I am hearing the name of a former coach that is still in the system. His son is younger and plays for Bracken. (Bracken faithful will not have too much problem figuring that one out.)

Mark Starns is taking Fleming County for the second straight year in the 16th region. He also took Johnson Central in 2006 in the 15th region. Tom Creamer took Maysville in the 10th in 1972 and 1973. Later took Shelby County in 1976, 77, 78, 81 and 82. Way back on this one. Earle D. Jones took Kavanaugh in the 5th in 1930 and 1931. Later took Maysville in 1937, 38, 41, 45, 46, 47, 48 and 50.

Amen to that. Punk was a good friend of mine. People used to call him from local drinking establishments to settle bets about local sports.

1980 was the last team.

Not much of a football school but we did have some basketball success. I was on this last team from Maysville.

Bracken County looked VERY sharp last night. I can never remember Emma being as sharp as she was last night. (And I have seen her pitch summer ball since she was 10) She was hitting her spots and kept a lot of movement on the ball. Really kept Mason County off balance. Hate it that this is not a seeded district but it is what it is. Good luck next week Lady Bears. Hope you make some noise.

I would not consider it an upset. I may be biased because my daughter plays for Mason County but still feel like these two teams are VERY close to evenly matched. For some reason Mason County is not a cold weather team. They ALWAYS play poorly at the first of the season but as it gets warmer they start to play better. Really weird but that is their tendency.

My point was that the Mason-Fleming rivalry will always be heated no matter who is coaching either team.

I really don't think Starna to Fleming makes the rivalry heat up any. Were Buddy Biggs and Mark Starns on staff at Mason at the same time?

Once again you are correct jahearme. Mark Starns has been introduced as the new head basketball coach at Fleming County.

I think the thing that did Mason in last night was twice in the first two innings Nicholas made good plays on hard hit line shots with runners on base. Both good plays resulted in double plays. Not bad base running but just really good defense. Those two plays kind of took the wind out of the Lady Royals sails early and they were not able to recover until the 7th.

Really wanted to see a 39th district team in the finals or an all 39th finals but neither one of us could get it done. It was new territory for Mason but old hat for Bracken to be playing that far into the region. Congrats to the Lady Bears on another fine season.

Mason trailed 5-0 bgoing into 7th. Not enough rally left in the tank. Good season and good luck to everyone still playing.

This was not something I expected either and I have a daughter on the team. They started the season really slow and have gotten better each outing.

Thanks for the kind words Bluespecter. Mason has hit like that at times this year but not off a quality pitcher like Emma. I was nervous until the last out because I knew the Lady Bears would not just roll over. Some reward for winning your district. Bracken in the first round. Good luck the rest of the way.

You are correct sir. He was an assistant to Russ Day in 1984 at Bourbon County.

Amen to that. He has done a GREAT job with Bracken's pitchers.

My daughter is on the Lady Royals team and I was shocked also. Mason is playing a lot better than they were in the early part of the season. Bourbon just simply thumped Mason at Harrison's tourney. Twice. Next week Mason plays Bourbon again and falls 8-3. Kind of makes me scratch my head. Thanks for the kind words.

Great coach, even better person. Last coach to take my beloved Maysville Bulldogs to the Sweet 16. I have so much respect for him. He will truly be missed by everyone.

Oh I agree 100%. Starns did the right thing and not everyone was happy about kids being dismissed.
