1997 Bowling Green Opened the season against Hopkinsville, who had a guy named Artose Pinner at RB. Pinner would go on to play in the NFL. He was also too old to be playing HS football. BG was tied 14-14 with Hoptown when Pinner went down with an injury. BG would win the opener 40-14 with Pinner out of the game. Fast forward to the Regional Final and 12-0 BG falls to a Pinner driven Hoptown team. That same Hoptown team would lose a close State game with Cov. Cath. Remove Pinner and you have BG v. Cov. Cath in the Finals. That was a really good BG team that got snubbed by an illegal player from a chance at winning it all.

It is worth going to Russellville's Rhea Stadium in Autumn. Rhea was a WPA project along with several others around the state and is simply stunning with the trees changing colors and the neighborhood behind the stadium

So South dropped out of one of the best paying bowl games in KY... in their backyard... against a top tier team... to go play at Campbellsville? Can someone explain that logic to me?

You gotta wonder... what game is a bigger stage that would lead to South Warren dropping out? Excited to hear who is the big-time Week 1 opponent for South that is taking the place of kicking off the season at WKU in a bowl where they have both played well and drawn big crowds.

Interesting fact… BG has been on both sides of this coin… Douglas’s defense is absolutely stacked… …just like the 2005 BG defense was. In 2005, through 14 games, including playing St. X and a loaded Hopkinsville team, the Purples had given up 54 points. Lex Cath scored 49 in the Final to the shock of everyone (due largely in part to turnovers). …then in 2011, BG faced the unstoppable force of the John Hardin offense that had scored 588 points through 13 games… BG was up like 35-0 at the end of the first quarter. Long post short… anything is possible regardless of seemingly insurmountable advantages on paper.

Looks like another week of BG, who has won six state titles in the last 11 years listening to how they are likely in over their head against an opponent you has yet to finish the run.

In all seriousness… Scott Co. did have the Trinity roadblock… Douglas is loaded this year and will be hard to beat… and Southwest is a tough out in the middle of a historic season… it’s Thanksgiving… thank goodness for ALL high school football!

No, BG’s 7-7 record against the Big 3 came during the regular season as opposed to Scott Co’s 1-4 record against them in the playoffs.

BG played St. X every one of those years, played Trinity in 2019 and 2020, and scrimmaged Male quite a few times… Actually, from 2011 to present, Scott Co. played the “Big 3” FIVE times… during that same span, BG played them FOURTEEN times.

Southwest is clearly a talented team, Scott Co. was an excellent team with quite the impressive resume, and Douglas is without a doubt the most physically talented team in the state… that said for the message board fans of those three schools, who since 2011 have combined to win one state title, to scoff at Bowling Green, a team that has won six state titles in that same time span, seems a little presumptuous. BG does not have the D1 stockpile Douglas has, does not have the unblemished record that Southwest has, nor do they have the strength of schedule Scott had… we will see if those intangibles win out against the Purples. I for one, like the Purples chances.

I’m confused by the number of people on this thread named “Bud”. Seems like a lot for so few participants. It’s hard to argue how impressive Scott Co.’s wins against their schedule were… which makes their 2nd half meltdown against Southwest that much more confusing.

Ok, you sent me down the rabbit hole since I was pretty sure that I was right about this one... and before I go further, I now only kinda think I'm right... Here is the KHSAA Bylaw you referenced... I have highlighted what I believe is the critical point... (5) When a participant is ejected from a scrimmage or contest, the participant is to leave the vicinity of the playing area and remove himself/herself completely from the area of the playing facility unless the specific playing rules of the sport call for a different penalty option or the student would be placed in a position of not being supervised. In those cases, the administration of the player’s team is responsible for ensuring that the student participates in no other unsportsmanlike activity or the school itself may face additional penalty under Bylaw 27; KHSAA uses the NFHS Football Handbook for rules, which I have linked HERE. Here is the best I can find which leads me to believe that I may ne right about this as that it just specifies adults in the wording: A disqualified member of the coaching staff shall be removed from the stadium area and be prohibited from any further contact, with his team, direct or indirect, during the remainder of the game. For failure to comply, the referee may forfeit the game.

Not in HS in KY. Additionally, those on here blaming coaches and team culture for a rogue action is just silly. 15-18 year old kids make some really poor decisions at times… no matter how they have been raised, coached, or instructed. See a few of the Corbin players in the Finals against Louisville Central just a few years ago. It would be different if the whole East team ran on to the field, but that was not at all the case here.

I would actually argue just the opposite. When is the last time a predominantly one dimensional team even made it to the 5A Finals?

This isn’t the Central of past years. The blanking they took from South stands out.

Hard to see Central winning this one at Logan. If at Central, I would give them better odds. Logan is rolling right now.
