Any pictures of Mt. Sterling's old gym? Be great to see some of these gyms.

Cynthiana High School Gym,known as City Hall Gym is still standing and is used as a recreation gym for kids and adults. It is in very bad shape, poor heating, gym floor is warped, and the restrooms are no longer working. However, it is still used. There is talk of replacing the floor if $ can be found. Coach Joe B. Hall and former KHSAA commissioner Louis Stout played their HS ball there.

 

Augusta Gym is something special to visit, as is the old Maysville High Gym. A lot of 10th region hoops history in those two gyms.

The "old" 10th Region had some real snake pit gyms, with tremendous home court advantages:

 

The "swimming pool" gym at Fleming Co.; the old Bracken Co. gym; Southside Gymnasium at Paris; the old gym at Bath Co.; Maysville's gym; Mt. Sterling's gym; a game or two was played at the old gym at Bourbon Co. in the 70s; MMi's gym; the over-hanging balcony at Augusta's gym; Deming's gym.

 

All of these venues had relatively small seating capacities, most of the team benches were on the first row of the bleachers, packed houses for every game, extremely hot or extremely cold locker rooms...never comfortable; virtually no parking for fans; the era when referees were not assigned, but were contracted by the home school coaches; many gyms that had entrances from directly outside right into the gym, which led to slippery conditions on slushy and cold winter nights...IT WAS ALL GOOD!! Great memories.

 

If you won on the road in these gyms, you were pretty good. If you won consistently on the road, you were REALLY good.

Maysville's old gym had some great games in it, I think someone still plays there, and old Paris Western.

 

It's the home floor for the Mason Co girls.

How about the old gim at Nancy High School. It looked like a barn and wasn't much cleaner. The stands were right on the sidelines (spectators feet were actually on the floor) and the popcorn stand was in the corner of the gym right on the playing floor.

It was a great little gym. Locker rooms were in the basement which made it kind of spooky for the young kids. I think they are storing farm equipment in there now. It's a shame they couldn't keep it open as a community center.

:thumb: I was just getting ready to mention Turner's had it not already been mentioned by you. No 3 point line on the sidelines...only on the wings and top of the key. Also love the old school feel with the balcony over the court around the baseline and sidelines.

 

A buddy of mine and I currently coach an 8th grade team down there. We both played there growing up and there has certainly been some very good nky high school players that grew up playing in the Turner's league as well.

 

I can still remember Brandon Hatton (Dixie) scoring 51 down there a few years ago and his team losing 54-53.

 

 

Saw that game was fun to watch.

 

Turners beat his team twice to win the Christmas Tournament. They were all 6th graders at the time, against what are now all Freshman at Cov Cath, Scott, Holy Cross and other places.

When I was at Shelby County we had a weekend road trip and played Carr Creek one night and Hazard the next. That was such a fun trip, at halftime you could hear Carr Creeks coach, and then I realized, you could look right through the wall and see their locker room. They were so nice to us before and after the game, great atmosphere.

I played in a benefit tournament, a few years later in KYROC, in Edmondson County. The man taking up tickets had a little wooden slat you could slide back and see the court.

My brother took a team to ?cloverport and had a shot blocked from the balcony

"The Barn" at Buckhorn. No heating except for a couple of blowers sitting just off of the floor, dead spots from endline to endline, no heat in the guest locker room and the seating capacity of a port-a-pottie among other amenities. Great times.

McKell High School gym. It was a great atmosphere to watch a game. When McKell, Greenup and Wurtland consolidated in the early 1970's, the school closed but the gym was used as the home gym for McKell Elementary 4th-8th

grade boys and girls until the new middle schools were built in the 1990's. The old gym is gone but my late 70's and early 80's memories are cherished ones.

I played at Boone's old gym several times but have vague memories of it. Wasn't the visiting locker room used as a football locker room too?? I seem to remember it being much larger than most.

 

BTW, anyone remember the old Holmes gym that's currently in the Jr high school? You couldn't see the players on the bench during a game because the balcony where folks sat was above them. Also had a "cage" at the far end of the gym that was literally two feet from the sideline. When did Holmes quit using that gym? I want to say sometime in the 60's but could be wrong.

Holmes used the old gym which was actually in the senior building through 1967. David Evans field house was opened in 1968.

70's and 80's Old Louisville Male High court in downtown Louisville. A lot of tradition, memory, and heritage in that old gym. Not a bad seat in the house and the court is encompassed with old wooden seats.

 

Griff had some unreal performances there. But none was like the game that featured Winston Bennett against the New Jersey squad that brought in McCray. Male got the V in that sellout game.
