Looks good to me. I feel like Central is and should be the favorite, with Bell County as their most likely challenger. And, if anyone outside of those two can sneak up and win it all, it will come from the trio of Tilghman, Belfry or Breathitt County.

I agree. That would be sweet. Based on what I read, he wouldn't do it though because it would attract attention to himself. Coach Holcomb is more like Belichick, he likes the casual wear, sweatshirts and such. :lol:

Congratulations from a rival to Coach Haywood. I've always thought it was pretty cool that he wears the suit and tie on the sideline.

What I said was not intended to slight any of the other programs. I just think Central presents the worst matchup possible for my home team. Breathitt County is an above average team athletically, IMO, and they rely on that to be their advantage. They run a shotgun spread option (think West Virginia under RichRod). They are more of a running team (260+ yards per game), but they have good balance (180+ passing yards per game). However, they are not a grind it out, pound the ball team. They thrive on big plays. I'm afraid Central's speed would take the big plays away. Of course, I'll be happy if they make it that far.

I agree with everyone on the top 5. Central and Bell County, in that order, are clearly the top two teams. I don't know as much about Tilghman, but I wouldn't have a problem with any order consisting of Tilghman, Breathitt County and Belfry. I think a potential third round Breathitt/Belfry matchup is a game that could go either way. Those two programs have hooked up for some memorable playoff games over the years that have featured just about anything you can think of...muddy fields, questionable calls, blowouts, nailbiters, etc. I think Bell County or Central would have to be a solid favorite against any other Class 3A team. The good news for the rest of us is that those two will likely face off in the region finals. That means none of the 3-5 teams will have to beat both of them to win the state. I can't speak for other teams, but I think Breathitt County would have to play flawless and get a little luck to boot to beat Central. They would be a terrible matchup for Breathitt County.

Breathitt County committed 3 TO's in the first quarter and Hazard capitalized by scoring 27 points in the opening quarter. The Bobcat D shut the Bulldogs down from that point on and they clawed their way back. Late in the fourth (around 5-6 minutes to play) Breathitt scored to tie the game at 27, but Hazard blocked the PAT to keep the score tied. They then proceeded to return the ensuing kickoff for a TD to put themselves back ahead 34-27. The Bobcats returned the ball near mid-field and then Trent broke the big TD run a few plays later. Holcomb decided to go for 2 and the Bobcats converted and held on for the win. Pretty exciting game. Both teams deserve credit. Hazard for taking advantage of opportunities to build a lead, and the Bobcats for keeping their composure, fighting back and pulling out the win.

I agree. The team's were pretty closely matched, IMO. The difference was Breathitt's defense stiffening in the red zone and keeping the Briar Jumpers out of the end zone. The two teams and this game are/was closer than this score would suggest.

What are the criteria for Trinity to be the best team ever? 1. They have to win the 6A Championship. What else? Do they have to go undefeated? I don't think so. Not with their schedule.

I don't. With their schedule, Trinity doesn't have to go undefeated to be considered the best team in KY High School history. JMO

Pretty impressive. What else can you say? It's kinda funny to me that the drama in 6A this season is all about Trinity's regular season. The post-season is just a formality. It will be a letdown after the suspense of seeing how the Rocks do against all the marquee out-of-state opponents they face.

The score was 41-12 after one quarter. I've never seen anything like it in a high school game. It literally seemed like the teams scored on every other play for a stretch. I don't know much about Newport, but they had no answer for the Bobcat offense in this one. Breathitt County has a good shot at making a deep playoff run. They probably have their best combination of QB and skill players since their last state championship team in 2002. QB (Trent) is much improved as a passer. More accurate, better touch on the ball. He's also the best runner on the team, which is saying something because the RB (Collins) is no slouch himself. He's a very good runner and also a good receiver out of the backfield. And, they have at least 3 good options at WR in the passing game. They've got room for improvement, so the potential is there to be even better. If they reach that potential, they'll be a challenge for any team in the class, IMO.

They returned most of their skill player, but I'm pretty sure they had to replace a lot of linemen. They are a small team.

Highlands is certainly the favorite in 4A, but I wouldn't rule out Boyle County being able to beat them come playoff time. I don't know about the other schools some have mentioned, but based on the Rebels track record, it is a reasonable expectation that they'll be a much improved team by season's end. As far as Trinity, I would agree. I think they're a lock. I doubt they even get tested in 6A.

I don't get it either. It's not uncommon to sit a player during the week to nurse an injury, so they can be ready for the game. Obviously, I don't know everything about this story, but generally speaking, if a kid is sick and can't practice for a day or two, that wouldn't be an issue for me if he was well on game day.

Byrnes produced Marcus Lattimore. Who else have they produced? Trinity has Brian Brohm on its resume. Bringing up one great player from a school's past doesn't mean that much. My high school alma mater has never come close to producing a collegiate superstar, much less an NFL player, yet they defeated the school that produced Thomas Jones. :idunno: I'm aware that Byrnes is a high school football power in the state of South Carolina. I also agree that the quality of football as a whole is better in the southern states vs. Kentucky. The problem is that that argument doesn't mean much when discussing Trinity. The Shamrocks have proven over the past decade that their level of football is significantly higher than public school football in KY, so I figure that puts them on a similar level. Considering many seem to believe this may be their best team ever, it is hard for me to believe they'd get trounced by anyone. And finally, since when does Ballard represent the best of KY's public schools? They're 28-20 in the last 4 years, they've been eliminated in the second round of the 6A playoffs in each of those 4 years, and they've given Trinity one competitive game in that span (2009, which was a down year for Trinity). Ballard vs. Trinity 2007: 48-23 & 63-14 2008: 38-7 & 37-13 2009: 21-14 2010: 56-21 Trinity's average margin of victory in six games over 4 years is roughly 30 points.

I don't know anything about Newport. Breathitt County has a pretty solid team this season. Considering Newport will be making the long trip to Jackson, I'm expecting a Bobcat W this weekend. I'm looking forward to it. I've got some relatives in Newport, so its always fun when Breathitt County plays them. It rarely happens in football. That last time I can recall playing them was in the 1996 Class 2A region finals.

About what I expected. I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been a closer final score, but the game was very competitive. It was tied 14-14 about midway through the third quarter, so I wouldn't call this one a blowout.

I'll take Trinity, simply based on two things. 1) how good they have been in the past 10 years and 2) the possibility that this may be their best team to date. I know nothing about MBA.

I agree with you. If anything, I think a scrimmage would be a time to show more. To try a few new wrinkles or plays to see how they work and to possibly give upcoming opponents something new to think about. But, this isn't the National Football League, it's high school. Teams, certainly the good ones, do scout, prepare and game plan, but they aren't staying up to 3 AM planning for every single play and formation they've ever seen. As you said, the teams are generally familiar with each other and know what to expect. Most of these teams run the same offenses year after year.

I think they seed, but I'm not 100% sure about it.

Just curious, but how do these two teams play in this scrimmage. Is it a scrimmage, or more like a real game since both want to prove themselves against the "other best team" in the state?
