I want to clear something up about 6 classes and the public/private split..

Featured Replies

While reading through many of the threads on the site I believe many of us are not fully informed about why the 6 class system came to be.

First of all, the member schools voted to separate (kick out) the private schools but this decision was not approved by either the Board of Control or the Board of Education which both ultimately decide how education and athletics are going to be administered in KY. I do not want to debate this part in this thread (another thread is fine).

Many people seem to think the 6 class system is just a ploy by the KHSAA to cool the ant-private school sentiment. While I agree the KHSAA likes the 6 class format for just that reason, 6 classes came to be because the Football Advisory Board DID recommend the 6 class system back in November 2005 and NOT because the KHSAA, the Board of Control, or the Board of Education came up with it. Again, the football coaches brought this idea to the KHSAA.

Also, at the KY Football Coaches Association meeting in June at Centre College the coaches also were given a chance to voice their support or problems with the system. There was NOT a lot of negative on the 6 class system but there was a lot of support for the 6 class system.

I would say that the coaches that have a problem would have a problem with anything new. I also wonder if the coaches complaining now ever read their KY Football Coaches Association emails or if they ever get involved with such matters? Also, all the coaches had over a year to comment and work on this issue if they had a problem with the 6 class system and they didn't speak up.

Furthermore, if any of these coaches that are speaking out now against 6 classes failed to voice their opposition to the KY Football Coaches Association over the last year then you have to call both their integrity and professionalism into question.

The bottom line is, the KY Football Advisory Board recommended 6 classes to the Board of Control and the BOC approved it. In other words, the Football Coaches Union (if you will) said this is what they wanted and that is exactly what they got.

So could we be looking at this class format taking place on next years re-districting since the KHSAA will use the numbers from this year to form the districts for next year.

There was a majority on the KY Football Advisory Board wanting 6 classes, but I do know there were also some on the board that DID NOT want 6 classes. But the majority rules on the Football Advisory Board unlike the KHSAA Board of Control.

Fair enough.

If anyone's opinion is valued in this, I would think that valuing their opinion is best.

I am not sure what numbers are going to be used but unless something drastic happens reversing the latest vote for 6 classes we will have a 6 class football system in 2007.

Like you said, majority rules, and the majority of the KY Football Advisory Board wanted 6 classes.

Also, majority rules on the BOC too. I have no idea where you are getting that from???

This situation has been discussed for at least the last 18 months at the coaches meeting. Yes there are those that do not agree within the coaching ranks but when you look at what is best for football throughout the state..... The best solution was a 6 class system. The 5 class system was also good but the numbers did not work out dividing into 5 classes. Both systems were looked at and the Best over all was the 6 class system.

This new classification / realignment has nothing to do with the Public -Private problem. This was in the works before that ever happened. and How does changing football classifications help Baseball, Volleyball, Softball, Soccer, and all the other Public-Private Problems. This was the year for realignment and when you looked at the VERY LARGE DISTRICTS and the PROBLEM with POPULATIONS within the classifications, 4-Classes just didn't work for this state. So please do not think that this reclassification is an answer or response to the Public-Private vote last year.

I would say on Monday the final listings of attendance will be released by the KHSAA and you can start to see the 6 new classes and where each school fits in. Then the excitement will begin.

What schools will choose to play up ?

What will your new district be ?

It has been a long time since there were any changes in Ky. Football. As a coach or player you have to be excited. There will always be those that do not like change 1/3 Those that are not sure but what to see how it goes 1/3 and then Those that love the excitment of the New and Different 1/3.

I have read the posts on this Website for the last few months. It is funny to see the same arguments coming up.

When we went to 4 Classes there were those Arguments. Too many champions , Too easy to win a Championship , Not enough teams for us to have 4-A, Watering down and weakening football, and of course the Championship doesn't mean as much.

When we went to two teams making the playoffs from each district.... Again we will weaken and cheapen football in Kentucky.

When we went to 4 teams making the playoffs from each district...... The same aurguments. Why not let everyone into the playoffs ? It will ruin Football.

Well each time Football in this state has improved. More teams become competitive, More new teams start playing football, More excitment, Better Football in Kentucky.

Now we will have more teams making the playoffs. We will crown 2 more champions. I like what Coach Perry Thomas said in the paper this week. If we win a state championship I will be proud to wear that ring.

Remember this is about the Student-athletes in Kentucky.

There are 9 other states that crown 4 or less Football Champions and there are 41 states that crown more than 4 State champions.

The idea of Classification is to level the playing field so that you are competing with schools of like populations. With our 4 Class system we had schools with 75- 100% more boys than schools in the same classification. So if classification is to work we must have a way to level the field. In the past 2.5 years we looked at 3 classes with 2 divisions in each class (6 champions) WE looked at 4 classes with 2 divisions each (8 champions) 5 classes, 6 classes, redistricting and the best system numbers wise was 6 classes. Is it best for every school NO ! Is it best for Football ? We sure think so. Either way we are going to try it.

and a voice of reason comes out of the wilderness........

Thanks for the post. I realize you didn't have to, but did anyway. :thumb:

It's about impossible to have everybody see things the same way, so it doesn't surprise me that there is this much debate, but I can honestly say that I think in the end football in the state of KY will be better for it.

I agree with both of your assessments. :thumb:

Good luck this year coach! I hope to see the Warriors in Papa Petrino's at the end of the season.

I think it's unfair to suggest that the coaches who are against this plan were somehoe asleep at the wheel or didn't care to voice their opinions earlier. There's no way to know whether they complained to the association or to what degree they participated in the decision.

Frankly, I think they have valid concerns. You can characterize it anyway you like to make it sound wonderful; but it really is watering down the competition. And I don't see how it can be assumed that the earlier changes made football in the state any better or that they did not, in fact, make it worse. Such a concept is too hard to quantify really.

I'd be interested to know of the 41 states that crown more than 4 champions have a separate division, and in some cases 2-3 separate divisions, for private schools.

Some very good points, but I think you're going to see the same old faces doing most of the winning only it will be even easier for them to win a championship.

I think you're right about the same old faces. Also in the 2 new classes ( lets call them 5A and 1A) you will probably see the same thing. 3 or 4 teams will emerge as the class of those classes. Should be interesting to see how that shakes out.

And to that end I'll suggest this: It is my understanding that the KFCA meeting in Danville isn't exactly "heavily attended" by the majority of football coaches across the bluegrass state. So naturally, many of the views for or against 6 classes wouldn't have been represented at that meeting. Now before you get all up in a tizzy, I agree, if they can't take the time to go to the meeting, then they don't deserve a say in the process. I'm just offering this piece of info as to a clue as to why we seem to have so many coaches "against" the 6 class idea when apparently there wasn't much disapproval at Centre in June.

On a personal note: thanks for clearing things up 'Ru. I know I was a bit confused myself. However, I still feel that this is really just an olive branch to the public schools to try and prevent a public/private split. The KHSAA had to do something, heck 70% of the membership voted for a split and they said, flat out, NO. Clearly, if you don't please the majority of your membership, your not going to have a job for long.

Really? So it was better back in the day? I'd be interested in hearing about it. I'm not disagreeing necessarily, it's just contrary to what I hear most people say when they look back objectively. And the most people I refer to are coaches.
