for teaching, then it can be a problem. Maybe the school system was waiting to see what teacher openings will come open in 2010. Just a thought-it is tough to mix and match certifications.

The February 1 signing day had 8 Tigers committing to colleges. 2 cross country and 6 soccer players. No football. Great coaching in 2009 and/or stacked junior class for the Tigers.

I had a game at Male last night to referee. They said that they already have 30 applicants and they will go through them and decide.

Does anyone know if Whitney Reed is gone for the season for Butler or just a while? Any details from Butler supporters- I thought she was a tremendous talent.

Here is my two cents worth from a Saint X point of view. 1) Play as many playoff games at home. This sounds simple but frankly T and X have dominated their district so if you go deeper into the playoffs, X and T carry the #1 seed so when region 2 plays region 4 or whatever, they get the home game 1/2 of the time guaranteed then many times the #2, 3, or 4 seed has advanced so they get to play at home due to the higher seed. 2) Play comparable teams or X and/or T in the regular season both at the varsity and JV/freshmen level. Most 6A teams have 3, maybe 4 district games maybe 2 rivalry games. Get the kids used to playing against the bullies on the block and maybe the second time around, SK is used to the speed, depth, etc on T and X. If you have a budget for football, throw some at the freshman/jv level to take a trip down south. With the public/private feud, both T and X have room on their schedules. If T and X are out of the question, there are 10 teams on the Ohio side that are comparable. 3) Learn tendencies of T and X. T was proud of the "playing fast" at the start of the games and overwhelm some opponents quickly including St X. St X has copied that and seemed to overwhelm SK early but SK outplayed them for 3 quarters. Getting in and out of huddles quickly, 2 minute offense to begin the game, punt team getting set quickly, etc are things that give T and X an early advantage. Learn that X throws outside and/or deep rather than crossing patterns. Know that Trinity has QBs that can scramble but usually scramble one way. Know that Trinity returns punts to their sideline side more times than not. Know that Trinity's d line love to switch gaps just before snap so have audibles to take advantage. 4) Special teams- this is where depth comes in handy. Both teams have had excellent kicking and punting specialists( Bironas, Tydlacka, Daughtery, Gray, etc) but usually have great coverage teams as well. That comes from playing football from the 3rd grade on and knowing how to stay in lanes plus having enough bodies for 22 starters and more on the special teams. Trinity does play their 1st team defensive starters more on kick and punt coverage and they probably have a highest percentage of fake punts in the commonwealth. Get somebody to put the ball into the end zone( see soccer teams for kickers) and eliminate the returns. 5) Bodies- Generally it starts in February of their 8th grade year where the weight rooms open up after they register for their high school. Coach Maddox at T will get them lifting along with whoever is Coach Martin's replacement at X. Notice how important that Coach Kelly thinks about the strength and conditioning position. Coach Maddox is a former head coach. You also need to know that my sons freshmen year, we had 124 players come out for the freshman team and they ended with 118. I think Trinity had 96 so there are alot of bodies to choose from. One all state lineman from Manual told me that X and T lineman hold all of the time because if they don't, they will bring in someone who will. We had 7 (Gold, green, white, red white blue black) strings freshman year and we played 10 minute quarters for longer games. Sophomore numbers drop off about 40%. In 2005, after winning state in 2004, we had 150 people for the JV and Varsity teams. So roughly 274 players wanted to play football. Somewhere the coaches find 22 to play! I wish SK the best of luck in the future. I admired them for not folding after Simpson got hurt in the third quarter playoff game last year. They showed they were much more than one player. The QB just willed the whole team to respond and compete and he is back this year.
