I was just reading about the old Bracken County Gym and was wondering what other great gyms are gone.

In Montgomery County we no longer have the gym at Mt. Sterling High School or the Montgomery County High School gym (before the barn).

"Cats Den" Newport HS old gym last game was played in 1980. When it first opened it was the crown jewel of gyms in the ninth region. They use to crank the heat up before a game and legend was if you weren't 10 points better than the Wildcats going in you didn't have a prayer of coming out with a "W".

I would like to see the record of the Tigers from 1970's to the last game played in that gym. I would say they did not take a "L" more than 10 times during those days. :thumb: The old gym Carr Creek high school played in would be another great gym.

Still a gym, just empty. I thought that the Army was opening that up as a new school or something?

the Lincoln Grant Gym in Covington was a cracker jack box but legends like Tom Thacker and Oscar Robertson and Kenneth Simpson made their living on this court. What a special place.

 

When Lincoln Grant High School closed, the building was incorporated into the Northern Kentucky Community Center. We used to play Covington Recreation League games in their gym. It was very small even for rec games. The building is now in receivership but the gym still exists (at least for now).

 

Oscar played high school ball at Crispus Attucks (Indy). Did he play some games at Lincoln Grant?

My dad play at MMI in '56. One year, on the Saturday of the state tournament, between the semis and finals, he took me to the school. The gym was open and a ball was present. We played a few games of horse, it was a very nice moment for us to share.

I don't think I beat him too many times. He was a master of the hook shot with both hands and if I ever lost the lead he would resort to his arsenal.

I agree with Newports old gym, i used to dread going over their, what a home court advantage, it was a classic.

I know some may not agree with me on this one, but I always enjoyed the challenge of playing on St. Henry's old court. It was so small it had the moving half court line. Definitely a challenge.

From the 12th Region, I always liked Monticello's gym. It's actually still open, though.

 

Some great closed gyms in this region include Lancaster High (which was very similar to Somerset before the Jumpers remodeled a couple years ago), Crab Orchard High, Waynesburg Memorial (Lincoln County played there the first year of consolidation and won the region), and then some great oldies in Pulaski County like Shopville and Nancy.

 

The Lancaster High gym, which was built in the '30s as a WPA project, was torn down in the summer of 1991 to make room for a new elementary school and the old school was torn down the next year. The gym housed junior high and little league basketball, as well as PE classes when I was in school. Just a fantastic place, seats high and on the floor, with big windows in each endzone. I would give anything for that gym to still be standing.
