KHSAA vote today on moving finals back a week in '07 & '08

Featured Replies

Everybody seems to agree that the high school football season starts too early in Kentucky.

The first games this year were played on Aug. 18, in the middle of the hot and humid dog days of summer.

That early kickoff might be about to change, however.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association's football advisory committee yesterday recommended holding the state finals a week later in 2007 and '08, which would mean the regular season would start a week later.

The KHSAA's Board of Control will vote on the recommendation today.

This year's state finals are Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.

If the proposed changes are made, the 2007 season would start on Aug. 24, and the finals would be Dec. 7-8. The 2008 season would start on Aug. 29, and the finals would be Dec. 12-13.

This could help with some teams trying to get bigger out of state teams sceduled. Many other states start one or two weeks later than KY, and coaches who through the new classifications have more games to fill, cannot always get big time programs from out of state in week one or two. This may help that.

That's great!!!!!!! I can hear my wife now, we have a Christmas party tonight so you have to be home by 4:30. But it is also not a bad thing to worry about. Because if i'm rushing to get home, that means the Birds are playing in the finals.:thumb:

I like it for two reasons, first, there will no longer be a conflict with UofL every other year and second we do start early. However, what I don't like is the article suggests the finals will be held in two days in 2007 and 2008 which would mean there will be three games each day which is way too much football. I hope the KHSAA is still considering the 2, 2, and 2 format for 2007 and beyond.

I don't like it. The weather may likely be more of an issue, and I think the game should be decided by the teams, and not conditions.

I would rather go to/play in a game with the temps in the 40's then in the 90's.

By moving the games back a week, the weather in the 2nd week of December isn't much different then the 1st week. The later in August you start, the cooler the temps.

Summer practice could also start a week later, not that it will help a whole lot.

I like the dates as they are now.

Interesting. I didn't catch that but you are absolutely right, they need to look long and hard at using a 3 day finals format. Two days is just not a good situation for those who go to watch (or work) all 6 games.

I think they were right in moving it back a week, but I think it would be better to remove the bye week and leave finals where they're at.

I could agree on that HHSDad, but that puts the finals back in a conflict with UL home game every other year, which I assume is a big thing they are trying to avoid.

I think they should start later, and limit the number of teams who make the playoffs to the top 2 in each district, now that they're going to a watered down six class system...

I meant that they should move the start date back a week AND get rid of the bye week. Then finals wouldn't change.

Which would still leave them in a conflict with UL on the first weekend of Dec. :D

With 6 divisions and 87% making playoffs just start late and cut the reg season to 9 like Indiana.

I think it is a step in the right direction, especially for small schools like Mayfield who has to have kids play both way in the hot summer heat. A week later start could do good things for the smaller schools.
