The real reason for attendance issues, has nothing to do with Title IX, football or anything else. We simply in our state, play too many games. Period. Our schools play a maximum of 29 games, versus 10 specific Friday dates in football. That's why the support is watered down and spread out, and then is only concentrated into one venue at state tournament. It has nothing to do with classes, public private, football or anything else, but is simply dilution. We play more games than 80% of the states in the country and then complain about the consequences. If we played less nights, those nights would be more focused, there wouldn't be Title IX date worries, and probably, single game attendance would increase.

My guess is that it is a lot more than that. There was a legislative led group that studied this not more than 10 years ago with interesting conclusions. At that point, in 30 years, exactly 1/2 of the winners had come from thursday first round games, and 1/2 from wednesday, so it made no competitive difference. The cost of the arena is minimal from what they found. however, the cost to the fans for another night of premium rate housing, and the cost of team travel for additional days were significant factors. In all reality, you would increase the costs of running both tournaments by 25%, simply by going from four days to five. IMHO, if there were ever any kind of change (which I hope there is not), it would be to have some sort of game randomly drawn between region and state so that you could bring 8 boys and 8 girls teams to Rupp Arena for a Sweet Sixteen and use only one school week.

Wrong. Etown's girl fumbled the ball, then threw it back in trying to save it. Mathies has it when the whistle blows. Worst case, the bad over and back call. best case, inadvertent whistle and Iroquois ball. 17 turnovers, all kinds of missed opportunities for both teams, a couple of missed out of bounds calls that could have gone either way but favored Etown. Face it, in a close game, all plays are magnified. The three best officials in the tournament we on the game, they worked a good game, they (nor the players or coaches) were not perfect. In the end, only one can win.

Just out of curiousity, who in KHSAA should change the spring practice times? If I read the info right, the schools have voted on changes twice, and it hasn't passed either time. So the schools should keep trying to change it? Or their office in Lexington should do something? Just looking for clarity.

From what I have been told, its one and done. Was a short term experiment to test an answer that might avoid further disruptive realignments when consolidations occur. But its "different" so I hear it wasn't well received by anyone outside of Region 15. Heaven forbid try anything new (like renumbering football regions to get different brackets) They are to keep everything the same way it has been for 40 years even if the number of schools change.

With due respect doctor, you couldn't be more wrong. Compared to the old rule, the only change is simple. Now the three permitted coaches from last year must now also be in the coaches box when the ball is alive. So arguments about space, site lines, everything else, are just smoke screens. If there was room for the old rule, there is room for 3 more people. And I suspect the officials will be held very accountable for making sure the rule is observed.

As I remember reading, the reason Fort Knox and some others had to be turned down was that they left a three team district behind. That was why Ashland couldn't move from what was on their web site. Depending upon what happens in enrollment, you might see both move in 2011. Mercer as I remember, was allowed to remain because it was in the middle of a contract (second of two years). This is clearly before the start of two year schedules.

But it would be irresponsible for any adult to try and draw conclusions on %'s, etc. Your note above about 99.99%, simply isn't backed up by the facts. Talk to the researchers at Ohio State who deal in high school injuries, or the North Carolina doctor who has done the catastrophe research in the past. While some of these deaths (a very small portion according to their research) may be undetected situations, nearly all are preventable. Football,necessarily, will always be the most regulated sport.

That's correct. Football has been, is, and always will be, the most restricted sport. Unfortunately, it is the one sport where the push for MORE AND MORE leads to tragedy nearly every year. Cancelled game was on Tuesday night from what I heard, three days before the Hazard state finals. Hazard appeared to not want to play without their football players. They had written contract to play. Draw your own conclusions.

That horse has had four funerals, three full masses and about six burials. It is dead. It won't be resurrected unless there is a major change in superintendent leadership. Put the saddle in a museum and enjoy the view. As for WKU, I think you will see a much more hospitable host. That area across the stadium could easily be an area where fans who have all day tickets could be admitted get warm, maybe have vendors, etc. For those who only come for one game, it doesn't matter anyway. As for warm-up time, I kind of watched that one this year as I was getting colder and colder. Every team, including Bell County, got the 45 minutes that was prescribed by the instructions, and originally recommended by all the coaches. Teams that need more than that to warm up are not efficient enough to be in the state finals. My look at what other states do show that 45 minutes is incredibly longer than most schools get on the competition field, and that four hours in between is much, much longer. So it all depends on what your purpose is for more time. I for one have always agreed with a schedule that puts the biggest crowds in teh night game slots. Facts are facts and those teams with bigger enrollments (and in most cases more fans), should get the preferred slots. Just a fact of life. But what the heck do I know, except how to stir up LN.

There's a crossroads here as LN and PR talk about open enrollment and self-imposed restricted choice. Central has proven that if you can make your program attractive enough to make the kids within your natural district boundaries want to attend, you don't need open enrollment. When the Federal court order was dissolved, Central began seeing its own neighborhood kids come back to their own building instead of being bussed all over Jefferson County. They staffed the teams with outstanding coaches, and you can see the success. Programs are like mythical baseball fields, if you build them, they will come. Building a sense of community, of pride, of dedication, of purpose, those are the building blocks. That's the natural advantage of a lot of the independent districts in that they have a history of community and a sense of purpose. That foundation is undeniable and very much underpins their programs. That's what some of the schools out in the state are realizing too. The tough part is finding that magic person that can bind them together. Take Dudley Hilton. Whatever you want to say about him, the man is a master at keeping people focused on the long term goals. And I don't even mean the Bell County experience. Just look at what happened at Bourbon when someone who knows how to get kids to run through a wall for him, connects with a group of young men. Not before nor after has that school seen that. Haywood at Belfry, he's another one. It isn't just one thing. It isn't just enrollment boundaries, purpose, community, motivation, weight rooms, off season work, district alignment, it is all those and more rolled into one. Sorry LN, didn't mean to threaten your record for post length.

Personally, it could that their insistence on hiring coaches from within already unsuccessful current programs has to play a role in all of this. Rather than scouring and finding successful coaches who want to move to a larger class in a great city; paying them as they can and should (they have one of the biggest budgets in the state; equipping them with training facilities and demonstrating a school-wide commitment; rather than doing all that, they choose to think that somehow, someone who wasn't working on a successful staff can somehow initiate success. Success is an atmosphere and an attitude, not an action. Not that the coaches aren't good people, in many cases, you don't find better human beings and characters. But your post was about winning. And in this sport, as was proven again this year, you generally have to know how to win to create a winning atmosphere. Those five schools continually prove Einstein's definition of insanity, they just keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

OK. Before HDE gets a chance to respond, I will throw something out there. You titled this thread the KHSAA and again. You do mean the member schools of the KHSAA don't you. Their Board can't just make season rules and practice rules, those are made by a 2/3 vote of the schools. And welcome out from under the rock you have been sleeping under. This action was voted on in October, 2007 if my memory serves me correctly. And the only thing that changed was the elimination of school vs. school competition in June. The other items you mentioned are not rules changes I don't think, and are just bad rumors. One suggestion however. I think if you check every state in the nation, you might find Kentucky football schools get as much practice as any state in the union. To be specific, and using the NCAA reference (in this one, it happens that the NFHS stats manual says the same), the Qb gets 1 carry, plus his yards that go beyond the LOS. Then the tailback gets NO carry, but gets rushing yards. that way, there is only 1 carry (Rush attempt) on any play. In your second, same thing. First guy gets teh reception and his yards. Second one doesn't get a reception, but gets receiving yards. I think KHSAA sells the NFHS stats manual (I saw it on their web site). Covers several sports. Or you can use your own paper and download the NCAA manual.

According to the stats manuals, it depends on where the ball is spotted. In your case, let's say the ball is touching the 20 on the snap. If at the end of the next play, the ball is spotted between the 21 and 22, then the ball is "scored" at the 22 yard line. Hence a two-yard gain. You aren't rounding, you are spotting. The only exception is a bit of a quirk. You can never "score" the ball where it would give a first down if a first down wasn't granted. So for example, let's say your play was a 2nd and 2 from the 20. The player only gained to between the 21 and 22, but did not get to the 22 to give him first down. Then you have to "score" the ball at the 21 and thus, give him only one yard. Same would be true on goal line. Bottom line is that the series cannot add up to ten yards if a first down isn't granted. I know it sounds quirky, but that's in both NCAA and NFHS stats manuals and ensures consistency. It really has nothing to do with rounding, it is just looking at where the ball lays.

I think there is a lot more to it than you say here if you talk to folks from Ohio. Ohio's rules allow the OHSAA to take all the money from every round of postseason play except for the first round, according to my Ohio school business friends. What this means is they don't have to be so protective of the money from a single round like KHSAA does. KHSAA only has the revenue from football, for example, from six games, all played at a neutral site. Compare that to Ohio where they would have revenue coming in for weeks that could pay for development, production and everything else necessary to put live broadcasts on the internet. It isn't something from what I have been told, that is simply cheap and easy to do. I applaud the OHSAA and perhaps with more funding from other rounds, the KHSAA could follow suit. But my guess is that the schools in Kentucky (even though they certainly aren't budgeted for anything past the first round) are probably not going to consider any kind of change, so we will be left to watch the reduced screen video through normal video streaming.

BUT, its the obligation of the player to MAKE SURE he does not do anything that anyone could construe as simulating the start of the play or doing something that could make the defense be drawn.
