Any news on the open job at South Oldham? Anybody hearing any candidates or anything?

From what I hear they won't get much.

Don't know how many they'll get, but I know of at least two interested coaches - who will remain nameless, because neither gave me permission to mention their names here - and SOHS will likely get quite a few applicants. The facilities are top-notch, there are plenty of kids to draw from, and the school system is first-rate.

 

The school needs to develop a winning attitude in football, but the ingredients are all in place.

 

Not only that, but it would appear that South is poised to have a decent year next year.

Depends upon your definition of "previous success". I think you could be very surprised. However, I also think that the most likely scenario is that an assistant coach will win the job, as is the case at most schools.

After what went on in with the parents and the last coach, I would'nt consider it "winning" the job. Maybe getting "sentenced" to the job might be a better term. :laugh:

It's interesting to read the bolded comment by you. I thought South Oldham had a very good football team as recently as 2006 with a winning attitude. Is my memory failing or did things fall apart since 2006?

Thanks. To be honest, I'd have thought the 06 record would have been better. If I'm thinking of the right team (Gamsky I think was the name of their very good middle linebacker), they had a very solid team that year and played very hard. Very well coached team although I don't know who was coaching them.

Leatherneck, you might be thinking about the 2005 team that finished 6-5. That record was very deceiving. The Dragons (3A that year) lost to two extremely good 4A schools, Shelby County (by 2 points) and an 11-2 John Hardin team. They also lost to one of Covington Catholic's better teams and to Highlands by just one point.

 

They then got slammed by Franklin County in the first round of the playoffs in a real matchup problem...the Flyers' somewhat gimmicky passing game was like nothing South had seen and they fell behind early and lost 45-14. Highlands blew away the Flyers the next week.

 

Gamsky was one tough linebacker. He plays at Murray State now. His younger sister plays basketball for the current SOHS girls basketball team. She's a sophomore guard. The football coach in 05 and 06 was Nathan Jones.

 

The 2006 team was pretty good, actually, but they weren't in the same league as Highlands that year, losing to the Birds badly twice. They finished 6-4 - only played 9 regular season games - with losses to 4A Shelby County by 3, CovCath, and Highlands in the regular season, and then to Highlands in the first round of the 3A playoffs in Highlands. That playoff game was one of a couple of playoff games I've broadcast at Highlands over the years. (on the porch across from the stands...I'm sure you know where I'm referring to!)

 

The Dragons have been a competitive program, just not an overly successful one. Many years they played an extremely rough schedule and - like Covington Catholic often has done - paid for it with some added losses.

 

Having watched the parent issues among the local schools - both in and around Oldham County - including South Oldham, I'm convinced that there are no more parental issues there than at other schools. More than some; less than others. Without naming schools, I can tell you horror stories about parent problems - often involving lawyers - at schools that I'd be willing to bet the casual BGP member would think of as attractive football schools for a coach. All is not always as it seems.

 

I will say that some of the South fans certainly found an unusual way to antagonize a coach when they someone to do a survey, though...

 

But - in fairness to South - they also have some hard-working fans, too. There are some good folks there just waiting for a coach to tell them what to do. You should have seen what some parent volunteers did to the South locker room this past year... This is definitely not a job someone is going to be "sentenced" to. If I were a football coach, it's definitely one I'd be interested in...

 

As for my comment regarding a winning attitude, that shouldn't be taken too harshly. Unfortunately, I think South is too content with winning 6 or - on a good year - 7 games. And I think it's easier said than done changing that to get a community of people to EXPECT to win more, thereby raising their own bar. But that's a problem in a lot of places; South is hardly unique.

Speaking of Gamskey...did Taylor Sheer go on to play ball anywhere? He was a tough kid too!

Honestly this is a job I would like to have, I wish I had the time.
