I think the powers to be here are saying the win over X in the title game was a fluke. Fair enough. But Male has done nothing to deserve a #1 ranking, even with all the talent they have had since 2000 (has it been that long). They might win it all in Dec, but no way I would put them preseason #1. I would put X first. End of story. They will have their best O-Line ever (at least better than last year’s which was supposed to be their best ever), one of the top 3 RB’s in the state, and a very good QB. Add a great soph RB to the mix (he's the real deal), and this offense is primed. Their D is always sound. Add in the loss to T in the finals... Come on. They have all the pieces and more than enough motivation. T loses 3 terrific targets for Petrino. 1 WR is back. We also lose our 2 RB's which really made the offense fly. And we lost senior leaders from the O-line. 2 of the top 3 DB's in the state (WR and RB on O) are gone. The d-line is thin again because of graduating senior o-linemen that went both ways. The LB's should be OK, but they can only do so much without a d-line. I would put T at 3 behind X and Male. We do have a great punter, which should help early in the season. Of course this is only preseason.

All the “little things” are expected to accomplished. It’s a given that the kids will make the grades, say their prayers, etc. If they are not, then we have other things to address than winning. But that being said, most of our kids do exactly what they should as Trinity football players. Therefore, what is left is the winning.

Exactly! Too many times you hear coaches blame something that is out of their control for a loss. It's a easy way out. :thumb:

Interesting 3 part questionnaire. I have a couple of questions: 1. How do you quantify talent level? Do you coaches tell the kids "Team XYZ" has more talent than we do before the game? 2. Do you tell your kids the number of boys your opponent has before the game? 3. How do you quantify program support? On that same scale, where do you quantify your program? Do you have any concerns you might be giving your kids too many "excuses" for losing. Maybe they wouldn't say it, but they might think: "Well they had more fans in the stands. Plus that running back was good. And don't forget they have 75 more boys in their school. We didn't have a chance." However I know you are a well respected coach, so what do I know. :thumb:

We will always strive to be best. If we played in your theoretical league, we would welcome the competition and strive to win the title. We would understand to be the best we would need to beat the best. In some years, we would fall short. Still, that would not stop us from setting our goals high. Programs set goals they feel are appropriate for their own team. I get the feeling that many people think we are being arrogant for having a different definition of a successful season. I’m not attacking smaller, less successful programs for having different goals. Don’t take it personal. We’ve taken our share of lumps too. We just set the bar high at Trinity. It’s just the way it is. I can't understand why anyone would attack us for this. Is it arrogant for the military to set their goal to beat any other military in a conflict? I think not.

Trinity is Trinity because we set the highest goals and very often achieve them. Go ahead and keep setting "reasonable goals" and stay at the same level. If that makes you happy, great. But don't attack us because we set the bar higher and then leap over it. I can see it now. The KHSAA will try to force Trinity and X to set “more attainable goals” to level the playing field.

No way Trinity should be ranked 15th in the nation, yet.

Let's see. You post that Danville is having double sessions. Trinity's first practice is on Monday. You do the math.

Many people feel that way. Taking it to an extreme, which would be more impressive: a high school team winning 50 in a row or an NFL team winning 50 in a row? But don't get too fired up, it's just our opinion.

With the classes becoming watered down, I say yes. Less competition. It would still be a great challenge and accomplishment for a team to win 51+. But without beating the equivalents to Warren Central, Boone, X, Ballard, Waggener, Fairdale, and Paducah Tilghman type teams from the late 80's and early 90's, it would not be equal. With that, I say 50 will be broken within 5 years.

Why would ANYONE move up for competitive reasons? This plan was put in place to make it easier to win, not harder. If teams move up, it means this plan was not necessary in the first place.

Exactly. In defense of RP, at Trinity a successful season includes winning a title. It's a corner stone. THE goal. If we don't win a title, it does not mean the team did not have fun, play hard, learn life lessons, etc. It's just the way it is. Had we not won the title last year, it would not have been a success in my mind, and in the mind of many of Trinity fans. Other's may have different ways of defining success. But I think at top programs, regardless of the sport, they do not define a season with out a title as a success.

This is about making it easier, not hard.

Don't worry. The playoffs will allow them to play closer to home.

Petrino continues to impress me personally with his toughness. I believe that to be his specialty. As to the defense, what effect did the d-line, blitzing LB's, and contact have in those 7 on 7 games? I'm guessing not much.
