Will never forget the experience. Glad I was a eyewitness. No other HS game (or any game for that matter) in this State - should even be discussed in the same breath. There are hills and then there is Everest.

Male ran 89 offensive plays & made 41 first downs in a 48-minute game, went 8-12 on 3rd down & 7-10 in the red zone. And it wasn't quite enough to win. A truly incredible effort by both teams. :thumb:

This was a phenomenal game. If it wasn't the best game every, ... I would like to see which game beats it!!

I honestly am torn...until the 2007 State Championship game between Trinity and X, I was absolutely sure the Trinity/Male game was the best ever. However, even though not as high scoring, the 2007 State battle between T and X sometimes becomes my favorites as I reminisce.

That was the hey day of BGP: LSURock, H, Since 1856, et al all bantering about.

 

I remember sitting in the end zone watching Tay outrun Sergio on the 77 yard go and thinking to myself this is eerily similar to the NFL Films classic shot of Willie Brown's interception return in Superbowl XI.

 

Look at Trinity's first three drives of the 3rd quarter:

 

1. TOUCHDOWN 2-84 00:16 seconds

2. TOUCHDOWN 1-77 00:10 seconds

3. TOUCHDOWN 1-85 00:14 seconds

Many who make that point often were unaware that Trinity had an excellent defense that year. Let me offer the following:

 

Coming into the State Final Trinity was allowing only 6.14 points a game and had faced Andre Woodson at North Hardin, St. X and Elder, who went on to win Ohio's title. Male, and specifically Bush, was just that good.

I have just about worn out my tape I've watched it so many times.

Coming into this game both Trinity and Male were undefeated and had, for lack of a better term, demolished all opposition through the season. Combined, both teams had allowed a total of 278 points and 1,337 yards of offense all season (an average of 9 ppg and 47.75 ypg per team). Trinity’s marquee win prior to this game was a 44-20 dismantling of Ohio Division I champion Elder. As anyone can tell you, a win against a squad like Elder was impressive but that kind of win was inconceivable. Male on the other hand absolutely destroyed St.X 51-26 on their way to meet the Shamrocks in the playoffs; which was the highest point total ever allowed by a St.X team in a single game.

 

Not only had these two shown they were head and shoulders above every other team in the state but they had national rankings and All American QBs to boot! Trinity (#4 in the nation) was led by the spectacular Brian Brohm who was touted to have been one of the top QBs in the upcoming class of 2004. Male (#25 in the nation) was led by Mr. Everything Michael Bush. Not only was Mike an exceptional QB(well nigh impossible to sack for a single HS player), but he also played defense and special teams. During this game he was rarely off the field. This was a game in which you had two men among boys playing. No team in this state could have stopped or slowed these offenses down that night.

Whoever faced either squad, had one or the other not made it, would have had no D in that game. I would concede that a complaint regarding the defenses could be justified had it been possible to stop either offense. The fact is that no one that any of these teams played that season came close to stopping them. The closest anyone came to stopping Trinity was a 16-0 defeat of St. X early in the season.

 

My point is more or less had any defense in the state been able to stop or slow these offenses I would admit it was a valid point. That said, with the kind of players in that game and the quality of the offenses it says a lot that neither team's defense could do squat to the other's offense. The stats provided should easily indicate that these defenses were not weak defenses either. These offenses were just that unstoppable.
