This will be the toughest district game so far. West will play hard and give it their all, but it won't be near enough. Let's not get too carried away with the scores, might not have the rolling clock this week but it's not out of the question. These games are where the team needs to realize they are not just practicing this week to beat the Comets, they are practicing to get a little bit better...get better every week and be at your best when the playoffs roll around.

I don't recall any of the games between these two teams being close at half. In 2004, the score was 27-0 less than 3 minutes into the game. The field will be very wet and very muddy, but postponing the game isn't an option because this is homecoming and the dance is already set-up for tomorrow night.

My post was merely summarizing the overall perception of the public at large. Generally, the merger of schools is something that is planned for well ahead of time, not jumped into in a rush and pushed to become reality 3 months before the start of the school year, which appears to be the case with Mercerburg. Secondly, when the students are all housed in different buildings, county schools still have separate teams. Look around at Boone County, Fayette, Harlan, etc. These are all county wide school systems with multiple high schools each with separate sports teams. Even if this merger HAD to be done in such a rushed fashion, why not run it as other counties do and wait until the new facilities are ready before consolidating the two into one? While I would certainly hope and expect a merger such as this was not precipitated by some adults hunger for athletic achievement, one does have to wonder why the decision was made to combine teams when it doesn't appear to have been necessary...hmmmmmmmm

It certainly appears the administrators of the Mercer school system are trying to cherry pick a state championship...PERIOD. This statement has nothing to do with the kids, it in no way belittles their efforts and casts no aspersions on their abilities. However, it does take the adults to task for what looks to be, at least from the outside, a thinly veiled attempt to achieve a modicum of athletic success at the expense of ethics, class and sportsmanship. If this is not the case, the general thinking goes, then why not wait until the schools are actually in the same building before merging the athletic teams. MANY county school systems across the state operate more than one high school with separate teams without too much trouble. As has been stated previously, SOME Mercer fans sound as arrogant as the private school supporters and a few seem loathe to even admit there is a competitive advantage. Too many times we, as a society, get wrapped up in sports to such an extent that we have forgotten the entire basis of them, the whole reason for the exsistence of sport...to have fun. All too often the emphasis is placed on winning at all costs as opposed to the instillment of a good work ethic, understanding the importance of teamwork, the concepts of good sportsmanship and fair play and, most importantly, having fun. :thumb:

While the heat may not have directly caused his death, individuals with heart conditions (or any other such chronic ailment for that matter) are more susceptible to heat illness. I would say the heat and apparent disregard for KHSAA / KMA heat guidelines (which include unrestricted access to water) certainly contributed to this young man's demise. I imagine a court of law will see it as such as well...:thumb:

If they would eliminate the bye week, move the finals back a week and reduce the number of playoff qualifiers to the top two from each district they could move the start of football games back three weeks from what it is now. It then becomes even more conducive to restrict the start of practices to August 1 and thereby gets teams even further out of the Dog Days...:thumb:

It is not relevant. The KHSAA requires heat index readings to be taken on the actual field itself as readings can vary wildly from place to place. Here at Russell, we have three different fields used for practice, the game field, the baseball outfield and a practice field. I can tell you the readings are different on EACH FIELD AT THE SAME TIME because I am the one who takes them. Different drainage patterns affect the relative humidity as well as wind patterns. Varying amounts of shade along with wind will also affect the temperature. If the conditions are different on three different fields within a few hundred yards of each other, you can be sure they will be different about 30 miles apart.

All I can say is WOW...John Edwards and his band of attorneys will be sure to ride into town any minute now. Sounds as though the Henderson County school system is woefully lacking in following KHSAA / KMA heat guidelines and I'm sure they will be taken to task for such.

Allegedly, but in my years of experience, I haven't seen ANY injuries where a wet field was the causitive factor.

Except for all the college games...Miami-Florida St, USC-Arkansas, WVU-Marshall, etc.

Maybe because the game has been looked forward to for the past week and most people do not see a real need to wait another day to play. I haven't seen any other games being postponed for it, why this one??? Also, keep in mind that with the holiday weekend, it may throw a serious wrench into the plans of some families and keep some from attending at all.

Ummm...if you have out of town plans or a family reunion, it's not like you can just change your plans. I don't, I'm just saying there may be very many who do.

I'm not sure where Kasey will wind up, but he has been invited to visit at least 3 D-1 schools that I know of...one in the SEC, one in the Big East and one in the Big 10. Is that big enough?
