PurpleHaze Western Kentucky Co-GOW: Owensboro (4-1) vs. Christian County (5-1)
I'm not saying Christian County can't win, but a 14 point win at Rash Stadium against this OHS team is a bold prediction. I'm excited to see Christian County in person. I look for the Colonels to get after OHS with a lot of pressure on defense. I agree with Purple adoptee that if OHS is clicking, Christian County is in trouble. OHS seems to be getting the offense in line and if that happens everyone in 5A could be in trouble. I'm looking forward to a good test against a quality program with high level players. I wish Friday was tomorrow!

PurpleHaze Western Kentucky Co-GOW: Owensboro (4-1) vs. Christian County (5-1)
This is going to be a fun game for us (The Homers) to cover. I'm really excited to see Christian County's dynamic duo of Kolbe Langhi and Keyron Catlett. OHS' run defense is very stout so in order for Christian County to upset the Devils, they'll have to have success through the air. Owensboro Catholic's Ray Zuberer sliced the Devils defense at times and Langhi will have to have a similar performance in order for the Colonels to make a game of it. Keyron Catlett is a speedster but OHS has faced a few speedsters already this year on OCath's Shamari Morton and BG's Jamele Carrothers. Offensively, OHS showed improvement against Daviess County last week. QB Zach Gross was an efficient 5-8 for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns. WR Jahlil Barret went to work last week shredding the DC defense for 110 yards receiving on only 2 receptions. OHS has weapons aplenty with WR's Kishawn Walker and Gekove Gardner, but it's been the running combo of TJ James and Landon Board that has made OHS even more dangerous. The Devils boast a huge offensive line and Landon Board runs as hard as any kid i've seen this season and through 5 games has rushed for 548 yards against a quality schedule. I look for Christian County coach Steve Lovelace to break out the ole cover 0 and cover 1 defenses he's used against OHS over the years on Friday. Lovelace will stack the line and box and dare OHS to beat them deep. In the past, OHS has struggled against teams that played them like that, but this season OHS' playcalling has improved significantly. OHS is built to beat that style with their multiple sets, huge offensive line, hard charging running backs, and quality wide receivers. I think this game is close for a quarter, possibly even a half. I think OHS' line and defense will wear the Colonels down and OHS wins going away. Owensboro 42 Christian County 21

Christian County 42 Hopkinsville 28
The good news is we'll find out in 2 week at Rash Stadium. Christian County has some big time athletes and they'll have OHS' full respect. Coach Lovelace will probably go cover 1 or cover zero and dare OHS to move the ball. Should be a fun one!

5A Apollo @ 2A Owensboro Catholic/Predictions
This is an interesting game that is getting lost in the shuffle of OHS-DC across town. However, this game is a good measuring stick for Owensboro Catholic and Apollo. The Eagles have showed tremendous improvement this year and AHS boasts on the best playmakers in the area in Rates Lewis. Catholic has bounced back very well since losing to Daviess County.Their effort against OHS will win them games against most anyone in 2A and have them in the ball game against anyone in 2A. I think Apollo will look to get Rates the ball, but the game will come down to 2 factors. 1, can Apollo establish the run, thus control the clock? 2, can Apollo keep OCath's high octane offense out the end zone? This game could be a tight contest or Catholic could run away with it. I'm going to say that Apollo shows some fight and represents well. Owensboro Catholic 42 Apollo 21

5A Owensboro @ 6A Daviess County/ Predictions
Everyone putting up close scores, I believe most are being politically correct. If this game plays out like it should, it will be somewhat of a blowout (4 scores +). I actually agree with you that if OHS plays to their potential that this game won't be close. However, OHS has turned the ball over multiple times every game this year so there is no reason to believe they won't continue to turn it over. That is what will probably keep DC in the game. When the turnovers come, hopefully OHS will have moved the ball and not give DC great field position. OHS turned the ball over twice inside BG's 30 last week, so those turnovers weren't as costly as they could've been. Part of my prediction my be slightly political, but I think DC is ultra prepared and fired up for this game. Everyone at DCHS believes they can win the game. It'll be up to OHS to come out and crush their beliefs from the get go. The longer DC hangs around Friday night, the more dangerous the game gets for OHS.

I agree. South Warren and BG really need to start playing. Knowing the competitor that Wallace is, I'm sure it'll happen.

Bowling Green/Warren Central Predictions
I know I predicted a lopsided score but I think this game has the potential to be closer if Warren Central plays well. I really like what Warren Central is doing offensively, I think the Dragon program is in good hands going forward. Dragon, does WC have much talent coming up through middle school, frosh, or JV ball? If they do...... watch out.

5A Owensboro @ 6A Daviess County/ Predictions
Purple88, I think OHS likes to mix up the zone and blitzes. I honestly hate when they drop 8 because there are too many holes in the zone to cover and a good QB will know exactly where the holes are. When OHS blitzes, they tend to get good pressure. OHS did get burned against Catholic a couple of times on the blitz, but the performace RZIII had against OHS was one of the best I've seen from a high school QB in quite some time. It's going to take that kind of effort to move the ball consistantly against OHS. The ideal situation for DC would be to sustain drives, because OHS plays a lot of kids both ways in the secondary and LBs. I did think OHS showed some fatigue in the Catholic game, and DC has the ability to exploit that if the Panthers can sustain some drives. I look for OHS to run the same defensive stuff at DC. They'll want to see what kind of rush they can get with their front 3 and they'll probably double high cover Stratton. When OHS rushes, they'll probably man up Stratton with KiShawn Walker who is in the 6-1 range. The whole game will come down to the DC defense. If the Panthers can keep OHS out of the endzone and capitalize on turnovers the huge crowd at Reid will be going nuts. Also, dont forget special teams. DC would probably be wise to not kick the ball to Jahlil Barrett. I think it's going to be a heck of a night at DC, and I'm sure they can't wait to count the gate $$ on Friday night! The bowling team is getting new uniforms for sure now, haaha.

5A Owensboro @ 6A Daviess County/ Predictions
There will be a MASSIVE crowd on Friday at Reid Stadium. Very rarely does Daviess County come into a game of this magnitude with a 4-0 record. There is a ton of optimism with the DC fans and rightfully so. The Panthers have more talent on both sides of the ball than they've had in years, highlighted by 6-5 senior receiver John Stratton (aka Strattatron). DC also boasts playmakers in QB Adam Bouchard, RB Chase LeCroy, and WR Jared McEwen. Defensively DC, has improved by leaps and bounds and a big part of that has been the services of Luke Baird and Jordan Lee. Also the addition of CB/Saftey Jonathan Powell off the baseball team has paid off with critical pass breakups and timely interceptions. There is no doubt DC fans, the coaches, and the players believe. OHS meanwhile is coming off a hard fought loss @BG on Friday. OHS was its' own worst enemy and spotted BG 7 points by throwing a pick 6. Turnovers have been a thorn in the Devils side every game this season. While most people see that happening for different reasons (ie QB play, coaching, etc), I see it as growing pains as the result of a new offense and a new QB. Keep in mind that QB Zach Gross is running a totally different offense than he's learned the past 2 years, and he's a first time starting QB. Also Gross banged his hand up pretty good in the Madisonville game causing swelling and reduced grip strength. I think Gross and OHS will be fine in the long run. Overall, this offense suits OHS better and the playcalling has been good as a whole this season. Defensively OHS is unreal this season. It going to take a very talented team with a great QB (ie Ray Zuberer OCath) to derail the "HellRaiser" defense. This game will come down to a couple of factors. 1-Can DC match up with OHS physically and athletically? 2-Will OHS continue to turn the ball over 3+ times every game. I do think DC can match up with OHS in spots, but overall the talent descripency is probably bigger than some people realize. While I do think OHS will have a few turnovers this week (they've had them every game) there will come a point where OHS stops turning the ball over and the offense will click. Is the the game it happens? Maybe, maybe not. DC needs to play mistake free football and ride the momentum of the huge DC crowd on Friday. Owensboro 28 Daviess County 24

Bowling Green/Warren Central Predictions
I think athletically, Warren Central can match up very well with BG. Up front will probably be the Dragons undoing. If Shanklin can have a great game for WC, I could see that being a problem for BG. In the end, I think BG wins this game, but it could be a good one for a bit. Bowling Green 42 Warren Central 14

Bowling Green 17 Owensboro 14
This wasn't a pretty game to watch, but anytime the Purps and Devils meet up its always intense. Neither team probably played their "A" game but both defenses flew to the ball. OHS had way too many turnovers and BG certainly missed some scoring chances. That said, I think OHS has the most room to grow. OHS has completely changed their offense from last year, and the growing pains are evident. QB Zach Gross had 4 turnovers tonight (3 int 1 fumble) but there were good things like throwing the 25 yard td to Jahlil Barret and good runs out of the zone read. I think once Gross settles in and the line gets more cohesive I look for OHS to make a huge jump. BG still has room for improvement as well and I'm sure the Purps will do it. I FULLY expect to see a rematch of this game in the playoffs. When that happens, will it be at Rash?

Nick Hart from Gibson Southerm has to be one of the best coaches around. Gibson Southern was terrible before he arrived.

PurpleHaze Western Kentucky Game of the Week: Owensboro (3-0) vs. Bowling Green (2-1
Right now, Owensboro is their own worst enemy. The Devils keep having untimely penalties and turnovers. I think Bowling Green wins this game, but the outcome could come down to the turnover battle. BG was plagued against St. X with some costly turnovers and the Tigers made them pay. OHS probably should've lost against OCath because of the turnovers, but the Aces just weren't talented enough to make OHS pay for their mistakes. I think both teams will play hard and with a lot of fire. BG will be looking to show they haven't lost their swag, and OHS is flat tired of losing to BG. In the end, I think the Purples win at home, but this is the first of 2 games these teams will play this year. Bowling Green 42, Owensboro 21

Owensboro 35 Owensboro Catholic 28
This was a fantastic game. Ray Zuberer played as well as I've ever seen him play. The kid took some big shot but kept dropping precision passes time after time. The offensive line for OCath held up much better than any one of us could've predicted. On defense, John Mark Boarman was a man possessed. Not only does he make seemingly every tackle, but he does it in textbook fashion. If OCath can play at this level, they'll have a shot vs Murray and Mayfield. Yes, OCath dropped a few passes but when you throw the ball 48 times in the game, that's gonna happen. All in all, there is no way any Aces fan could be disappointed. OHS used their team speed and overall talent to get the job done. As Apollofan98 said, Jahlil Barret was the jack of all trades. The kid is 5-6 at best but plays much bigger with his speed and heart. OHS has to find a way to quit getting silly penalties and be sharper in their execution. OHS qb Zach Gross completed most of his passes but missed the big play passes that could've blown this open. I do have full faith in Gross. Most folks don't know he banged his hand up pretty good against Madisonville and it's still healing. He's struggling to throw the deep ball right now because of but he'll be fine going forward. OHS has all the tools to make a run deep in the playoffs. Win or lose next week, they'll find out where they are against BG. I think when OHS puts it together, they are going to be special. It just may take till playoff time to see it.

Class 5A Football - What you need to know - (8/30)
Brown, the regular season game could very well determine that. ATLCat is correct on the region, but I'm not sure about the district on district matchup.

Class 5A Football - What you need to know - (8/30)
I don't think there is anyway to know if OHS is better than St. X because, well, they don't play. Of course after BG plays St. X this week and OHS the week after, we may have a solid idea. The thing about OHS right now is, the Red Devils are still trying to put together things on the offensive side of the ball. Playcalling for OHS has been terrific. The execution and penalties, not so much. Some of that is due to new kids in the lineup and a new quarterback. Most everyone feels like OHS will be fine in the big picture, win or lose to BG. I really feel like OHS and BG will play twice this season and honestly, only the second game matters. I do want OHS to go down to the EL and beat the Purps, but either way......it just doesn't matter. Even for BG, the regular season game won't matter in the big picture. I think the top 4 looks about right. Pulaski is the defending champs so they get some wiggle room. Highlands beat OHS at state last year so they get the benefit as well. Right now BG is #1 and I have zero problem with that.

5A #1 Bowling Green @ 6A #7 St. Xavier: Predictions
I think at the end of the day, the explosiveness of the Purples offense will be the difference. When you have two backs like Carrothers and Yates, it just provides a 1-2 punch that keeps on coming all game long. Deangelo Wilson is a speeds wideout that can cause problems in space as well. St. X seems to be moving in the right direction, but in a close game, I'll err on the side of big play capability. Bowling Green 21 St. X 17

5A #3 Owensboro vs. 2A #5 Owensboro Catholic Predictions
Brown, thanks for the kind words. We love to cover the local kids and Apollofan98 puts in countless hours with show prep. Brandon Ward is a beast on the social media scene. I just kinda "show up" and talk sports. The atmosphere Friday night is going to be electric. I think had OCath beat Daviess, the scene would've been unreal. OCath is going to go hard this week and refocus on the details that got them beat. OCath is so detail oriented because they have great coaches and frankly with their numbers, they need to be. Edge expects sharp execution and I'm sure he was pulling his hair out watching video of the game. Jay Fallin has quickly put his stamp on the OHS program. While he inherited a very talented senior class, he's opening the offense up to get some guys in space. We all know about Barrettt, James, and Walker but the biggest surprise so far has been the emergence of Landon Board at RB and Gross' ability to use his legs to gain yards. Once OHS works out the kinks they'll be on their way. Defensively, I can't wait to see how OHS responds to a high octane attack such as OCath's. Keep in mind, last year, OCath took the opening kickoff downfield very quickly for the game's first touchdown. The only problem was like 3 plays later, TJ James is running down the sideline to tie the game up. OCath has to stop or at least slow down the run. The bigger picture for OCath is using OHS to prepare for teams like Murray and Mayfield. Edge can use this game as a teaching tool and maybe to experiment a little if need be. Playoff time is what counts, and both OHS and OCath are working towards the goals of going deep in the playoffs. It just so happens that there are some mighty good teams on this side of the state in 2A and 5A. Here's to an injury free game and a fun night at Rash Stadium!

5A #3 Owensboro vs. 2A #5 Owensboro Catholic Predictions
I think conventional thinking says OHS wins this game. However, with any rivalry game, you can throw records and conventional thinking out the window. Not to take anything away from Daviess County, but OCath got caught looking ahead to this game last week. The Aces had tons of penalties and dropped passes that ultimately lead to their defeat. Owensboro meanwhile is riding their stingy defense to early season success while the offense is trying to get their footing. Junior Zach Gross is going a good job running quarterback and will only improve with each and every game. I can't be any more pleased with OHS' playcalling. Once OHS settles in and cuts down on the penalties, they'll be fine. This game will come down to a 2 major facets: 1-Can OCath stop the run, or slow it down enough to get OHS off the field? 2-Can OCath exploit OHS' secondary deep? If the answer to both of those questions is no, OHS wins by a lot. Win or lose, this game will give coach Edge and coach Fallin some more answers about what their respective teams need to work on. OHS better make sure they don't do what OCath did last week and look past the Aces. BG will be there next week. The Purps are always there lol. Owensboro 42, Owensboro Catholic 21

Thanks Ram! Also of note, this will be new OHS coach Jay Fallin's first home game as the head coach. Good luck to the Devils and stay injury free!

4A #2 South Warren at 5A Apollo
First off, I think it's great that Apollo got off to a good start last week in a 35-14 win over Muhlenberg. The game was 28-0 before Muhlenberg got on the board. While I don't think Apollo will win this game, they are taking a step forward and have some winnable games coming up. This Friday, Apollo needs to keep everything in front of them, and hang around. Hopefully WR Rates Lewis or RB Bryson Morris can find some space and get Apollo into the end zone. The big thing I'm going to look for this week from Apollo is competitiveness. South Warren has established a nice program and had a great week 1 versus John Hardin. If Apollo can keep this game respectable, It'll bode well for Apollo's confindence for the rest of the season. South Warren 42 Apollo 14

Owensboro/Madisonville-North Hopkins Predictions
Ram, it's Madisonville, not Hopkinsville. These two teams actually scrimmaged just two weeks ago with the result being 7-7. I wasn't there so I don't know if OHS was playing their starters or just not trying to show anything. With what happened to Madisonville last week at Evansville Harrison, this game shouldn't be close. I thought OHS looked solid against Warren Central, and while the Devils didn't execute at a high level, the playcalling was nice and players were flying to the ball. Owensboro 42 Madisonville 7
