"Bluegrasspreps.com Game of the Week" Trinity 59 Male 56 (2002)

Featured Replies

Teams and Score: Trinity 59 Male 56

Year: 2002

RS or PO: 4A state championship game

Location: Ky Fair and Expo Center-Cardinal Stadium

Details why this game should be the "Game of the Week": In the highest scoring state championship game in history, the Shamrocks and Bulldogs combined for 1,337 yards, 17 touchdowns, 63 first downs, just three punts (all in the first half) and, amazingly, only one turnover. That proved to be a big one as Trinity intercepted a Male pass at its 1-yard line with just over a minute to play to end the slugfest and clinch its 14th state championship.

“There was a lot of heart shown on both teams,” said Trinity coach Bob Beatty. “Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose, but that will be something we all hold with us for the rest of our lives.”

That sentiment was echoed on the Male side.

“I tip my hat to the kids on both these teams. We saw something pretty special tonight,” said Bulldogs coach Bob Redman. “There weren’t any losers out there tonight.”

Brian BrohmFittingly, two of the best players the state has ever produced were at center stage for the epic battle. Brian Brohm (right), a junior quarterback and recent Sports Illustrated coverboy, led Trinity up against Male’s senior quarterback, Michael Bush.

Bush, who was named Mr. Football earlier in the week, is one of the nation’s most coveted recruits for the Class of 2003. He has dozens of scholarship offers with almost every major program knocking at his door.

Meanwhile, Brohm, the younger brother of former University of Louisville and NFL quarterback Jeff Brohm, figures to be one of the marquee names for 2004. In his two seasons as the Shamrocks’ starter, he’s passed for 86 touchdowns and only six interceptions.

On this night, both of them were on top of their games like never before.

Brohm completed 19 of 25 passes for 552 yards and seven touchdowns. His gorgeous scoring strikes came from 32, 72, 45, 18, 36, 77 and 85 yards out. He also ran for an additional 52 yards and another score.

Bush was 33-of-47 for 468 yards and six touchdowns while carrying the ball 24 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. He never came off the field, playing more than 150 plays on offense, defense and special teams in a “Rocky-type” effort that personified this heavyweight bout.

Details why this game should be the "Game of the Week":

This should be the greatest game ever in Ky high school football history. It featured two of the most storied Ky high school football players ever in Michael Bush and Brian Brohm. It featured two of the biggest traditional football powers in Trinity and Male. It was probably the highest scoring title game ever and if it isn't I know it is close. It was a game that brought a tremendous amount of hype and it lived up to it which is also rare. Not to mention, I didn't go to this game, nor have I seen a game tape(but I would love to watch it even now). I had a friend who was there and I'll never forget the phone call he made after the game trying to describe what he had just witnessed. I haven't received a phone call about a football game like that phone call and that is all I have to go by, but I am sure and I will be shocked if this isn't the most nominated game. I remember when Brohm and Bush were at Louisville and Michael Bush said that to this day he still couldn't bring himself to watch the tape of that game. Greatest game ever and if it isn't I want to see what is.

If you have a nomination for the "Bluegrasspreps.com Game of the Week", please visit this link. You can nominate more then one game. Your nomination does not have to be a playoff or Championship game, just a great game that exemplifies Kentucky High School Football.

Best game I've ever seen on any level...

I'll never forget the magical moment of being bundled up standing side by side with my dad just saying to each other over and over "we are watching history!" I'll never forget being able to share that awesome game together.

THE BEST IN STATE HISTORY!

I think you could make an argument that it has to be up there as one of the best in national history!

I beieve the 2002 game between Trinity and Male was at the Fairgrounds and not Papa John's.

Best high school game I've seen in person without a doubt..

Correct. It was the game that closed down the old Cardinal Stadium. What a way to go out. If there has ever been a better game in the state, it was before my time.

THE BEST IN STATE HISTORY!

I had the exact same experience with my father. It was wonderful!

I really couldn't believe the talent level that was on each side of the ball at quarterback. Made for one great unforgettable show!!!!!!

There's not much point in nominating any other games...I'm sure we could all throw some great ones out there, but all things considered, nothing in KY High School football history is going to touch that Trinity/Male game. Michael Bush was amazing in that game...

Nominate away. We don't have to have only the best game ever, just some great games. We've got several months to relive the past.

Will never forget the experience. Glad I was a eyewitness. No other HS game (or any game for that matter) in this State - should even be discussed in the same breath. There are hills and then there is Everest.

Like a Heavyweight Fight - a real match between two champions. No quit in either.

Still gives chills.:thumb:

The moment you knew it was going to be special? Brohm throwing four perfect passes that resulted in three TDs and covered over 200 yards...
