What gyms do people not miss?

Its still exists but my favorite old gym in NKY.....Turner's!

 

:thumb: I was just getting ready to mention Turner's had it not already been mentioned by you. No 3 point line on the sidelines...only on the wings and top of the key. Also love the old school feel with the balcony over the court around the baseline and sidelines.

 

A buddy of mine and I currently coach an 8th grade team down there. We both played there growing up and there has certainly been some very good nky high school players that grew up playing in the Turner's league as well.

 

I can still remember Brandon Hatton (Dixie) scoring 51 down there a few years ago and his team losing 54-53.

Wow, never heard that story on Hatton, thats pretty amazing. This probably should have a thread of it owns to discuss the great players and stories that came out of Turners.

 

I would venture to guess that a lot of the top talent in NKY at some point traveled through Turners.

While I hardly qualify as top talent in NKY (or anywhere else) I have a Turner's gym story. Turner's had an old style clock with a sweep second hand. We (Kenton County Boy's Club) were playing a very close game against Turner's. Near the end of the 3rd quarter I received an inbound pass when I noticed the sweep hand of the clock approaching the twelve o'clock position. I heaved up a length of the court shot that crashed into the rafters and missed the goal by about 30 feet ... with 2 minutes and 1 second left in the quarter.

I could be wrong but I think the oldest in NKY is CovCath's. I believe it was opened in '56. NCC is a clone but I don't know when they opened on the hill.

I believe NewCath and CovCath both opened in 1954. Highlands must be close to them in age. The old Campbel Co. gym still exists and is used for grade school practices I think.

All these old gyms sound very romantic, but were terrible to play in I'm sure. Like most "old" things people remember them as being really neat when actually they probably weren't much fun. Imagine today's games being played in these bandboxes.

I played at Boone's old gym several times but have vague memories of it. Wasn't the visiting locker room used as a football locker room too?? I seem to remember it being much larger than most.

 

BTW, anyone remember the old Holmes gym that's currently in the Jr high school? You couldn't see the players on the bench during a game because the balcony where folks sat was above them. Also had a "cage" at the far end of the gym that was literally two feet from the sideline. When did Holmes quit using that gym? I want to say sometime in the 60's but could be wrong.

We had a kid a few weeks ago shoot a 3 that bounced up off the rim and on to the balcony that's behind the backboard.

I played at Turner's as a boy and made sure my son experienced a few games there himself. I always love the Christmas Tournament they held each year. I don't think there's another gym around where you have to walk through a bar to get into the gym:thumb:.

How about the old gim at Nancy High School. It looked like a barn and wasn't much cleaner. The stands were right on the sidelines (spectators feet were actually on the floor) and the popcorn stand was in the corner of the gym right on the playing floor.

Anyone remember MMI's gym? What is it now?

 

I believe it is still there.

Maysville's old gym had some great games in it, I think someone still plays there, and old Paris Western.

In Montgomery County we no longer have the gym at Mt. Sterling High School or the Montgomery County High School gym (before the barn).

 

Were they torn down or are they used for something else now?

The old Montgomery County (Mapleton) gym sat empty and some kids let a fire get out of hand at it burnt. It is now the Kroger shopping center. Mt. Sterling High is being renovated and if money comes throgh it will become a psych. hospital for teens.
